    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: The gynaecologist is called upon daily to diagnose pelvic pathologies. Ultrasound is a useful, safe and widely used method of investigation of such problems.OBJECTIVE: To determine the indications and findings of pelvic ultrasound in Owerri, South Eastern Nigeria.METHOD: Two hundred and fifty consecutive women referred for pelvic ultrasound in Owerri South Eastern Nigeria were examined by abdominal and transvaginal ultrasound.RESULTS: Most 148(59.2%) of the patients were nulliparous and majority 108(43.2%) were in the 30-39year age group. Doctors referred most 164(64%) of the patients, while 74(29.6%) were self referred. The most common indication was ‘to check the womb’ in 89(35.6%) of cases followed by threatened abortion in 30(12%) of patients. The most common post ultrasound diagnosis was ‘normal uterus’ in 111(44.4%) while fibromyoma was second with 41(16.4%) of patients. On the whole abnormalities were picked up in 36.4% of patients.CONCLUSION: We conclude that pelvic ultrasound even when not originating from the doctor should be encouraged because of the significant number of abnormalities detected. These could then be treated with greater success while they are still small

Background: Workplace safety relies partially on workers' ability to recognize hazards that could result in personal injury. This study aimed to determine the perception of industrial workers to the environmental risks that they are exposed to and their practice of self protection through the use of PPE.Methods: It was a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted among 128 workers of a cereal, oil and animal feeds manufacturing industry located in Jos South LGA of Plateau State. Data was obtained through a structured interviewer administered questionnaire and analyzed with Epi-Info 3.5.4.Results: Mean age of respondents was 31.3 ± 7.4 years and it was a predominantly male population (91.4%). There were multiple sources of information on risks. Most (99.2%) respondents obtained information from the media. Environmental factors perceived as 'high risk' were noise pollution (49.2%), air pollution from dust (46.1%), exposure to chemicals (45.3%) and accidents with machinery (45.3%). The mean self-perception score was 18.0 ± 3.4 and 78.1% of respondents had good perception of risk. There was inconsistent use of PPE by 83% of factory and laboratory workers. Conclusion: Good perception of risk was found among the workers but with poor consistent use of PPE. Results of the study may be used to design policies and programmes to help workers identify environmental health risks, and improve their attitude toward self protection. Keywords: risk perception, industrial workers, personal protective equipmen

An agency cannot be separated from the role of human resources (HR) working in it. The quality of human resources is one factor to improve the productivity of an institution's performance. Therefore, an assessment in employee selection is an important part of providing qualified employees for the company. Problems that occur in CV Techindo Global Solutions is the process of receiving employees who are still using the manual way and based on subjective assessment results so that the process of acceptance of employees to be slow and inaccurate. The absence of an application program in support of decision making for employee recruitment. Based on this, the author designed the decision support system of employee appraisal on CV. Techindo Global Solutions using AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) and TOPSIS (Technique For Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) methods. Employee acceptance system is done by using Analytic Hierarchy Process method to determine the weight of each criterion and the use of Technique For Order Performance by Similarity to Ideal Solution to conduct ranking alternatives in the form of employee data. This system is built with PHP and MySQL programming language as database. With the program using AHP and TOPSIS method, the new employee's assessment is better than the individual assessment and with the decision support information system, the process of receiving the employee can be helped from the evaluation side

