    Splenic infarction during Plasmodium ovale acute malaria: first case reported

    The splenic complications of acute malaria include two different prognostic and treatment entities: splenic infarction and splenic rupture. This is the first case of splenic infarction during an acute malaria due to Plasmodium ovale in a 34-year-old man. As in the majority other described cases of splenic infarction, the course was spontaneously favourable, suggesting that this complication was relatively benign compared to splenic rupture, which is life-threatening and usually necessitating surgery

    Viral sequence variation in chronic carriers of hepatitis C virus has a low impact on liver steatosis.: HCV variability and steatosis

    International audienceMost clinical studies suggest that the prevalence and severity of liver steatosis are higher in patients infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 3 than in patients infected with other genotypes. This may reflect the diversity and specific intrinsic properties of genotype 3 virus proteins. We analyzed the possible association of particular residues of the HCV core and NS5A proteins known to dysregulate lipid metabolism with steatosis severity in the livers of patients chronically infected with HCV. We used transmission electron microscopy to quantify liver steatosis precisely in a group of 27 patients, 12 of whom were infected with a genotype 3 virus, the other 15 being infected with viruses of other genotypes. We determined the area covered by lipid droplets in liver tissues and analyzed the diversity of the core and NS5A regions encoded by the viral variants circulating in these patients. The area covered by lipid droplets did not differ significantly between patients infected with genotype 3 viruses and those infected with other genotypes. The core and NS5A protein sequences of the viral variants circulating in patients with mild or severe steatosis were evenly distributed throughout the phylogenic trees established from all the collected sequences. Thus, individual host factors seem to play a much greater role than viral factors in the development of severe steatosis in patients chronically infected with HCV, including those infected with genotype 3 viruses

    INTRODUCTION: Plusieurs études internationales mettent en évidence des conduites dopantes chez les militaires notamment la prise de compléments protéinés et celle de boissons "énergisantes" à haute teneur en caféine. En l'absence de données françaises, cette étude a pour but de mettre en évidence la réalité de pratiques à ne pas méconnaître dans nos armées. METHODES: Il s'agit d'une étude descriptive transversale basée sur un auto-questionnaire proposé à tous les militaires consultants de treize antennes médicales choisies arbitrairement pendant huit semaines. RESULTATS: 60% des sujets déclaraient la consommation d'au moins une substance. 49% consommaient des compléments à base de caféine et 25% des compléments protéinés. Les habitudes de consommations (performances à améliorer, approvisionnement, fréquence de prises) étaient cohérentes avec les caractéristiques des substances. 39% des militaires déclaraient une motivation liée à leur métier et 63% s'estimaient non informés sur ces pratiques.     International audienceA series of hitherto unknown (1,4-disubstituted-1,2,3-triazol)-(E)-2-methyl-but-2-enyl nucleosides phosphonate prodrugs bearing 4-substituted-1,2,3-triazoles were prepared in a straight approach through an olefin acyclic cross metathesis as the key synthetic step. All novel compounds were evaluated for their antiviral activities against HBV, HIV and SARS-CoV-2. Among these molecules, only compound 15j, a hexadecyloxypropyl (HDP)/(isopropyloxycarbonyl-oxymethyl)-ester (POC) prodrug, showed activity against HBV in Huh7 cell cultures with 62% inhibition at 10 μM, without significant cytotoxicity (IC50 = 66.4 μM in HepG2 cells, IC50 = 43.1 μM in HepG2 cells) at 10 μM

    International audienceWe report the strategy leading to the first detection of variant of concern 202012/01 (VOC) in France (21 December 2020). First, the spike (S) deletion H69-V70 (ΔH69/ΔV70), identified in certain SARS-CoV-2 variants including VOC, is screened for. This deletion is associated with a S-gene target failure (SGTF) in the three-target RT-PCR assay (TaqPath kit). Subsequently, SGTF samples are whole genome sequenced. This approach revealed mutations co-occurring with ΔH69/ΔV70 including S:N501Y in the VOC
