Axiomatic foundations of quantum mechanics revisited: the case for systems
We present an axiomatization of non-relativistic Quantum Mechanics for a
system with an arbitrary number of components. The interpretation of our system
of axioms is realistic and objective. The EPR paradox and its relation with
realism is discussed in this framework. It is shown that there is no
contradiction between realism and recent experimental results.Comment: submitted to International Journal of Theoretical Physics, uses

Exact Philosophy of Space-Time
Starting from Bunge's (1977) scientific ontology, we expose a materialistic
relational theory of space-time, that carries out the program initiated by
Leibniz, and provides a protophysical basis consistent with any rigorous
formulation of General Relativity. Space-time is constructed from general
concepts which are common to any consistent scientific theory and they are
interpreted as emergent properties of the greatest assembly of things, namely,
the world.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures. Version compatible with the published one. arXiv

Rapid South Atlantic spreading changes and coeval vertical motion in surrounding continents: Evidence for temporal changes of pressure-driven upper mantle flow
International audienceThe South Atlantic region displays (1) a topographic gradient across the basin, with Africa elevated relative to South America, (2) a bimodal spreading history with fast spreading rates in Late Cretaceous and Eo-Oligocene, and (3) episodic regional uplift events in the adjacent continents concentrated in Late Cretaceous and Oligocene. Here we show that these observations can be linked by dynamic processes within Earth's mantle, through temporal changes in asthenosphere flow beneath the region. The topographic gradient implies westward, pressure-driven mantle flow beneath the basin, while the rapid spreading rate changes, on order 10 million years, require significant decoupling of regional plate motion from the large-scale mantle buoyancy distribution through a mechanically weak asthenosphere. Andean topographic growth in late Miocene can explain the most recent South Atlantic spreading velocity reduction, arising from increased plate boundary forcing associated with the newly elevated topography. But this mechanism is unlikely to explain the Late Cretaceous/Tertiary spreading variations, as changes in Andean paleoelevation at the time are small. We propose an unsteady pressure-driven flow component in the asthenosphere beneath the South Atlantic region to explain the Late Cretaceous/Tertiary spreading rate variations. Temporal changes in mantle flow due to temporal changes in regional mantle pressure gradients imply a correlation of horizontal and vertical motions: we find that this prediction from our models agrees with geologic and geophysical observations of the South Atlantic region, including episodes of passive margin uplift, regional basin reactivation, and magmatic activity
Inconsistent boundaries
Research on this paper was supported by a grant from the Marsden Fund, Royal Society of New Zealand.Mereotopology is a theory of connected parts. The existence of boundaries, as parts of everyday objects, is basic to any such theory; but in classical mereotopology, there is a problem: if boundaries exist, then either distinct entities cannot be in contact, or else space is not topologically connected (Varzi in Noûs 31:26–58, 1997). In this paper we urge that this problem can be met with a paraconsistent mereotopology, and sketch the details of one such approach. The resulting theory focuses attention on the role of empty parts, in delivering a balanced and bounded metaphysics of naive space.PostprintPeer reviewe
The Color of Childhood: The Role of the Child/Human Binary in the Production of Anti-Black Racism
The binary between the figure of the child and the fully human being is invoked with regularity in analyses of race, yet its centrality to the conception of race has never been fully explored. For most commentators, the figure of the child operates as a metaphoric or rhetorical trope, a non-essential strategic tool in the perpetuation of White supremacy. As I show in the following, the child/human binary does not present a contingent or merely rhetorical construction but, rather, a central feature of racialization. Where Black peoples are situated as objects of violence it is often precisely because Blackness has been identified with childhood and childhood is historically identified as the archetypal site of naturalized violence and servitude. I proceed by offering a historical account of how Black peoples came to inherit the subordination and dehumanization of European childhood and how White youth were subsequently spared through their partial categorization as adults
Metacognitive scaffolding boosts cognitive and neural benefits following executive attention training in children
Version of Record online: 25 October 2018Interventions including social scaffolding and metacognitive strategies have been used in
educational settings to promote cognition. In addition, increasing evidence shows that
computerized process-based
training enhances cognitive skills. However, no prior studies
have examined the effect of combining these two training strategies. The goal of this
study was to test the combined effect of metacognitive scaffolding and computer-based
training of executive attention in a sample of typically developing preschoolers at the
cognitive and brain levels. Compared to children in the regular training protocol and an
untrained active control group, children in the metacognitive group showed larger gains
on intelligence and significant increases on an electrophysiological index associated with
conflict processing. Moreover, changes in the conflict-related
brain activity predicted
gains in intelligence in the metacognitive scaffolding group. These results suggest that
metacognitive scaffolding boosts the influence of process-based
training on cognitive
efficiency and brain plasticity related to executive attention.Secretaría de Estado de Investigación,

Recent advances in electronic structure theory and their influence on the accuracy of ab initio potential energy surfaces
Recent advances in electronic structure theory and the availability of high speed vector processors have substantially increased the accuracy of ab initio potential energy surfaces. The recently developed atomic natural orbital approach for basis set contraction has reduced both the basis set incompleteness and superposition errors in molecular calculations. Furthermore, full CI calculations can often be used to calibrate a CASSCF/MRCI approach that quantitatively accounts for the valence correlation energy. These computational advances also provide a vehicle for systematically improving the calculations and for estimating the residual error in the calculations. Calculations on selected diatomic and triatomic systems will be used to illustrate the accuracy that currently can be achieved for molecular systems. In particular, the F+H2 yields HF+H potential energy hypersurface is used to illustrate the impact of these computational advances on the calculation of potential energy surfaces
