    Group delay in THz spectroscopy with ultra-wideband log-spiral antennae

    We report on the group delay observed in continuous-wave terahertz spectroscopy based on photomixing with phase-sensitive homodyne detection. We discuss the different contributions of the experimental setup to the phase difference \Delta\phi(\nu) between transmitter arm and receiver arm. A simple model based on three contributions yields a quantitative description of the overall behavior of \Delta\phi(\nu). Firstly, the optical path-length difference gives rise to a term linear in frequency. Secondly, the ultra-wideband log-spiral antennae effectively radiate and receive in a frequency-dependent active region, which in the most simple model is an annular area with a circumference equal to the wavelength. The corresponding term changes by roughly 6 pi between 100 GHz and 1 THz. The third contribution stems from the photomixer impedance. In contrast, the derivative (d\Delta\phi / d\nu) is dominated by the contribution of periodic modulations of \Delta\phi(\nu) caused by standing waves, e.g., in the photomixers' Si lenses. Furthermore, we discuss the Fourier-transformed spectra, which are equivalent to the waveform in a time-domain experiment. In the time domain, the group delay introduced by the log-spiral antennae gives rise to strongly chirped signals, in which low frequencies are delayed. Correcting for the contributions of antennae and photomixers yields sharp peaks or "pulses" and thus facilitates a time-domain-like analysis of our continuous-wave data.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure

    Comparación de métodos de estimación de ajuste de las funciones Weibull, SB de Johnson y beta a masas de Pinus pinaster, Pinus radiata y Pinus sylvestris en el noroeste de España

    The purpose of this study was to compare the accuracy of the Weibull, Johnson’s SB and beta distributions, fitted with some of the most usual methods and with different fixed values for the location parameters, for describing diameter distributions in even-aged stands of Pinus pinaster, Pinus radiata and Pinus sylvestris in northwest Spain. A total of 155 permanent plots in Pinus sylvestris stands throughout Galicia, 183 plots in Pinus pinaster stands throughout Galicia and Asturias and 325 plots in Pinus radiata stands in both regions were measured to describe the diameter distributions. Parameters of the Weibull function were estimated by Moments and Maximum Likelihood approaches, those of Johnson’s SB function by Conditional Maximum Likelihood and by Knoebel and Burhart’s method, and those of the beta function with the method based on the moments of the distribution. The beta and the Johnson’s SB functions were slightly superior to Weibull function for Pinus pinaster stands; the Johnson’s SB and beta functions were more accurate in the best fits for Pinus radiata stands, and the best results of the Weibull and the Johnson’s SB functions were slightly superior to beta function for Pinus sylvestris stands. However, the three functions are suitable for this stands with an appropriate value of the location parameter and estimation of parameters method.El objetivo de este estudio fue comparar la precisión de las distribuciones Weibull, SB de Johnson y beta, ajustadas por alguno de los métodos más habituales y fijando diferentes valores para los parámetros de localización, para describir distribuciones diamétricas en masas regulares de Pinus pinaster, Pinus radiata y Pinus sylvestris en el noroeste de España. Se midieron un total de 155 parcelas permanentes en masas de Pinus sylvestris en Galicia, 183 parcelas de Pinus pinaster en Galicia y en Asturias y 325 parcelas de Pinus radiata en ambas regiones para describir sus distribuciones diamétricas. Los parámetros de la función Weibull fueron estimados por las aproximaciones de los Momentos y Máxima Verosimilitud, los de la función SB de Johnson por los estimadores condicionados de Máxima Verosimilitud y por el método de Knoebel y Burkhart, y los de la función beta por el método basado en los Momentos de la distribución. Las funciones beta y SB de Johnson fueron ligeramente superiores a la función Weibull en las masas de Pinus pinaster; las funciones SB de Johnson y beta fueron más precisas en los mejores ajustes en las masas de Pinus radiata, y los mejores resultados de las funciones Weibull y SB de Johnson fueron ligeramente superiores a los de la función beta en las masas de Pinus sylvestris. No obstante, las tres funciones son apropiadas para estas masas siempre que se elija un valor de localización y método de estimación de los parámetros apropiado

    Jump capacity in cerebral palsy soccer players

    Los objetivos del presente estudio fueron determinar en jugadores de fútbol con parálisis cerebral la altura de vuelo durante la realización del salto sin contramovimiento y con contramovimiento, y observar la relación de las variables antropométricas y de la clase funcional con la altura de vuelo y con el índice elástico. Trece jugadores de fútbol 7 diagnosticados con parálisis cerebral participaron en el estudio. La altura de vuelo durante el salto sin contramovimiento (20.45±4.45 cm) y con contramovimiento (24.33±5.37 cm) fue inferior a la obtenida en otros estudios con jugadores de fútbol sin parálisis cerebral. La altura de los jugadores e índice de masa corporal mostraron una correlación significativa con la altura del salto con contramovimiento (r=0,67 y r=-0,71, respectivamente).The aims of the present study were to determine in elite soccer players with cerebral palsy the jump height during a squat jump and during a countermovement jump, and to observe the relationship of the anthropometric parameters and the functional class with the jump height and the elastic index. Thirteen “soccer 7” players diagnosed with cerebral palsy took part in the study. The jump height for a squat jump (20.45±4.45 cm) and a countermovement jump (24.33±5.37 cm) was lower than the obtained in other studies in soccer players without cerebral palsy. The height of the players and their body mass index showed a significant correlation with the jump height during a countermovement jump (r=0.67 and r=- 0.71)

