    Propylthiocyclopentadiene: A new synthetic route to complexes of iron and group 4 transition metals. Molecular structure of (C5H4SCH2CH2CH3)(2)ZrCl2

    The use of the propylthio-substituted cyclopentadienylsodium salt leads to 1,1'-bis(propylthio) ferrocene and dichlorobis(propylthiocyclopentadienyl)zirconium, titanium or hafnium(IV). The structure of (C5H4SCH2CH2CH3)(2)ZrCl2 has been established by X-ray analysis (orthorhombic, Pbcn, a = 11.943(1) Angstrom, b = 6.883(2) Angstrom, c = 22.412(2) Angstrom, V = 1842.4(2) Angstrom(3), Z = 4, R(F) = 0.027). The complexes have been characterized by H-1 and C-13 NMR and electrochemical studies. The physico chemical properties of 1,1'-bis(propylthio) ferrocene are discussed by a molecular approach at the extended Huckel level

    Early Cenozoic denudation of central west Britain in response to transient and permanent uplift above a mantle plume

    Upwelling mantle plumes beneath continental crust are predicted to produce difficult to quantify, modest uplift and denudation. The contribution of permanent and transient components to the uplift is also difficult to distinguish. A pulse of denudation in Britain in the Early Paleogene has been linked, although with some controversy, with the arrival of the proto-Iceland mantle plume. In this contribution we show that combining apatite and zircon (U-Th-Sm)/He and apatite fission track analyses from central west Britain with numerical modeling clearly identifies a pulse of early Cenozoic denudation. The data indicate that rock uplift and denudation were centered on the northern East Irish Sea Basin and 1.0–2.4 km of rocks were removed during the latest Cretaceous-early Paleogene. Uplift and erosion appears to have started a few million years before the earliest magmatism in the region. The regional denudation pattern mirrors the distribution of low-density magmatic rocks that has been imaged in the deep crust. However, the injection of the underplating melt is not enough to account for the total denudation. An additional regional uplift of at least 300 m is required, which is consistent with a transient thermal effect from the hot mantle plume. The rapid exhumation event ceased by ~40 Ma and the data do not require significant Neogene exhumation

    The role of slab geometry in the exhumation of cordilleran-type orogens and their forelands: Insights from northern Patagonia

    In cordilleran-type orogens, subduction geometry exerts a fundamental control on the tectonic behavior of the overriding plate. An integrated low-temperature, large thermochronological data set is used in this study to investigate the burial and exhumation history of the overriding plate in northern Patagonia (40°–45°S). Thermal inverse modeling allowed us to establish that a ~2.5–4-km-thick section originally overlaid the Jurassic–Lower Cretaceous successions deposited in half-graben systems that are presently exposed in the foreland. Removal of the sedimentary cover started in the late Early Cretaceous. This was coeval with an increase of the convergence rate and a switch to a westward absolute motion of the South American Plate that was accompanied by shallowing of the subducting slab. Unroofing was probably further enhanced by Late Cretaceous to early Paleogene opening of a slab window beneath the overriding plate. Following a tectonically quiescent period, renewed exhumation occurred in the orogen during relatively fast Neogene plate convergence. However, even the highly sensitive apatite (U-Th)/He thermochronometer does not record any coeval cooling in the foreland. The comparison between Late Cretaceous and Neogene exhumation patterns provides clear evidence of the fundamental role played by inter-plate coupling associated with shallow slab configurations in controlling plate-scale deformation. Our results, besides highlighting for the first time how the whole northern Patagonia foreland was affected by an exhumation of several kilometers since the Late Cretaceous, provide unrivalled evidence of the link between deep geodynamic processes affecting the slab and the modes and timing of unroofing of different sectors of the overriding plate.Fil: Genge, Marie C..     Thermal imprint of rift-related processes in orogens as recorded in the Pyrenees

