    The puzzling temporally variable optical and X-ray afterglow of GRB 101024A

    Aim: To present the optical observations of the afterglow of GRB 101024A and to try to reconcile these observations with the X-ray afterglow data of GRB 101024A using current afterglow models Method: We employ early optical observations using the Zadko Telescope combined with X-ray data and compare with the reverse shock/forward shock model. Results: The early optical light curve reveals a very unusual steep decay index of alpha~5. This is followed by a flattening and possibly a plateau phase coincident with a similar feature in the X-ray. We discuss these observations in the framework of the standard reverse shock/forward shock model and energy injection.We note that the plateau phase might also be the signature of the formation of a new magnetar.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures.     Optical afterglow luminosities in the Swift epoch: confirming clustering and bimodality

    We show that Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) of known redshift and rest frame optical extinction detected by the Swift satellite fully confirm earlier results concerning the distribution of the optical afterglow luminosity at 12 hours after trigger (rest frame time). This distribution is bimodal and relatively narrow, especially for the high luminosity branch. This is intriguing, given that Swift GRBs have, on average, a redshift larger than pre-Swift ones, and is unexpected in the common scenario explaining the GRB afterglow. We investigate if the observed distribution can be the result of selection effects affecting a unimodal parent luminosity distribution, and find that either the distribution is intrinsically bimodal, or most (60 per cent) of the bursts are absorbed by a substantial amount of grey dust.     GRB 110205A: Anatomy of a long gamma-ray burst

    The Swift burst GRB 110205A was a very bright burst visible in the Northern hemisphere. GRB 110205A was intrinsically long and very energetic and it occurred in a low-density interstellar medium environment, leading to delayed afterglow emission and a clear temporal separation of the main emitting components: prompt emission, reverse shock, and forward shock. Our observations show several remarkable features of GRB 110205A : the detection of prompt optical emission strongly correlated with the BAT light curve, with no temporal lag between the two ; the absence of correlation of the X-ray emission compared to the optical and high energy gamma-ray ones during the prompt phase ; and a large optical re-brightening after the end of the prompt phase, that we interpret as a signature of the reverse shock. Beyond the pedagogical value offered by the excellent multi-wavelength coverage of a GRB with temporally separated radiating components, we discuss several questions raised by our observations: the nature of the prompt optical emission and the spectral evolution of the prompt emission at high-energies (from 0.5 keV to 150 keV) ; the origin of an X-ray flare at the beginning of the forward shock; and the modeling of the afterglow, including the reverse shock, in the framework of the classical fireball model.Comment: 21 pages, 5 figure (all in colors), accepted for publication in Ap

    Exploring the potential of gold(iii) cyclometallated compounds as cytotoxic agents: variations on the C^N theme

    A series of novel ((CN)-N-boolean AND) cyclometallated Au(III) complexes of general formula [Au(py(b)-H)(LL2)-L-1](n+) (py(b)-H = (CN)-N-boolean AND cyclometallated 2-benzylpyridine, L-1 and L-2 being chlorido, phosphane or glucosethiolato ligands, n = 0 or 1) have been synthesized and fully characterized using different techniques, including NMR, IR and far-IR, mass spectrometry, as well as elemental analysis. The crystal structure of one compound has been solved using X-ray diffraction methods. All compounds were tested in vitro in five human cancer cell lines including the lung, breast, colon and ovarian cancer cells. For comparison purposes, all compounds were also tested in a model of healthy human cells from the embryonic kidney. Notably, all new compounds were more toxic than their cyclometallated precursor bearing two chlorido ligands, and the derivative bearing one phosphane ligand presented the most promising toxicity profile in our in vitro screening, displaying a p53 dependent activity in colorectal cancer HCT116 cells. Finally, for the first time (CN)-N-boolean AND cyclometallated gold(III) complexes were shown to be potent inhibitors of the zinc finger protein PARP-1, involved in the mechanism of cisplatin resistance

    On leptonic models for blazars in the Fermi era

    Some questions raised by Fermi-LAT data about blazars are summarized, along with attempts at solutions within the context of leptonic models.     Supernovae and radio transients in M 82

    We present optical and near-infrared (IR) photometry and near-IR spectroscopy of SN 2004am, the only optically detected supernova (SN) in M 82. These demonstrate that SN 2004am was a highly reddened type II-P SN similar to the low luminosity type II-P events such as SNe 1997D and 2005cs. We show that SN 2004am was located coincident with the obscured super star cluster M 82-L, and from the cluster age infer a progenitor mass of 12 +7/-3 Msun. In addition to this, we present a high spatial resolution Gemini-N K-band adaptive optics image of the site of SN 2008iz and a second transient of uncertain nature, both detected so far only at radio wavelengths. Using image subtraction techniques together with archival data from the Hubble Space Telescope, we are able to recover a near-IR transient source co-incident with both objects. We find the likely extinction towards SN 2008iz to be not more than Av ~ 10. The nature of the second transient remains elusive and we regard an extremely bright microquasar in M 82 as the most plausible scenario.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

    VAST: An ASKAP Survey for Variables and Slow Transients

    The Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) will give us an unprecedented opportunity to investigate the transient sky at radio wavelengths. In this paper we present VAST, an ASKAP survey for Variables and Slow Transients. VAST will exploit the wide-field survey capabilities of ASKAP to enable the discovery and investigation of variable and transient phenomena from the local to the cosmological, including flare stars, intermittent pulsars, X-ray binaries, magnetars, extreme scattering events, interstellar scintillation, radio supernovae and orphan afterglows of gamma ray bursts. In addition, it will allow us to probe unexplored regions of parameter space where new classes of transient sources may be detected. In this paper we review the known radio transient and variable populations and the current results from blind radio surveys. We outline a comprehensive program based on a multi-tiered survey strategy to characterise the radio transient sky through detection and monitoring of transient and variable sources on the ASKAP imaging timescales of five seconds and greater.
