Angular-dependence of magnetization switching for a multi-domain dot: experiment and simulation
We have measured the in-plane angular variation of nucleation and
annihilation fields of a multi-domain magnetic single dot with a microsquid.
The dots are Fe/Mo(110) self-assembled in UHV, with sub-micron size and a
hexagonal shape. The angular variations were quantitatively reproduced by
micromagnetic simulations. Discontinuities in the variations are observed, and
shown to result from bifurcations related to the interplay of the non-uniform

Growth modes of Fe(110) revisited: a contribution of self-assembly to magnetic materials
We have revisited the epitaxial growth modes of Fe on W(110) and Mo(110), and
propose an overview or our contribution to the field. We show that the
Stranski-Krastanov growth mode, recognized for a long time in these systems, is
in fact characterized by a bimodal distribution of islands for growth
temperature in the range 250-700°C. We observe firstly compact islands
whose shape is determined by Wulff-Kaischev's theorem, secondly thin and flat
islands that display a preferred height, ie independant from nominal thickness
and deposition procedure (1.4nm for Mo, and 5.5nm for W on the average). We
used this effect to fabricate self-organized arrays of nanometers-thick stripes
by step decoration. Self-assembled nano-ties are also obtained for nucleation
of the flat islands on Mo at fairly high temperature, ie 800°C. Finally,
using interfacial layers and solid solutions we separate two effects on the
preferred height, first that of the interfacial energy, second that of the
continuously-varying lattice parameter of the growth surface.Comment: 49 pages. Invited topical review for J. Phys.: Condens. Matte
Direct observation of domain-wall configurations transformed by spin currents
Direct observations of current-induced domain-wall propagation by
spin-polarized scanning electron microscopy are reported. Current pulses move
head-to-head as well as tail-to-tail walls in sub-micrometer Fe_{20}Ni_{80}
wires in the direction of the electron flow, and a decay of the wall velocity
with the number of injected current pulses is observed. High-resolution images
of the domain walls reveal that the wall spin structure is transformed from a
vortex to a transverse configuration with subsequent pulse injections. The
change in spin structure is directly correlated with the decay of the velocity.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Tunable magnetic properties of arrays of Fe(110) nanowires grown on kinetically-grooved W(110) self-organized templates
We report a detailed magnetic study of a new type of self-organized nanowires
disclosed briefly previously [B. Borca et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. 90, 142507
(2007)]. The templates, prepared on sapphire wafers in a kinetically-limited
regime, consist of uniaxially-grooved W(110) surfaces, with a lateral period
here tuned to 15nm. Fe deposition leads to the formation of (110) 7 nm-wide
wires located at the bottom of the grooves. The effect of capping layers (Mo,
Pd, Au, Al) and underlayers (Mo, W) on the magnetic anisotropy of the wires was
studied. Significant discrepancies with figures known for thin flat films are
evidenced and discussed in terms of step anisotropy and strain-dependent
surface anisotropy. Demagnetizing coeffcients of cylinders with a triangular
isosceles cross-section have also been calculated, to estimate the contribution
of dipolar anisotropy. Finally, the dependence of magnetic anisotropy with the
interface element was used to tune the blocking temperature of the wires, here
from 50K to 200 K
Conformational and stereoelectronic investigation of tryptamine : An AIM/NBO study
Due to the free radical scavenger properties of Tryptamine (TRA), as well as of others indole derivatives, it is in our interest to explore deeply the stereoelectronic aspects that would be relevant in their stabilization and antioxidant activity. In this work the conformational space of TRA was scanned using molecular dynamics complemented with functional density calculations at B3LYP/6-31 + G** level. Twenty one conformers of lowest energy were obtained, their electronic distributions were analyzed at a higher calculation level, thus improving the basis set (B3LYP/6-311++G**). A topological study based on Bader’s theory (AIM: atoms in molecules) and natural bond orbital (NBO) framework was performed. The study was enriched by a deep analysis of maps of molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) through a coordinated NBO/AIM analysis. The conformational preferences were explained by hyperconjugative interactions, which were revealed by NBO data. Because radical scavenging by indolic compounds is strongly modulated by their functional residues our study was related to similar analysis done previously on Indole and 1H-indole-3-acetic acid (IAA). Therefore, the conformational space of TRA was studied from a new perspective focusing on a deep analysis of the geometric and electronic properties of TRA conformers. The changes of the electronic distribution introduced by the substituent and the conformational flexibility of the side chain were addressed. Outcome after failure of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in children with acute leukemia: a study by the Société Francophone de Greffe de Moelle et de Thérapie Cellulaire (SFGM-TC)
Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (SCT) contributes to improved outcome in childhood acute leukemia (AL). However, therapeutic options are poorly defined in case of post-transplantation relapse. We aimed to compare treatment strategies in 334 consecutive children with acute leukemia relapse or progression after SCT in a recent ten-year period. Data could be analyzed in 288 patients (157 ALL, 123 AML and 8 biphenotypic AL) with a median age of 8.16 years at transplantation. The median delay from first SCT to relapse or progression was 182 days. The treatment consisted in chemotherapy alone (n=108), chemotherapy followed by second SCT (n=70), supportive/palliative care (n=67), combination of chemotherapy and DLI (n=30), or isolated reinfusion of donor lymphocytes (DLI) (n=13). The median OS duration after relapse was 164 days and differed according to therapy: DLI after chemotherapy = 385 d, second allograft = 391d, chemotherapy = 174d, DLI alone = 140d, palliative care = 43d. A second SCT or a combination of chemotherapy and donor lymphocytes infusion yielded similar outcome (HR=0.85, p=0.53) unlike chemotherapy alone (HR 1.43 p=0.04), palliative care (HR=4.24, p<0.0001) or isolated DLI (HR=1,94, p<0.04). Despite limitations in this retrospective setting, strategies including immunointervention appear superior to other approaches, mostly in AML
Group and sex differences in social cognition in bipolar disorder, schizophrenia/schizoaffective disorder and healthy people
Background: Impairment of social cognition is documented in bipolar disorder (BD) and schizophrenia/schizoaffective disorder (SCH). In healthy individuals, women perform better than men in some of its sub-domains. However, in BD and SCH the results are mixed. Our aim was to compare emotion recognition, affective Theory of Mind (ToM) and first- and second-order cognitive ToM in BD, SCH and healthy subjects, and to investigate sex-related differences. Methods: 120 patients (BD = 60, SCH = 60) and 40 healthy subjects were recruited. Emotion recognition was assessed by the Pictures of Facial Affect (POFA) test, affective ToM by the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (RMET) and cognitive ToM by several false-belief stories. Group and sex differences were analyzed using parametric (POFA, RMET) and non-parametric (false-belief stories) tests. The impact of age, intelligence quotient (IQ) and clinical variables on patient performance was examined using a series of linear/logistic regressions. Results: Both groups of patients performed worse than healthy subjects on POFA, RMET and second-order false-belief (p < 0.001), but no differences were found between them. Instead, their deficits were related to older age and/or lower IQ (p < 0.01). Subthreshold depression was associated with a 6-fold increased risk of first-order false-belief failure (p < 0.001). Sex differences were only found in healthy subjects, with women outperforming men on POFA and RMET (p ≤ 0.012), but not on first/second-order false-belief. Limitations: The cross-sectional design does not allow for causal inferences. Conclusion: BD and SCH patients had deficits in emotion recognition, affective ToM, and second-order cognitive ToM, but their performance was comparable to each other, highlighting that the differences between them may be subtler than previously thought. First-order cognitive ToM remained intact, but subthreshold depression altered their normal functioning. Our results suggest that the advantage of healthy women in the emotional and affective aspects of social cognition would not be maintained in BD and SCH

Growth mode, magnetic and magneto-optical properties of pulsed-laser-deposited Au/Co/Au(111) trilayers
The growth mode, magnetic and magneto-optical properties of epitaxial
Au/Co/Au(111) ultrathin trilayers grown by pulsed-laser deposition (PLD) under
ultra-high vacuum are presented. Sapphire wafers buffered with a
single-crystalline Mo(110) bilayer were used as substrates. Owing to
PLD-induced interfacial intermixing at the lower Co/Au(111) interface, a
layer-by-layer growth mode is promoted. Surprisingly, despite this intermixing,
ferromagnetic behavior is found at room temperature for coverings starting at 1
atomic layer (AL). The films display perpendicular magnetization with
anisotropy constants reduced by 50% compared to TD-grown or electrodeposited
films, and with a coercivity more than one order of magnitude lower (
5 mT). The magneto-optical (MO) response in the low Co thickness range is
dominated by Au/Co interface contributions. For thicknesses starting at 3 AL
Co, the MO response has a linear dependence with the Co thickness, indicative
of a continuous-film-like MO behavior
