Stellar Dynamics and Black Holes
Chandrasekhar's most important contribution to stellar dynamics was the
concept of dynamical friction. I briefly review that work, then discuss some
implications of Chandrasekhar's theory of gravitational encounters for motion

Reconstructing Galaxy Histories from Globular Clusters
Nearly a century after the true nature of galaxies as distant "island
universes" was established, their origin and evolution remain great unsolved
problems of modern astrophysics. One of the most promising ways to investigate
galaxy formation is to study the ubiquitous globular star clusters that
surround most galaxies. Recent advances in our understanding of the globular
cluster systems of the Milky Way and other galaxies point to a complex picture
of galaxy genesis driven by cannibalism, collisions, bursts of star formation

Explosive Nucleosynthesis: What we learned and what we still do not understand
This review touches on historical aspects, going back to the early days of
nuclear astrophysics, initiated by BFH and Cameron, discusses (i) the
required nuclear input from reaction rates and decay properties up to the
nuclear equation of state, continues (ii) with the tools to perform
nucleosynthesis calculations and (iii) early parametrized nucleosynthesis
studies, before (iv) reliable stellar models became available for the late
stages of stellar evolution. It passes then through (v) explosive environments
from core-collapse supernovae to explosive events in binary systems (including
type Ia supernovae and compact binary mergers), and finally (vi) discusses the
role of all these nucleosynthesis production sites in the evolution of
galaxies. The focus is put on the comparison of early ideas and present, very

OntoCAT -- simple ontology search and integration in Java, R and REST/JavaScript
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Ontologies have become an essential asset in the bioinformatics toolbox and a number of ontology access resources are now available, for example, the EBI Ontology Lookup Service (OLS) and the NCBO BioPortal. However, these resources differ substantially in mode, ease of access, and ontology content. This makes it relatively difficult to access each ontology source separately, map their contents to research data, and much of this effort is being replicated across different research groups.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>OntoCAT provides a seamless programming interface to query heterogeneous ontology resources including OLS and BioPortal, as well as user-specified local OWL and OBO files. Each resource is wrapped behind easy to learn Java, Bioconductor/R and REST web service commands enabling reuse and integration of ontology software efforts despite variation in technologies. It is also available as a stand-alone MOLGENIS database and a Google App Engine application.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>OntoCAT provides a robust, configurable solution for accessing ontology terms specified locally and from remote services, is available as a stand-alone tool and has been tested thoroughly in the ArrayExpress, MOLGENIS, EFO and Gen2Phen phenotype use cases.</p> <p>Availability</p> <p><url>http://www.ontocat.org</url></p
Quality of life in patients treated with first-line antiretroviral therapy containing nevirapine or efavirenz in Uganda: A prospective non-randomized study
© 2015 Mwesigire et al. Background: The goal of antiretroviral therapy (ART) is to suppress viral replication, reduce morbidity and mortality, and improve quality of life (QoL). For resource-limited settings, the World Health Organization recommends a first-line regimen of two-nucleoside reverse-transcriptase inhibitors and one non-nucleoside transcriptase inhibitor (nevirapine (NVP) or efavirenz (EFV)). There are few data comparing the QoL impact of NVP versus EFV. This study assessed the change in QoL and factors associated with QoL among HIV patients receiving ART regimens based on EFV or NVP. Methods: We enrolled 640 people with HIV eligible for ART who received regimens including either NVP or EFV. QoL was assessed at baseline, three months and six months using Physical Health Summary (PHS) and Mental Health Summary (MHS) scores and the Global Person Generated Index (GPGI). Data were analyzed using generalized estimating equations, with ART regimen as the primary exposure, to identify associations between patient and disease factors and QoL. Results: QoL increased on ART. The mean QoL scores did not differ significantly for regimens based on NVP versus EFV during follow-up for MHS and GPGI regardless of CD4 stratum and for PHS among patients with a CD4 count >250 cells/ÎŒL. The PHS-adjusted ÎČ coefficients for ART regimens based on EFV versus NVP by CD4 count strata were as follows: -1.61 (95 % CI -2.74, -0.49) for CD4 count 250 cells/ÎŒL. The corresponding MHS-adjusted ÎČ coefficients were as follows: -0.39 (-1.40, 0.62) for CD4â250 cells/ÎŒL. The GPGI-adjusted odds ratios for EFV versus NVP were 0.51 (0.25, 1.04) for CD4 count â250 cells/ÎŒL. QoL improved among patients on EFV over the 6-month follow-up period (MHS p
Antihydrogen formation in low-energy antiproton collisions with excited-state positronium atoms

