Entanglement scaling at first order phase transitions
First order quantum phase transitions (1QPTs) are signaled, in the
thermodynamic limit, by discontinuous changes in the ground state properties.
These discontinuities affect expectation values of observables, including
spatial correlations. When a 1QPT is crossed in the vicinity of a second order
one (2QPT), due to the correlation length divergence of the latter, the
corresponding ground state is modified and it becomes increasingly difficult to
determine the order of the transition when the size of the system is finite.
Here we show that, in such situations, it is possible to apply finite size
scaling to entanglement measures, as it has recently been done for the order
parameters and the energy gap, in order to recover the correct thermodynamic
limit. Such a finite size scaling can unambigously discriminate between first
and second order phase transitions in the vicinity of multricritical points
even when the singularities displayed by entanglement measures lead to
controversial results
Excitation of the W triplet Delta (U), W singlet Delta (U), B prime triplet Sigma (U) (minus), and A prime singlet Epsison (U) (minus) states of N2 by electron impact
Electron energy-loss spectra have been obtained for N2 at 20.6 eV impact energy, and scattering angles of 10-138 deg. The differential cross section for excitation of the W triplet Delta(U) state is the largest triplet-state cross section at all scattering angles, and is the largest inelastic cross section at angles greater than 70 degrees. Estimation of genetic parameters for height using spatial analysis in Tsuga heterophylla full-sibling family trials in British Columbia
Non-spatial and spatial analyses were carried out to study the effects on genetic parameters in ten-year height growth data across two series of 10 large second-generation full-sib progeny trials of western hemlock [Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.) Sarg.] in British Columbia. To account for different and complex patterns of environmental heterogeneity, spatial single trial analyses were conducted using an individual-tree mixed model with a two-dimensional smoothing surface with tensor product of B-spline bases. The spatial single trial analysis, in all cases, showed sizeable lower Deviance Information Criterion values relative to the non-spatial analysis. Also, fitting a surface displayed a consistent reduction in the posterior mean as well as a decrease in the standard deviations of error variance, no appreciable changes in the additive variance, an increase of individual narrow-sense heritability, and accuracy of breeding values. The tensor product of cubic basis functions of B-spline based on a mixed model framework does provide a useful new alternative to model different and complex patterns of spatial variability within sites in forest genetic trials. Individual narrow-sense heritabilities estimates from the spatial single trial analyses were low (average of 0.06), but typical of this species. Estimated dominance relative to additive variances were unstable across sites (from 0.00 to 1.59). The implications of these estimations will be discussed with respect to the western hemlock genetic improvement program in British Columbia.Fil: Cappa, Eduardo Pablo. User guide for the British Geological Survey Blockfields dataset
This report presents a description of the Blockfields dataset developed by the British Geological
Survey (BGS). The dataset provides screening-level data that gives an indication of the geological
suitability of the subsurface for the presence of blockfields. The dataset is designed to be used by
those involved in the strategic assessment of the subsurface for the management or development
of sites in Great Britain. It may be particularly valuable for spatial planners and local authorities
who wish to undertake a strategic assessment.
The dataset is derived from a combination of BGS national datasets and the DTM of Great Britain
at 5m resolution © Bluesky International Limited elevation data to show the environmental
suitability for blockfield presence in Great Britain. The approach was developed by geologists
using basic landscape characteristics from a large sample of observed blockfields, and
implemented by specialists in geologically derived products at BGS. The purpose of this user guide
is to enable those licensing this dataset to have a better appreciation of how this dataset has been
created and therefore gain a better understanding of its potential applications and limitations
A Composite Genome Approach to Identify Phylogenetically Informative Data from Next-Generation Sequencing
We have developed a novel method to rapidly obtain homologous genomic data
for phylogenetics directly from next-generation sequencing reads without the
use of a reference genome. This software, called SISRS, avoids the time
consuming steps of de novo whole genome assembly, genome-genome alignment, and
annotation. For simulations SISRS is able to identify large numbers of loci
containing variable sites with phylogenetic signal. For genomic data from apes,
SISRS identified thousands of variable sites, from which we produced an
accurate phylogeny. Finally, we used SISRS to identify phylogenetic markers
that we used to estimate the phylogeny of placental mammals. We recovered
phylogenies from multiple datasets that were consistent with previous
conflicting estimates of the relationships among mammals. SISRS is open source

Three-frequency resonances in dynamical systems
We investigate numerically and experimentally dynamical systems having three
interacting frequencies: a discrete mapping (a circle map), an exactly solvable
model (a system of coupled ordinary differential equations), and an
experimental device (an electronic oscillator). We compare the hierarchies of
three-frequency resonances we find in each of these systems. All three show
similar qualitative behaviour, suggesting the existence of generic features in

User guide for the GeoScour GB V1 dataset
This report describes the BGS GeoScour data product. The methods used to create the component datasets have been critically assessed and its fitness for purpose determined by specialists in BGS.
GeoScour looks specifically and only at the geological factors that influence scour and does not consider any hydraulic or hydrodynamic factors.
This document outlines the background to why the dataset was created, its potential uses and gives a brief description of the data layers. Technical information regarding the GIS and how the data was created is described and advice is provided on using the dataset
Research into anxiety of childhood: playing catch-up (to Olympic standard)
This special issue is the culmination of an ESRC seminar series grant awarded to the authors of this editorial. We named the seminar series CATTS (Child Anxiety, Theory and Treatment Seminars) and it took the form of six highly stimulating, one-day seminars on the subject of child anxiety, with participants from clinical and academic backgrounds and from Great Britain, Europe, the USA and Australia. Most of the authors in this publication, and a sister special issue in Cognitions and Emotion (2008), participated in the CATTS series