    Physical Education Classes as a Precursor to the Mediterranean Diet and the Practice of Physical Activity

    Physical activity and a healthy, balanced diet are remaining unresolved issues among young people. According to the World Health Organization, young people do not get enough exercise during the week, and physical education classes are the best way to promote healthy habits. This study aims to analyze how the role of the teacher influences the frustration of psychological needs, coping strategies, motivation, and the adoption of healthy eating habits through the Mediterranean diet and the regular practice of physical activity. The study involved 1031 boys and 910 girls between the ages of 13 and 18. To explain the relationships between the different variables included in this study, a model of structural equations has been developed. The results showed that autonomy support negatively predicted the frustration of four psychological needs. The failure to meet four psychological needs negatively predicted resilience. Likewise, resilience positively predicted autonomous motivation, and this positively predicted the Mediterranean diet and the practice of physical activity. Thus, the results obtained in the present study are in line with those of various studies wherein physical education classes were seen to help consolidate healthy living habits

    Current treatment of comorbid insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea with CBTI and PAP-therapy : a systematic review

    Insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are often both present in patients with sleep- disordered-breathing. The coexistence of the two disorders shows an increase in cumulative morbidity and an overall greater illness severity. There is still considerable controversy regarding management decisions in this group of patients. This systematic review focused on more recent evidence regarding treatment of patients presenting with both clinical entities of comorbid insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea in terms of their management, especially using combinations of positive airway pressure (PAP, namely aPAP, cPAP, adaptive servo-ventilation[ASV]) and CBTi as well as each one of these two modalities alone. As a conclusion it is necessary to specifically target distinct combinations of both insomnia (initial, middle, late) and OSA (mild, moderate, severe) phenotypes. The present review gives reason to assume that both CBTi and PAP-therapy are necessary. However, it appears that distinct treatment patterns may suit different COMISA phenotypes

    A model of Mira's cometary head/tail entering the Local Bubble

    We model the cometary structure around Mira as the interaction of an AGB wind from Mira A, and a streaming environment. Our simulations introduce the following new element: we assume that after 200 kyr of evolution in a dense environment Mira entered the Local Bubble (low density coronal gas). As Mira enters the bubble, the head of the comet expands quite rapidly, while the tail remains well collimated for a 100 kyr timescale. The result is a broad-head/narrow-tail structure that resembles the observed morphology of Mira's comet.     Coordination of Dynamic Software Components with JavaBIP

    JavaBIP allows the coordination of software components by clearly separating the functional and coordination aspects of the system behavior. JavaBIP implements the principles of the BIP component framework rooted in rigorous operational semantics. Recent work both on BIP and JavaBIP allows the coordination of static components defined prior to system deployment, i.e., the architecture of the coordinated system is fixed in terms of its component instances. Nevertheless, modern systems, often make use of components that can register and deregister dynamically during system execution. In this paper, we present an extension of JavaBIP that can handle this type of dynamicity. We use first-order interaction logic to define synchronization constraints based on component types. Additionally, we use directed graphs with edge coloring to model dependencies among components that determine the validity of an online system.     Tau Be or not Tau Be? - A Perspective on Service Compatibility and Substitutability

    One of the main open research issues in Service Oriented Computing is to propose automated techniques to analyse service interfaces. A first problem, called compatibility, aims at determining whether a set of services (two in this paper) can be composed together and interact with each other as expected. Another related problem is to check the substitutability of one service with another. These problems are especially difficult when behavioural descriptions (i.e., message calls and their ordering) are taken into account in service interfaces. Interfaces should capture as faithfully as possible the service behaviour to make their automated analysis possible while not exhibiting implementation details. In this position paper, we choose Labelled Transition Systems to specify the behavioural part of service interfaces. In particular, we show that internal behaviours (tau transitions) are necessary in these transition systems in order to detect subtle errors that may occur when composing a set of services together. We also show that tau transitions should be handled differently in the compatibility and substitutability problem: the former problem requires to check if the compatibility is preserved every time a tau transition is traversed in one interface, whereas the latter requires a precise analysis of tau branchings in order to make the substitution preserve the properties (e.g., a compatibility notion) which were ensured before replacement.Comment: In Proceedings WCSI 2010, arXiv:1010.233
