    Preservation Of Morehead State History

    This project is being undertaken in an effort to preserve the buildings and history of Morehead State University. It is the goal of this project to make additions to the historic district of MSU by adding qualifying buildings to the National Register of Historic Places. By adding buildings to the Register, they would be recognized on the federal level as historic sites and receive support for their preservation. The Register seeks to protect sites of importance through many ways including the gifting of funding to ensure preservation. The goals of this project will be achieved using historical texts from our university including presidential papers, Student Government Administration documents, construction files, and other credible resources.     An Overshoot Approach to Recurrence and Transience of Markov Processes

    We develop criteria for recurrence and transience of one-dimensional Markov processes which have jumps and oscillate between +∞+\infty and −∞-\infty. The conditions are based on a Markov chain which only consists of jumps (overshoots) of the process into complementary parts of the state space. In particular we show that a stable-like process with generator −(−Δ)α(x)/2-(-\Delta)^{\alpha(x)/2} such that α(x)=α\alpha(x)=\alpha for x<−Rx<-R and α(x)=β\alpha(x)=\beta for x>Rx>R for some R>0R>0 and α,β∈(0,2)\alpha,\beta\in(0,2) is transient if and only if α+β<2\alpha+\beta<2, otherwise it is recurrent. As a special case this yields a new proof for the recurrence, point recurrence and transience of symmetric α\alpha-stable processes

    An Evaluation of Spirituality among Graduate and Professional Degree Students: Year Two

    [Note: This is a continuation of a study that was introduced at the 2013 GERA Annual Meeting.] This ongoing longitudinal study is designed to measure spirituality in graduate and professional degree students utilizing validated survey instruments. Furthermore, the study investigates perceptions regarding the role of spirituality in higher education and professional practice. We hypothesize that significant relationships exist between student perceptions on spirituality and various academic, professional, and vocational outcomes. The study is being conducted at a large, private university in the southeastern United States, which seeks to enrich both the mind and spirit of students while maintaining intellectual and religious freedom. Our study measures spirituality from inter-faith and non-faith perspectives, thereby increasing applicability to a diverse population. Results from our study will be instrumental in examining the influence of an academic institution on validated measures of spirituality. Furthermore, we hope to be the first to examine, from a qualitative and quantitative perspective, the change in daily spiritual experience among students of diverse graduate and professional degree programs at a single institution. We believe our findings have the potential to stimulate constructive dialogue on the imperative to develop methods for improved teaching and learning

    Combining the Hybrid Functional Method with Dynamical Mean-Field Theory

    We present a new method to compute the electronic structure of correlated materials combining the hybrid functional method with the dynamical mean-field theory. As a test example of the method we study cerium sesquioxide, a strongly correlated Mott-band insulator. The hybrid functional part improves the magnitude of the pd-band gap which is underestimated in the standard approximations to density functional theory while the dynamical mean-field theory part splits the 4f-electron spectra into a lower and an upper Hubbard band.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, replaced with revised version, published in Europhys.     Investigating the relationship between mitochondrial genetic variation and cardiovascular-related traits to develop a framework for mitochondrial phenome-wide association studies

    BACKGROUND: Mitochondria play a critical role in the cell and have DNA independent of the nuclear genome. There is much evidence that mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variation plays a role in human health and disease, however, this area of investigation has lagged behind research into the role of nuclear genetic variation on complex traits and phenotypic outcomes. Phenome-wide association studies (PheWAS) investigate the association between a wide range of traits and genetic variation. To date, this approach has not been used to investigate the relationship between mtDNA variants and phenotypic variation. Herein, we describe the development of a PheWAS framework for mtDNA variants (mt-PheWAS). Using the Metabochip custom genotyping array, nuclear and mitochondrial DNA variants were genotyped in 11,519 African Americans from the Vanderbilt University biorepository, BioVU. We employed both polygenic modeling and association testing with mitochondrial single nucleotide polymorphisms (mtSNPs) to explore the relationship between mtDNA variants and a group of eight cardiovascular-related traits obtained from de-identified electronic medical records within BioVU. RESULTS: Using polygenic modeling we found evidence for an effect of mtDNA variation on total cholesterol and type 2 diabetes (T2D). After performing comprehensive mitochondrial single SNP associations, we identified an increased number of single mtSNP associations with total cholesterol and T2D compared to the other phenotypes examined, which did not have more significantly associated SNPs than would be expected by chance. Among the mtSNPs significantly associated with T2D we identified variant mt16189, an association previously reported only in Asian and European-descent populations. CONCLUSIONS: Our replication of previous findings and identification of novel associations from this initial study suggest that our mt-PheWAS approach is robust for investigating the relationship between mitochondrial genetic variation and a range of phenotypes, providing a framework for future mt-PheWAS

    Perovskite-perovskite tandem photovoltaics with optimized bandgaps

    We demonstrate four and two-terminal perovskite-perovskite tandem solar cells with ideally matched bandgaps. We develop an infrared absorbing 1.2eV bandgap perovskite, FA0.75Cs0.25Sn0.5Pb0.5I3FA_{0.75}Cs_{0.25}Sn_{0.5}Pb_{0.5}I_3, that can deliver 14.8 % efficiency. By combining this material with a wider bandgap FA0.83Cs0.17Pb(I0.5Br0.5)3FA_{0.83}Cs_{0.17}Pb(I_{0.5}Br_{0.5})_3 material, we reach monolithic two terminal tandem efficiencies of 17.0 % with over 1.65 volts open-circuit voltage. We also make mechanically stacked four terminal tandem cells and obtain 20.3 % efficiency. Crucially, we find that our infrared absorbing perovskite cells exhibit excellent thermal and atmospheric stability, unprecedented for Sn based perovskites. This device architecture and materials set will enable 'all perovskite' thin film solar cells to reach the highest efficiencies in the long term at the lowest costs

    Hydrology and climatology at Laguna La Gaiba, lowland Bolivia: complex responses to climatic forcings over the last 25,000 years

    Diatom, geochemical and isotopic data provide a record of environmental change in Laguna La Gaiba, lowland Bolivia, over the last ca. 25 000 years. High-resolution diatom analysis around the last glacial–interglacial transition provides new insights into this period of change. The full and late glacial lake was generally quite shallow, but with evidence of periodic flooding. At about 13,100 cal a BP, just before the start of the Younger Dryas chronozone, the diatoms indicate shallower water conditions, but there is a marked change at about 12,200 cal a BP indicating the onset of a period of high variability, with rising water levels punctuated by periodic drying. From ca. 11,800 to 10,000 cal a BP stable, deeper water conditions persisted. There is evidence for drying in the early to middle Holocene, but not as pronounced as that reported from elsewhere in the southern hemisphere tropics of South America. This was followed by the onset of wetter conditions in the late Holocene consistent with insolation forcing. Conditions very similar to present were established about 2,100 cal a BP. A complex response to both insolation forcing and millennial scale events originating in the North Atlantic is noted
