    Dominance behaviour and regulation of foraging in the primitively eusocial wasp Ropalidia marginata (Lep.) (Hymenoptera: Vespidae)

    Ropalidia marginata is a primitively eusocial, polistine wasp widely distributed in peninsular India. In spite of its primitively eusocial status, queens of R. marginata are surprisingly docile and behaviourally non-dominant (except during the first week or so of their careers as queens). Yet they successfully maintain reproductive monopoly throughout their careers, probably through the use of pheromones. Workers exhibit dominance-subordinate interactions but these behaviours are not involved in regulating reproductive competition among the workers because workers with high dominance ranks are not necessarily the ones who replace lost queens. We have speculated and provided correlational evidence before that dominance-subordinate interactions among the workers have been co-opted in this species for the workers to regulate each other's foraging. Here, we provide experimental evidence in support of the speculation, by reducing demand for food and showing that this results in a significant decrease in the frequency of dominance-subordinate interactions among the workers

    The Belgian policy of funding antimicrobial stewardship in hospitals and trends of selected quality indicators for antimicrobial use, 1999-2010: a longitudinal study

    Objectives: In order to improve antimicrobial (AM) use, a policy of providing technical and financial support to AM management teams (AMTs) was rolled out in all Belgian hospitals between 2002 and 2008. We aimed to analyse the association of this policy with AM use for the two indications accounting for the largest number of patients receiving AM: prophylaxis for major lower limb orthopaedic surgery and pneumonia. Design, setting, participants: We used patient-level data routinely collected in all Belgian acute care hospitals between 1999 and 2010. We modelled trends for selected quality indicators (QIs) using the year of AMT implementation in each hospital as the main 'change point', with fine-tuned case-mix adjustment. Of all admissions for lower limb orthopaedic surgery, and pneumonia between 1999 and 2010, 90% (325 094) and 95% (327 635), respectively, were found eligible for analyses. Outcomes: The surgery QI was defined as: cefazolin, dose in the expected range, and no use of other AM. For pneumonia, QIs were: ratio of oral/parenteral defined daily doses (DDD, O/P QI), and mean number of DDD minus penicillin, per 100 days of hospitalisation (DDD QI). Results: Between 1999 and 2010, the surgery QI improved from 59% to 71%, the O/P QI from 0.72 to 0.97, and the DDD QI from 96 to 64. Heterogeneity between hospitals was high. Overall, no association was found with the year of implementation of the AMT. Conclusions: Improvements have been observed but could not be related at the national level to the policy under study. However, these results cannot be extrapolated to other QIs for AM use in hospitals. Our findings do not question the need for AMT, nor the need for continuation of AMT funding. Several recommendations can be made in order to make the best of Belgium's unique political and financial commitments in that field

    Isolation and characterisation of microsatellite loci for two species of Spinturnicid wing mites (Spinturnix myoti and Spinturnix bechsteini)

    To investigate the potential for host-parasite coadaptation between bats and their wing mites, we developed microsatellite loci for two species of Spinturnix mites. For Spinturnix myoti, parasite of Myotis myotis, we were able to develop nine polymorphic loci and screened them in 100 mites from five bat colonies. For S. bechsteini, parasite of M. bechsteinii, we developed five polymorphic loci, which were also screened in 100 mites from five bat colonies. In both species, all markers were highly polymorphic (22-46 and 6-23 alleles per locus respectively). The majority of markers for both species exhibited departure from Hardy-Weinberg proportions (8 of 9 and 3 of 5, respectively). One marker pair in S. myoti showed evidence for linkage disequilibrium. As the observed departures from Hardy-Weinberg proportions are most likely a consequence of the biology of the mites, the described microsatellite loci should be useful in studying population genetics and host-parasite dynamics of Spinturnix myoti and Spinturnix bechsteini in relation to their bat hosts

    The effect of host social system on parasite population genetic structure: comparative population genetics of two ectoparasitic mites and their bat hosts.

