Comparison of intratesticular lidocaine, sacrococcygeal epidural lidocaine and intravenous methadone in cats undergoing castration: a prospective, randomized, investigator-blind clinical trial
You never surf alone. Ubiquitous tracking of users' browsing habits
In the early age of the internet users enjoyed a large level of anonymity. At
the time web pages were just hypertext documents; almost no personalisation of
the user experience was o ered. The Web today has evolved as a world wide
distributed system following specific architectural paradigms. On the web now,
an enormous quantity of user generated data is shared and consumed by a network
of applications and services, reasoning upon users expressed preferences and
their social and physical connections. Advertising networks follow users'
browsing habits while they surf the web, continuously collecting their traces
and surfing patterns. We analyse how users tracking happens on the web by
measuring their online footprint and estimating how quickly advertising
networks are able to pro le users by their browsing habits
Quantifying the Inefficiency of the US Social Security System
We quantify the inefficiency of the retirement component of the US social security system within a model where agents receive idiosyncratic labor-productivity shocks that are privately observedsocial security, efficient allocations, idiosyncratic shocks
AIROscope stellar acquisition
The acquisition system which operates in conjunction with a balloon-borne TV system, boresighted to a telescope is described. It has two main functions, a star field monitor and an offset star tracker. The design of the system was strongly influenced by the TV camera, which uses the same interlaced scanning system as is employed in commercial television broadcasting. To reduce power and bandwidth requirements, the star field information transmitted in our system consists only of the horizontal and vertical coordinates of each star and its brightness. As a star field monitor the system provides video thresholding, camera blemish suppression, coordinate digitization in 3 axes, circuity to recognize as single star the dispersed video signals resulting from one star overlapping adjacent scanning lines and storage of all signals for readout by the telemetry at appropriate times
Electronic scanning pressure measuring system and transducer package
An electronic scanning pressure system that includes a plurality of pressure transducers is examined. A means obtains an electrical signal indicative of a pressure measurement from each of the plurality of pressure transducers. A multiplexing means is connected for selectivity supplying inputs from the plurality of pressure transducers to the signal obtaining means. A data bus connects the plurality of pressure transducers to the multiplexing means. A latch circuit is connected to supply control inputs to the multiplexing means. An address bus is connected to supply an address signal of a selected one of the plurality of pressure transducers to the latch circuit. In operation, each of the pressure transducers is successively scanned by the multiplexing means in response to address signals supplied on the address bus to the latch circuit
EEG in the classroom: Synchronised neural recordings during video presentation
We performed simultaneous recordings of electroencephalography (EEG) from
multiple students in a classroom, and measured the inter-subject correlation
(ISC) of activity evoked by a common video stimulus. The neural reliability, as
quantified by ISC, has been linked to engagement and attentional modulation in
earlier studies that used high-grade equipment in laboratory settings. Here we
reproduce many of the results from these studies using portable low-cost
equipment, focusing on the robustness of using ISC for subjects experiencing
naturalistic stimuli. The present data shows that stimulus-evoked neural
responses, known to be modulated by attention, can be tracked in for groups of
students with synchronized EEG acquisition. This is a step towards real-time
inference of engagement in the classroom.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables. Preprint version. Revision of original

Non-hermitian approach to decaying ultracold bosonic systems
A paradigm model of modern atom optics is studied, strongly interacting
ultracold bosons in an optical lattice. This many-body system can be
artificially opened in a controlled manner by modern experimental techniques.
We present results based on a non-hermitian effective Hamiltonian whose quantum
spectrum is analyzed. The direct access to the spectrum of the metastable
many-body system allows us to easily identify relatively stable quantum states,
corresponding to previously predicted solitonic many-body structures