The convergent close-coupling method is used to obtain cross sections for antihydrogen formation in low-energy antiproton collisions with positronium (Ps) atoms in specified initial excited states with principal quantum numbers ni= 5. The threshold behaviour as a function of the Ps kinetic energy, E, is consistent with the 1/E law expected from threshold theory for all initial states. We find that the increase in the cross sections is muted above ni= 3 and that here their scaling is roughly consistent with ni2, rather than the classically expected increase as ni4
Forest biodiversity, ecosystem functioning and the provision of ecosystem services
Forests are critical habitats for biodiversity and they are also essential for the provision of a wide range of ecosystem services that are important to human well-being. There is increasing evidence that biodiversity contributes to forest ecosystem functioning and the provision of ecosystem services. Here we provide a review of forest ecosystem services including biomass production, habitat provisioning services, pollination, seed dispersal, resistance to wind storms, fire regulation and mitigation, pest regulation of native and invading insects, carbon sequestration, and cultural ecosystem services, in relation to forest type, structure and diversity. We also consider relationships between forest biodiversity and multifunctionality, and trade-offs among ecosystem services. We compare the concepts of ecosystem processes, functions and services to clarify their definitions. Our review of published studies indicates a lack of empirical studies that establish quantitative and causal relationships between forest biodiversity and many important ecosystem services. The literature is highly skewed; studies on provisioning of nutrition and energy, and on cultural services, delivered by mixed-species forests are under-represented. Planted forests offer ample opportunity for optimising their composition and diversity because replanting after harvesting is a recurring process. Planting mixed-species forests should be given more consideration as they are likely to provide a wider range of ecosystem services within the forest and for adjacent land uses. Performance of the ATLAS muon trigger in pp collisions at [Formula: see text] TeV
The performance of the ATLAS muon trigger system is evaluated with proton-proton collision data collected in 2012 at the Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy of 8Â TeV. It is primarily evaluated using events containing a pair of muons from the decay of [Formula: see text] bosons. The efficiency of the single-muon trigger is measured for muons with transverse momentum [Formula: see text]Â GeV, with a statistical uncertainty of less than 0.01Â % and a systematic uncertainty of 0.6Â %. The [Formula: see text] range for efficiency determination is extended by using muons from decays of [Formula: see text] mesons, [Formula: see text] bosons, and top quarks. The muon trigger shows highly uniform and stable performance. The performance is compared to the prediction of a detailed simulation
Search for Higgs and Z Boson Decays to J/ÏÎł and Ï(nS)Îł with the ATLAS Detector.
A search for the decays of the Higgs and Z bosons to J/ÏÎł and Ï(nS)Îł (n=1,2,3) is performed with pp collision data samples corresponding to integrated luminosities of up to 20.3ââfb^{-1} collected at sqrt[s]=8ââTeV with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. No significant excess of events is observed above expected backgrounds and 95%Â C.L. upper limits are placed on the branching fractions. In the J/ÏÎł final state the limits are 1.5Ă10^{-3} and 2.6Ă10^{-6} for the Higgs and Z boson decays, respectively, while in the Ï(1S,2S,3S)Îł final states the limits are (1.3,1.9,1.3)Ă10^{-3} and (3.4,6.5,5.4)Ă10^{-6}, respectively.We acknowledge the support of ANPCyT,