    BACKGROUND: The population genetic structure of a parasite, and consequently its ability to adapt to a given host, is strongly linked to its own life history as well as the life history of its host. While the effects of parasite life history on their population genetic structure have received some attention, the effect of host social system has remained largely unstudied. In this study, we investigated the population genetic structure of two closely related parasitic mite species (Spinturnix myoti and Spinturnix bechsteini) with very similar life histories. Their respective hosts, the greater mouse-eared bat (Myotis myotis) and the Bechstein's bat (Myotis bechsteinii) have social systems that differ in several substantial features, such as group size, mating system and dispersal patterns. RESULTS: We found that the two mite species have strongly differing population genetic structures. In S. myoti we found high levels of genetic diversity and very little pairwise differentiation, whereas in S. bechsteini we observed much less diversity, strongly differentiated populations and strong temporal turnover. These differences are likely to be the result of the differences in genetic drift and dispersal opportunities afforded to the two parasites by the different social systems of their hosts. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that host social system can strongly influence parasite population structure. As a result, the evolutionary potential of these two parasites with very similar life histories also differs, thereby affecting the risk and evolutionary pressure exerted by each parasite on its host

    Age-specific variation of resistance to oxidative stress in the greater flamingo ( Phoenicopterus ruber roseus )

    Birds exhibit exceptional longevity and are thus regarded as a convenient model to study the intrinsic mechanisms of aging. The oxidative stress theory of aging suggests that individuals age because molecules, cells, tissues, organs, and, ultimately, animals accumulate oxidative damage over time. Accumulation of damage progressively reduces the level of antioxidant defences that are expected to decline with age. To test this theory, we measured the resistance of red blood cells to free radical attack in a captive population of greater flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber roseus) of known age ranging from 0.3 to 45years. We observed a convex relationship with young adults (12-20years old) having greater resistance to oxidative stress than immature flamingos (5months old) and old flamingos (30-45years old). Our results suggest that the antioxidant detoxifying system must go through a maturation process before being completely functional. It then declines in older adults, supporting the oxidative theory of aging. Oxidative stress could hence play a significant role in shaping the pattern of senescence in a very long-lived bird specie

    Intercultural education for integrated education system

    This paper is a brief description of the current developments in the educational system in the country and the need reform it. In terms of inter-ethnic relations in education, more prominent is the need for its interethnic integration. One of the ways to save and overcome the misunderstandings, and the integration of this system is seen precisely in the intercultural education that acknowledges and respects diversity and supports diversity or diversity in all areas of human life. That kind of education makes the students sensitive to the idea that people have naturally developed a different way of life, customs, traditions, values and worldview. The intercultural education tends to overcome the passive coexistence and to create a developed and sustainable way of living in a multicultural society as ours. This kind of upbringing and education should build individuals with intercultural competences who are capable of living and working in a multicultural environment. Hence, by analysing the advantages, principles, objectives and principles of intercultural education we will point out its necessity and a suitable way for introducing it into the curriculum, with the aim of improving and integrating the inter-ethnicity in the educational system, where it is most necessary and would give productive results in terms of building a healthy, stable and prosperous society.     Novel method to measure the intrinsic spatial resolution in PET detectors based on monolithic crystals

    [EN] The main aim of this work is to provide a method to retrieve the intrinsic spatial resolution of a gamma-ray detector block based on monolithic crystals within an assembled scanner. This method consists on a discrimination of the data using a software collimation process. The results are compared with an alternative method of separating two detector blocks far enough to produce a "virtual" source collimation due to the geometric constraints on the allowed coincidence event angles. A theoretical model has been deduced to fit the measured light distribution profiles, allowing estimating the detector intrinsic spatial resolution. The detector intrinsic spatial resolution is expected to follow a Gaussian distribution and the positron-emitter source shape, given the small size of a Na-22 source with 0.25 mm in diameter, can be assumed to follow a Lorentzian profile. However, the collimation of the data modifies the source shape that is no longer a pure Lorentzian distribution. Therefore, the model is based on the convolution of a Gaussian shaped distribution (contribution of the detector) and a modified Lorentzian distribution (contribution of the collimated source profile) that takes into account the collimation effect. Three LYSO crystals geometries have been studied in the present work, namely a 10 mm thick trapezoidal monolithic block, and two rectangular monolithic blocks with thicknesses of 15 mm and 20 mm, respectively. All the blocks have size dimensions of 50 mm x 50 mm. The experimental results yielded an intrinsic detector spatial resolution of 0.64 +/- 0.02 mm, 0.82 +/- 0.02 and 1.07 +/- 0.03 mm, for the 10 mm, 15 mm and 20 mm thick blocks, respectively, when the source was placed at the center of the detector. The detector intrinsic spatial resolution was moreover evaluated across one of the axis of each crystal. These values worsen to an average value of 0.68 +/- 0.04 mm, 0.90 +/- 0.14 and 1.29 +/- 0.19 mm, respectively, when the whole crystal size is considered, as expected. These tests show an accurate method to determine the intrinsic spatial resolution of monolithic-based detector blocks, once assembled in the PET system.This project has received funding from the European Research Council, Spain (ERC) under the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program (grant agreement No 695536).
