Interprofessional learning in practice: The student experience
Interprofessional learning and the development of teamworking skills are
recognised as essential for patient care and are also a government priority for
undergraduate education. Sixteen occupational therapy students worked on
an interprofessional training ward as part of their practice placement and three
of them participated in an evaluation using the nominal group technique.
Despite this small number, the evaluation identifies the value of this learning
experience in giving the students an opportunity to appreciate the importance of
interpersonal skills; to learn about other team members’ roles; and to experience
the challenges of working on a busy rehabilitation ward for older people
Discourse-centric learning analytics
Drawing on sociocultural discourse analysis and argumentation theory, we motivate a focus on learners' discourse as a promising site for identifying patterns of activity which correspond to meaningful learning and knowledge construction. However, software platforms must gain access to qualitative information about the rhetorical dimensions to discourse contributions to enable such analytics. This is difficult to extract from naturally occurring text, but the emergence of more-structured annotation and deliberation platforms for learning makes such information available. Using the Cohere web application as a research vehicle, we present examples of analytics at the level of individual learners and groups, showing conceptual and social network patterns, which we propose as indicators of meaningful learning
Evaluation of specific heat for superfluid helium between 0 - 2.1 K based on nonlinear theory
The specific heat of liquid helium was calculated theoretically in the Landau
theory. The results deviate from experimental data in the temperature region of
1.3 - 2.1 K. Many theorists subsequently improved the results of the Landau
theory by applying temperature dependence of the elementary excitation energy.
As well known, many-body system has a total energy of Galilean covariant form.
Therefore, the total energy of liquid helium has a nonlinear form for the
number distribution function. The function form can be determined using the
excitation energy at zero temperature and the latent heat per helium atom at
zero temperature. The nonlinear form produces new temperature dependence for
the excitation energy from Bose condensate. We evaluate the specific heat using
iteration method. The calculation results of the second iteration show good
agreement with the experimental data in the temperature region of 0 - 2.1 K,
where we have only used the elementary excitation energy at 1.1 K.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Journal of Physics: Conference

Decoherence in qubits due to low-frequency noise
The efficiency of the future devices for quantum information processing is
limited mostly by the finite decoherence rates of the qubits. Recently a
substantial progress was achieved in enhancing the time, which a solid-state
qubit demonstrates a coherent dynamics. This progress is based mostly on a
successful isolation of the qubits from external decoherence sources. Under
these conditions the material-inherent sources of noise start to play a crucial
role. In most cases the noise that quantum device demonstrate has 1/f spectrum.
This suggests that the environment that destroys the phase coherence of the
qubit can be thought of as a system of two-state fluctuators, which experience
random hops between their states. In this short review we discuss the current
state of the theory of the decoherence due to the qubit interaction with the
fluctuators. We describe the effect of such an environment on different
protocols of the qubit manipulations - free induction and echo signal. It turns
out that in many important cases the noise produced by the fluctuators is
non-Gaussian. Consequently the results of the interaction of the qubit with the
fluctuators are not determined by the pair correlation function only.
We describe the effect of the fluctuators using so-called spin-fluctuator
model. Being quite realistic this model allows one to evaluate the qubit
dynamics in the presence of one fluctuator exactly. This solution is found, and
its features, including non-Gaussian effects are analyzed in details. We extend
this consideration for the systems of large number of fluctuators, which
interact with the qubit and lead to the 1/f noise. We discuss existing
experiments on the Josephson qubit manipulation and try to identify
non-Gaussian behavior.Comment: 25 pages, 7 figure
'Surely the most natural scenario in the world’: Representations of ‘Family’ in BBC Pre-school Television
Historically, the majority of work on British children’s television has adopted either an institutional or an audience focus, with the texts themselves often overlooked. This neglect has meant that questions of representation in British children’s television – including issues such as family, gender, class or ethnicity - have been infrequently analysed in the UK context. In this article, we adopt a primarily qualitative methodology and analyse the various textual manifestations of ‘family’, group, or community as represented in a selected number of BBC pre-school programmes. In doing so, we question the (limited amount of) international work that has examined representations of the family in children’s television, and argue that nuclear family structures do not predominate in this sphere
Flux Exclusion Superconducting Quantum Metamaterial: Towards Quantum-level Switching
Nonlinear and switchable metamaterials achieved by artificial structuring on the subwavelength scale have become a central topic in photonics research. Switching with only a few quanta of excitation per metamolecule, metamaterial's elementary building block, is the ultimate goal, achieving which will open new opportunities for energy efficient signal handling and quantum information processing. Recently, arrays of Josephson junction devices have been proposed as a possible solution. However, they require extremely high levels of nanofabrication. Here we introduce a new quantum superconducting metamaterial which exploits the magnetic flux quantization for switching. It does not contain Josephson junctions, making it simple to fabricate and scale into large arrays. The metamaterial was manufactured from a high-temperature superconductor and characterized in the low intensity regime, providing the first observation of the quantum phenomenon of flux exclusion affecting the far-field electromagnetic properties of the metamaterial
Late-time oscillatory behaviour for self-gravitating scalar fields
This paper investigates the late-time behaviour of certain cosmological
models where oscillations play an essential role. Rigorous results are proved
on the asymptotics of homogeneous and isotropic spacetimes with a linear
massive scalar field as source. Various generalizations are obtained for
nonlinear massive scalar fields, -essence models and gravity. The
effect of adding ordinary matter is discussed as is the case of nonlinear
scalar fields whose potential has a degenerate zero.Comment: 17 pages, additional reference

Theoretical study of the absorption spectra of the lithium dimer
For the lithium dimer we calculate cross sections for absorption of radiation
from the vibrational-rotational levels of the ground X [singlet Sigma g +]
electronic state to the vibrational levels and continua of the excited A
[singlet Sigma u +] and B [singlet Pi u] electronic states. Theoretical and
experimental data are used to characterize the molecular properties taking
advantage of knowledge recently obtained from photoassociation spectroscopy and
ultra-cold atom collision studies. The quantum-mechanical calculations are
carried out for temperatures in the range from 1000 to 2000 K and are compared
with previous calculations and measurements.Comment: 20 pages, revtex, epsf, 6 fig