    International audience19 The extent to which heat recorded in orogens reflects thermal conditions inherited from 20 previous rift-related processes is still debated and poorly documented. As a case study, we 21 examine the Mauléon basin in the north-western Pyrenees that experienced both extreme 22 crustal thinning and tectonic inversion within a period of ~30 Myrs. To constrain the time-23 temperature history of the basin in such a scenario, we provide new detrital zircon fission-24 track and (U-Th-Sm)/He thermochronology data. The role of rift-related processes in 25 subsequent collision is captured by inverse modeling of our thermochronological data, using 26 relationships between zircon (U-Th-Sm)/He ages and uranium content, combined with 27 thermo-kinematic models of a rift-orogen cycle. We show that the basin recorded significant 28 heating at about 100 Ma characterized by high geothermal gradients (~80°C/km). Our 29 thermo-kinematic modeling and geological constraints support the view that subcontinental 30 lithospheric mantle was exhumed at that time below the Mauléon basin. Such a high 31 geothermal gradient lasted 30 Myr after onset of convergence at ~83 Ma and was relaxed 32 during the collision phase from ~50 Ma. This study suggests that heat needed for ductile 33 shortening during convergence, is primarily inherited from extension rather than being only 34 related to tectonic and/or sedimentary burial. This should have strong implications on tectonic 35 reconstructions in many collision belts that resulted from inversion of hyper-extended rift 36 basins

    Newly introduced generalized Poisson structures based on suitable skew-symmetric contravariant tensors of even order are discussed in terms of the Schouten-Nijenhuis bracket. The associated `Jacobi identities' are expressed as conditions on these tensors, the cohomological contents of which is given.     Eustatic change modulates exhumation in the Japanese Alps

    The exhumation of bedrock is controlled by the interplay between tectonics, surface processes, and climate. The highest exhumation rates of centimeters per year are recorded in zones of highly active tectonic convergence such as the Southern Alps of New Zealand or the Himalayan syntaxes, where high rock uplift rates combine with very active surface processes. Using a combination of different thermochronometric systems including trapped-charge thermochronometry, we show that such rates also occur in the Hida Mountain Range, Japanese Alps. Our results imply that centimeter per year rates of exhumation are more common than previously thought. Our thermochronometry data allow the development of time series of exhumation rate changes at the time scale of glacial-interglacial cycles, which show a fourfold increase in baseline rates to rates of ~10 mm/yr within the past ~65 k.y. This increase in exhumation rate is likely explained by knickpoint propagation due to a combination of very high precipitation rates, climatic change, sea-level fall, range-front faulting, and moderate rock uplift. Our data resolve centimeter-scale sub-Quaternary exhumation rate changes, which show that in regions with horizontal convergence, coupling between climate, surface processes, and tectonics can exert a significant and rapid effect on rates of exhumatio

    Quality of life and functional outcome in early school-aged children after neonatal stroke: A prospective cohort study

    Background Quality of life (QoL) is recognized internationally as an efficient tool for evaluating health interventions. To our knowledge, QoL has not been specifically assessed in children after neonatal arterial ischemic stroke (AIS). Aim To study the QoL of early school-aged children who suffered from neonatal AIS, and QoL correlation to functional outcome. Method We conducted a multicenter prospective cohort study as part of a larger study in full-term newborns with symptomatic AIS. Participating families were sent anonymous QoL questionnaires (QUALIN). Functional outcome was measured using the Wee-FIM scale. Healthy controls in the same age range were recruited in public schools. Their primary caregivers filled in the QUALIN questionnaires anonymously. We used Student\u27s t-test and a rank test to compare patients and controls\u27 QoL and functional outcomes. Results 84 children with neonatal AIS were included. The control group was composed of 74 children, of which ten were later excluded due to chronic conditions. Mean ages and QUALIN median scores did not differ between patients and controls. Median Wee-FIM scores were lower in hemiplegic children than in non-hemiplegic ones (p < 0.001). QoL scores did not seem correlated to functional outcome. Interpretation Those results could support the presence of a “disability paradox” in young children following neonatal AIS
