    Lack of Metabolic Acclimation to Different Thermal Histories by Tadpoles of Limnodynastes Peroni (Anura: Leptodactylidae) 1

    Tadpoles of Limnodynastes peroni show no evidence of any ability to undergo thermal metabolic acclimation when kept at 15 degrees C and 25 degrees C for periods up to 75 days. When kept for 90-120 days, small differences were seen between rate-temperature curves of 15 degrees C and 25 degrees C history tadpoles. The reality of these differences as evidence for thermal metabolic acclimation is difficult to assess. An overall equation to describe the effect of temperature (T, C) and weight (W, grams) on oxygen consumption (QO2, ml g-1 h-1) is log10 QO2 = -2.13 + 0.05T - 0.48 log10 W, for which r2 = 0.86 (no. = 360). Q10 is 3.16 and in the relationship M +/- Wb (where M = oxygen consumption, ml h-1), the exponent b = 0.52. The results suggest that in tadpoles of L. peroni any adaptations to fluctuating temperatures may be behavioral rather than physiological or biochemical

    Tagesgang eines Myctophiden (Pisces) und zweier von ihm gefressener Mollusken des Neustons

    Neben Evertebratenplankton und Jungfischen anderer Arten wurden 25 Myctophiden der Art Centrobranchus nigroocellatus im April und Juli 1967 im Seegebiet westlich und südwestlich von Madeira mit einem Neustonnetz gefangen. 21 C. nigroocellatus hatten ausschließlich Mollusken, davon 18 nur die Gastropoden Styliola subula und Atlanta peroni gefressen. Der Myctophide und die Gastropoden steigen zeitweise in die 0-10 cm-Mikroschicht auf: Sie sind nachtpositiv mit Betonung der Abenddämmerung bei S. subula, mit Betonung der Morgendämmerung bei Atlanta peroni und mit Betonung wahrscheinlich beider Dämmerungen bei C. nigroocellatus. Der Myctophide zeigt mit der Nahrungsspezialisierung zusammenhängende morphologische Besonderheiten. With a neuston-net 25 Centrobranchus nigroocellatus were collected west of Madeira during April and July 1967. The guts of 18 myctophids contained exclusively the gastropods Styliola subula, Atlanta peroni, or both of them. The myctophid and both of the gastropods were found in the 0-10 cm-microlayer at night. S. subula was most abundant at dusk, A. peroni at dawn, whereas C. nigroocellatus was caught most frequently during dusk and dawn. Adaptions of the myctophid are discussed

    A Spectrometer to Study Elastic and Diffractive Physics at LHC

    The possibility to study elastic and diffractive physics in pp collisions at LHC is investigated. For this purpose we have considered detectors close to the beam in conjunction with the magnetic elements of the accelerator to provide a high precision spectrometer for very forward final state protons.     Research Articles in Simplified HTML: a Web-first format for HTML-based scholarly articles

    Purpose. This paper introduces the Research Articles in Simplified HTML (or RASH), which is a Web-first format for writing HTML-based scholarly papers; it is accompanied by the RASH Framework, a set of tools for interacting with RASH-based articles. The paper also presents an evaluation that involved authors and reviewers of RASH articles submitted to the SAVE-SD 2015 and SAVE-SD 2016 workshops. Design. RASH has been developed aiming to: be easy to learn and use; share scholarly documents (and embedded semantic annotations) through the Web; support its adoption within the existing publishing workflow. Findings. The evaluation study confirmed that RASH is ready to be adopted in workshops, conferences, and journals and can be quickly learnt by researchers who are familiar with HTML. Research Limitations. The evaluation study also highlighted some issues in the adoption of RASH, and in general of HTML formats, especially by less technically savvy users. Moreover, additional tools are needed, e.g., for enabling additional conversions from/to existing formats such as OpenXML. Practical Implications. RASH (and its Framework) is another step towards enabling the definition of formal representations of the meaning of the content of an article, facilitating its automatic discovery, enabling its linking to semantically related articles, providing access to data within the article in actionable form, and allowing integration of data between papers. Social Implications. RASH addresses the intrinsic needs related to the various users of a scholarly article: researchers (focussing on its content), readers (experiencing new ways for browsing it), citizen scientists (reusing available data formally defined within it through semantic annotations), publishers (using the advantages of new technologies as envisioned by the Semantic Publishing movement). Value. RASH helps authors to focus on the organisation of their texts, supports them in the task of semantically enriching the content of articles, and leaves all the issues about validation, visualisation, conversion, and semantic data extraction to the various tools developed within its Framework

    LARES succesfully launched in orbit: satellite and mission description

    On February 13th 2012, the LARES satellite of the Italian Space Agency (ASI) was launched into orbit with the qualification flight of the new VEGA launcher of the European Space Agency (ESA). The payload was released very accurately in the nominal orbit. The name LARES means LAser RElativity Satellite and summarises the objective of the mission and some characteristics of the satellite. It is, in fact, a mission designed to test Einstein's General Relativity Theory (specifically 'frame dragging' and Lense-Thirring effect). The satellite is passive and covered with optical retroreflectors that send back laser pulses to the emitting ground station. This allows accurate positioning of the satellite, which is important for measuring the very small deviations from Galilei-Newton's laws. In 2008, ASI selected the prime industrial contractor for the LARES system with a heavy involvement of the universities in all phases of the programme, from the design to the construction and testing of the satellite and separation system. The data exploitation phase started immediately after the launch under a new contract between ASI and those universities. Tracking of the satellite is provided by the International Laser Ranging Service. Due to its particular design, LARES is the orbiting object with the highest known mean density in the solar system. In this paper, it is shown that this peculiarity makes it the best proof particle ever manufactured.     Experimental investigation on the bending behaviour of hybrid and steel thin walled box beams—The role of adhesive joints

    In the automotive design, nowadays there are two fundamental drivers. On one hand there are the environmental problems, on the other hand there are the safety matters. Within this contest, the weight reduction has become a key driver in the design of vehicles and it is necessary to consider and to study the use of nonconventional materials taking advantage from their high potential of weight reduction and energy absorption capability. In this perspective, the aim of this work is the study of the structural behaviour of box beams by means of a series of three points bending tests. The examined cross sections are those typically used in automotive construction. Different type of materials (steel, composite) and joining technologies (adhesive, spot weld) have been examined, considering different configurations. The work put in evidence the advantages coming from the use of adhesive, which allows structures with important weight reduction and better mechanical properties than traditional joining solution
