    Comparison of K-doped and pure cold-rolled tungsten sheets: As-rolled condition and recrystallization behaviour after isochronal annealing at different temperatures

    Severely deformed cold-rolled tungsten is a promising structural material for future fusion reactor applications due to high melting temperature and excellent mechanical properties. However, the fine-grained microstructure after deformation is not stable at temperatures above 800 °C, leading to brittle material behaviour. In this study, we utilize potassium-doping to inhibit recrystallization of tungsten sheets, a mechanism well known from incandescent lamp wires. We produced K-doped tungsten sheets by warm-rolling and subsequent cold-rolling with five different logarithmic strains up to 4.6, and equivalently rolled pure tungsten sheets. Both sets of materials are compared using EBSD and microhardness testing. In both materials, the hardness increases and the grain size along normal direction decreases with strain; the densities of low and high angle boundaries increase in particular during cold-rolling. The K-doped W sheet reaches the highest hardness with 772 ± 8 HV0.1, compared to the pure W sheet with 711 ± 14 HV0.1. All boundaries taken into account, a Hall-Petch relation describes the hardness evolution nicely, except a deviation of the K-doped tungsten sheet rolled to highest strain with its much higher hardness. The similar structural and mechanical properties of both materials in the as-rolled condition allow further studies of recrystallization behaviour of the new K-doped material with a benchmark against the equivalent pure tungsten sheets. Isochronal annealing for 1 h was performed at different temperatures between 700 °C and 2200 °C. A sharp decrease in hardness to intermediate values is observed at around 900 °C for both materials, presumably reflecting extended recovery. A second decrease is observed at 1400 °C for pure tungsten, approaching the hardness of a single crystal and indicating recrystallization and severe growth of grains. For K-doped tungsten, however, the occurrence of the second decrease is shifted to higher temperatures from 1400 °C to 1800 °C with increasing strain and an intermediate hardness is maintained up to 1800 °C. We refer this dependence of the recrystallization resistance on strain in the K-doped material to the dispersion of K-bubbles, resulting in increased Zener pinning forces retarding boundary motion

    A series of experiments was proposed in which the thermal output of the EBWR is increased to 100 Mw. The increase in thermal enengy will be accomplished by inserting 32 spike elements in the initial fuel core. The fuel selected for the spike elements was a cubic solid solution in the system ZrO/sub 2/- CaO- UO/ sub 2/. The ceramic fuel was fabricated in the form of pellets by compacting a mixture of U/sub 3/O/sub 8/, CaCO/sub 3/, and ZrO/sub 2/. The pressed pellets were sintered in air at 1675 deg C plus or minus 25 deg C to form a cubic solid solution having a composition of 9.01 wt.% UO/sub 2/ (93% enriched), 9.07 wt.% CaO, and 81.92 wt.% ZrO/sub 2/.     The effect of food availability, age or size on the RNA/DNA ratio of individually measured herring larvae: laboratory calibration

    RNA/DNA ratios in individual herring (Clupea harengus) larvae (collected from Kiel Bay, Baltic Sea, in 1989) were measured and proved suitable for determining nutritional status. Significant differences between fed and starving larvae appeared after 3 to 4 d of food deprivation in larvae older than 10 d after hatching. The RNA/DNA ratio showed an increase with age or length of the larvae and was less pronounced in starving larvae compared to fed larvae. The individual variability of RNA/DNA ratios in relation to larval length of fed larvae and of larvae deprived of food for intervals of 6 to 9 d is presented. Based on the length dependency and the individual variability found within the RNA/DNA ratios, a laboratory calibration is given to determine whether a larva caught in the field has been starving or not.     Impact on the Quality of Life of an Educational Program for the Prevention of Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders: a randomized controlled trial

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSD) are a major cause for concern in public health and the main causes of sick leave. Treatments for WMSD have given disappointing results; prevention is the best strategy, but results of preventive measures have not been consistent. To the best of our knowledge there are few studies in literature that evaluated the impact of a specific program aimed at preventing WMSD on the quality of life of employed persons.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>One hundred and one clerical and production workers in a steel trading company were enrolled in an open-label randomized controlled clinical trial (parallel groups) to compare the efficacy of an educational program for primary prevention of WMSD with control intervention. The primary outcome was a change in the physical functioning domain of the quality of life (QL) measured by Medical Outcomes Study Short Form 36 Health Survey (SF-36). The intervention group underwent six consecutive weekly sessions concerning specific orientations for the prevention of WMSD, while the control group received general health education in an identical schedule. The SF-36 and theses Work Limitation Questionnaire (WLQ) were evaluated at weeks zero, five and 26.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Baseline characteristics of the interventions groups were comparable, and both groups comprised predominantly young healthy individuals. No significant differences in the variation of the SF-36 and WLQ between the groups were observed at weeks five and 26. However, both groups demonstrated improvement in some aspects of SF-36, suggesting that both educational interventions have beneficial impacts on QL.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>A specific educational program aimed at the preventing of WMSD was comparable with general health orientation for the improvement of QL and work capacity in a sample of healthy workers during a six month period.</p> <p>Trial Registration</p> <p>ClinicalTrials.gov: <a href="http://www.clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT00981877">NCT00874718</a></p> <p>Trial Registration</p

    Heat-Induced Structural Changes Affect OVA-Antigen Processing and Reduce Allergic Response in Mouse Model of Food Allergy

    BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The egg protein ovalbumin (OVA) belongs to six most frequent food allergens. We investigated how thermal processing influences its ability to induce allergic symptoms and immune responses in mouse model of food allergy. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Effect of increased temperature (70°C and 95°C) on OVA secondary structure was characterized by circular dichroism and by the kinetics of pepsin digestion with subsequent HPLC. BALB/c mice were sensitized intraperitoneally and challenged with repeated gavages of OVA or OVA heated to 70°C (h-OVA). Levels of allergen-specific serum antibodies were determined by ELISA (IgA and IgGs) or by β-hexosaminidase release test (IgE). Specific activities of digestive enzymes were determined in brush border membrane vesicles of jejunal enterocytes. Cytokine production and changes in regulatory T cells in mesenteric lymph nodes and spleen were assessed by ELISA and FACS. Heating of OVA to 70°C caused mild irreversible changes in secondary structure compared to boiling to 95°C (b-OVA), but both OVA treatments led to markedly different digestion kinetics and Tregs induction ability in vitro, compared to native OVA. Heating of OVA significantly decreased clinical symptoms (allergic diarrhea) and immune allergic response on the level of IgE, IL-4, IL-5, IL-13. Furthermore, h-OVA induced lower activities of serum mast cell protease-1 and enterocyte brush border membrane alkaline phosphatase as compared to native OVA. On the other hand h-OVA stimulated higher IgG2a in sera and IFN-γ secretion by splenocytes. CONCLUSIONS: Minor irreversible changes in OVA secondary structure caused by thermal processing changes both its digestion and antigenic epitopes formation, which leads to activation of different T cell subpopulations, induces shift towards Th1 response and ultimately reduces its allergenicity