Objective: Worldwide, research into experiences of care givers are gradually increasing and their central role in community care is being acknowledged. Caregivers experience a multidimensional range of problems, often associated with their caregiving role. It becomes important to identify these areas of burden and provide necessary support. The study sought to determine the prevalence of psychological distress and experience of burden of care among the caregivers of mentally ill patients. Method: A cross sectional descriptive study. Eligible consecutive subjects were recruited to the study over a 6 month period. Fifty three caregiver relatives of patients diagnosed with a psychiatric illness were assessed using the General Health questionnaire version 12, an Adapted Burden of Care (BOC) Schedule and a Sociodemographic questionnaire. Results: The caregivers were 51% male and 49% female. Most were above 35years in age (66.1%). They were either parents (38.8%), siblings (18.4%), uncle/aunt (14.3%), first cousin (12.2%) or other extended relatives (16.3%). Almost half of the relatives had psychological distress (43.8%) and most of which (63%) had more burden. The mean score on the BOC among the caregivers was 41 (±18.68SD), with scores ranging from 0.00-89.00, and 45.3% of relatives experiencing more than average burden of care. Conclusion: There is a significant level of burden and psychological distress experienced by caregivers in this study location. It is recommended that effectively planned interventions are targeted at  alleviating this burden and at improving the ability of caregivers to cope, within the Nigerian mental health service delivery system.Key Words: Caregiver; Burden; Patients; Psychiatry; Nigeri

Mapping patterns of abiotic and biotic stress resilience uncovers conservation gaps and breeding potential of Vigna wild relatives

This study provides insights in patterns of distribution of abiotic and biotic stress resilience across Vigna gene pools to enhance the use and conservation of these genetic resources for legume breeding. Vigna is a pantropical genus with more than 88 taxa including important crops such as V. radiata (mung bean) and V. unguiculata (cowpea). our results show that sources of pest and disease resistance occur in at least 75 percent of the Vigna taxa, which were part of screening assessments, while sources of abiotic stress resilience occur in less than 30 percent of screened taxa. This difference in levels of resilience suggests that Vigna taxa co-evolve with pests and diseases while taxa are more conservative to adapt to climatic changes and salinization. twenty-two Vigna taxa are poorly conserved in genebanks or not at all. this germplasm is not available for legume breeding and requires urgent germplasm collecting before these taxa extirpate on farm and in the wild. Vigna taxa, which tolerate heat and drought stress are rare compared with taxa, which escape these stresses because of short growing seasons or with taxa, which tolerate salinity. We recommend prioritizing these rare Vigna taxa for conservation and screening for combined abiotic and biotic stress resilience resulting from stacked or multifunctional traits. the high presence of salinity tolerance compared with drought stress tolerance, suggests that Vigna taxa are good at developing salt-tolerant traits. Vigna taxa are therefore of high value for legume production in areas that will suffer from salinization under global climate change.publishedVersio

Hamiltonian analysis of Poincar\'e gauge theory scalar modes

The Hamiltonian constraint formalism is used to obtain the first explicit complete analysis of non-trivial viable dynamic modes for the Poincar\'e gauge theory of gravity. Two modes with propagating spin-zero torsion are analyzed. The explicit form of the Hamiltonian is presented. All constraints are obtained and classified. The Lagrange multipliers are derived. It is shown that a massive spin-0−0^- mode has normal dynamical propagation but the associated massless 0−0^- is pure gauge. The spin-0+0^+ mode investigated here is also viable in general. Both modes exhibit a simple type of ``constraint bifurcation'' for certain special field/parameter values.Comment: 28 pages, LaTex, submitted to International Journal of Modern Physics

Hyperbolic slicings of spacetime: singularity avoidance and gauge shocks

    Get PDF
I study the Bona-Masso family of hyperbolic slicing conditions, considering in particular its properties when approaching two different types of singularities: focusing singularities and gauge shocks. For focusing singularities, I extend the original analysis of Bona et. al and show that both marginal and strong singularity avoidance can be obtained for certain types of behavior of the slicing condition as the lapse approaches zero. For the case of gauge shocks, I re-derive a condition found previously that eliminates them. Unfortunately, such a condition limits considerably the type of slicings allowed. However, useful slicing conditions can still be found if one asks for this condition to be satisfied only approximately. Such less restrictive conditions include a particular member of the 1+log family, which in the past has been found empirically to be extremely robust for both Brill wave and black hole simulations.Comment: 11 pages, revtex4.
