Localized corrosion of high performance metal alloys in an acid/salt environment
Various vacuum jacketed cryogenic supply lines at the Space Shuttle launch site at Kennedy Space Center use convoluted flexible expansion joints. The atmosphere at the launch site has a very high salt content, and during a launch, fuel combustion products include hydrochloric acid. This extremely corrosive environment has caused pitting corrosion failure in the thin walled 304L stainless steel flex hoses. A search was done to find a more corrosion resistant replacement material. The study focussed on 19 metal alloys. Tests which were performed include electrochemical corrosion testing, accelerated corrosion testing in a salt fog chamber, and long term exposure at a beach corrosion testing site. Based on the results of these tests, several nickel based alloys were found to have very high resistance to this corrosive environment. Also, there was excellent agreement between the electrochemical tests and the actual beach exposure tests. This suggests that electrochemical testing may be useful for narrowing the field of potential candidate alloys before subjecting samples to long term beach exposure
BIM Bamboo: a digital design framework for bamboo culms
For decades bamboo has been identified as one of the most promising alternatives to help reduce the rising demand for industrialised building materials in the global south but numerous technical, normative and cultural challenges have so far prevented its widespread use in construction. In response, significant resources are currently being invested in the development of standardised, highly processed structural bamboo components following the unsustainable model of mass industrialisation prevalent in the global north. As a counterpoint, this research re-examines the structural use of natural bamboo culms against the backdrop of the digital age and postulates a new design and fabrication framework to support the construction of high-quality, sustainable and resilient bamboo structures suitable for the twenty-first century. This framework is based on the principles of building information modelling and is focused on managing, as opposed to forcibly eliminating, the inherent variability of a natural structural element through modern three-dimensional scanning, digital modelling and robotic fabrication. This paper presents the conceptual details of this framework with a particular focus on Mexico, one of the largest emergent economies in the world, as a potential implementation platform

The most recent burst of Star Formation in the Massive Elliptical Galaxy NGC 1052
High-spatial resolution near-infrared (NIR) images of the central 24 x 24
arcsec^2 (~ 2 x 2 kpc^2) of the elliptical galaxy NGC 1052 reveal a total of 25
compact sources randomly distributed in the region. Fifteen of them exhibit
Halpha luminosities an order of magnitude above the estimate for an evolved
population of extreme horizontal branch stars. Their Halpha equivalent widths
and optical-to-NIR spectral energy distributions are consistent with them being
young stellar clusters aged < 7 Myr. We consider this to be the first direct
observation of spatially resolved star-forming regions in the central
kiloparsecs of an elliptical galaxy. The sizes of these regions are ~< 11 pc
and their median reddening is E(B - V) ~ 1 mag. According to previous works,
NGC 1052 may have experienced a merger event about 1 Gyr ago. On the assumption
that these clusters are spreaded with similar density over the whole galaxy,
the fraction of galaxy mass (5 x 10^{-5}) and rate of star formation (0.01
Msun/yr) involved, suggest the merger event as the possible cause for the star
formation we see today.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS Letter
Kinect-based occupational therapy virtual environment for functional neurorehabilitation of the upper limb
The use of virtual reality technologies has attracted great interest in the area of functional neurorehabilitation [1]. These technologies have a strong ludic component that can increase motivation. Furthermore, Kinect-based motion tracking enables us to individualize the exercises and to generate knowledge [2]. The aim of this research is to perform a proof of concept test of a virtual environment for upper limb rehabilitation. To this end, we have designed two rehabilitation virtual scenarios based on occupational therapy activities. Activities are monitored by a control system based on Microsoft® Kinect sensor [3], for performing bilateral hand coordination and finger dissociation rehabilitation exercises. Both virtual scenarios have been validated by expert therapists at the Institut Guttmann of Nerurrehabilitación and a preliminary evaluation has been performed with four traumatic brain injury patients
The SED of Low-Luminosity AGNs at high-spatial resolution
The inner structure of AGNs is expected to change below a certain luminosity
limit. The big blue bump, footprint of the accretion disk, is absent for the
majority of low-luminosity AGNs (LLAGNs). Moreover, recent simulations suggest
that the torus, a keystone in the Unified Model, vanishes for nuclei with L_bol
< 10^42 erg/s. However, the study of LLAGN is a complex task due to the
contribution of the host galaxy, which light swamps these faint nuclei. This is
specially critical in the IR range, at the maximum of the torus emission, due
to the contribution of the old stellar population and/or dust in the nuclear
region. Adaptive optics imaging in the NIR (VLT/NaCo) together with diffraction
limited imaging in the mid-IR (VLT/VISIR) permit us to isolate the nuclear
emission for some of the nearest LLAGNs in the Southern Hemisphere. These data
were extended to the optical/UV range (HST), radio (VLA, VLBI) and X-rays
(Chandra, XMM-Newton, Integral), in order to build a genuine spectral energy
distribution (SED) for each AGN with a consistent spatial resolution (< 0.5")
across the whole spectral range. From the individual SEDs, we construct an
average SED for LLAGNs sampled in all the wavebands mentioned before. Compared
with previous multiwavelength studies of LLAGNs, this work covers the mid-IR
and NIR ranges with high-spatial resolution data. The LLAGNs in the sample
present a large diversity in terms of SED shapes. Some of them are very well
described by a self-absorbed synchrotron (e.g. NGC 1052), while some other
present a thermal-like bump at ~1 micron (NGC 4594). All of them are
significantly different when compared with bright Seyferts and quasars,
suggesting that the inner structure of AGNs (i.e. the torus and the accretion
disk) suffers intrinsic changes at low luminosities.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures. To appear in the proceedings of "Astrophysics at

Epidemiologia del parasitismo intestinal infantil en el valle del Guadalquivir, España
BACKGROUND : Intestinal parasitisms represents a public health problem that should be periodically assessed in each region. In the present paper, a study about prevalence of intestinal parasites, has been carried out in children from the natural region of the Guadalquivir Valley. METHODS: During the period 1994-1996, 1.917 children without symptoms, aging between 6 and 10, were studied by means of coprologycal analysis and Graham method, all of them living in 20 villages in the Guadalquivir valley. RESULTS: The overall prevalence of intestinal parasitisms have been of 27,12%. The reported parasites and their prevalence are as follows: Enterobius vermicularis (20,44%), Giardia lamblia (5,05%), Entamoeba coli (2,45%), Endolimax nana (1,61%), Entamoeba histolytica (0,31%), Entamoeba hartmanni (0,05%), Iodamoeba bütschlii (0,05%). CONCLUSIONS: The overall prevalence of intestinal parasites is similar to that found in other spanish region, if only a little bit more favourable probably due to the long lasting drought and the improvements in health resourses, no geohelmints have been detected unlike other protozoosis, giardiasis mantains a relatively high prevalence.FUNDAMENTO: Las parasitosis intestinales en los niños constituyen un problema de salud pública que debe ser valorado periódicamente en cada región.
