Everyday the Same Picture: Popularity and Content Diversity

Facebook is flooded by diverse and heterogeneous content, from kittens up to music and news, passing through satirical and funny stories. Each piece of that corpus reflects the heterogeneity of the underlying social background. In the Italian Facebook we have found an interesting case: a page having more than $40K$ followers that every day posts the same picture of a popular Italian singer. In this work, we use such a page as a control to study and model the relationship between content heterogeneity on popularity. In particular, we use that page for a comparative analysis of information consumption patterns with respect to pages posting science and conspiracy news. In total, we analyze about $2M$ likes and $190K$ comments, made by approximately $340K$ and $65K$ users, respectively. We conclude the paper by introducing a model mimicking users selection preferences accounting for the heterogeneity of contents

Retratos da velhice - um duplo percurso : metodologico e cognitivo

Um duplo percurso: metodológico e cognitivo reside no esforço de procurar oferecer princípios de uma reflexão metodológica em tomo da memória de pessoas idosas, estudo este trabalhado a partir de dois suportes da comunicação humana: a verbalidade e a visualidade. Desta forma, os grandes momentos deste trabalho se desenvolverão no horizonte de três eixos correlacionados: a memória, a verbalidade e a visualidade, reservando à integral idade da trajetória desta Dissertação de Mestrado uma vertente e uma estrutura essencialmente exploratória em tomo dos "Retratos da Velhice". Os dois suportes comunicacionais serão pólos de entrada neste mundo da memória de idosos: a visualidade exposta por meio de imagens guardadas nos "baús fotográficos" destes idosos e a verbalidade, oriunda e concretizada a partir de entrevistas. CONSOLIDAÇÃO FISCAL NOS ESTADOS BRASILEIROS: UMA ANÁLISE DE DURAÇÃO

The objective of this paper is to analyze the Brazilian state fiscal consolidation in the period 1986-2001. For that propose, we apply the duration models methodology. Henceforth, we try to list the main features that can explain the probability of the continuity of a state fiscal adjustment conditional to the duration of this adjustment up to this moment. The non-parametric results suggest that the probability of the continuity of a fiscal consolidation falls dramatically after the first year and even more after the second one. The parametric analysis shows that there is a core of relevant variables, such as: the Number of Fails, the ratio Personal Costs/Net Current Revenue, the dummy variable to the years before the Brazilian Constitution of 1988, the dummy variable to the years after the refinance law 9496/97 and the Polarization of the Political Colligation in the states.

Fotobiografia: Por Uma Metodologia Da Estética Em Antropologia

As Fotobiografias de pessoas idosasapresentadas neste estudo nasceram de umaproposta metodológica a qual, sem desprezaro verbal, priorizou e deu confiança aotrabalho das imagens. Por serem carregadasde memórias, elas, as imagens puderam,diferentemente do verbal, “refletir” e“pensar”, “redescobrir” e “esquecer” amemória de pessoas idosas. A pesquisadesenvolveu etapas de um percursometodológico de natureza visual trabalhandocom conjuntos fotográficos compostos por20, 10 e três fotografias. Cinco Fotobiografiasacompanham o estudo e nelas, o verbal e ovisual guardam em si, relevância singular, istoé, partilham diferentemente uma mesmatarefa: representar a vida de uma pessoa idosacomo um pequeno filme, que ela monta,desmonta ou remonta.181927-4

AS MUITAS VIDAS DAS IMAGENS

This article seeks to reflect about research challenges with vernacular photographic archives in human sciences, mostly in anthropology. On one hand, it reflects about theoretical-methodological complexities that these spellings (Ingold, 2007) inscribe as narratives and life stories, when expressed as “photobiographies” (Bruno, 2009), and, on the other hand, it places itself these same issues, when family photographs become anonymous, “orphan photographs” (Bruno, 2016), and add questions about the writing of other “anonymous” lives of photographs and people. The appearance of discarding family albums gives rise to almost unknown environments, in which these post-albums archives are left, hidden or ruined in the “limbus” of analogue pictures. A kind of “dead zone”, which problematizes the concept of trash archive (Assman, 2011) and points to powerful reflections about an anthropology of left-over (Debary, 2017) and from “an anthropology of unimportant images” (Samain, 2003).Este artigo procura refletir sobre desafios de pesquisa com arquivos fotográficos vernaculares nas ciências humanas, em especial na antropologia. Reflete-se, por um lado, sobre as complexidades teórico-metodológicas que essas grafias (Ingold, 2007) inscrevem como narrativas e histórias de vida, quando expressas como “fotobiografias” (Bruno, 2009). Por outro, reposiciona-se essas mesmas problemáticas, quando fotografias de família tornam-se anônimas, “fotografias órfãs” (Bruno, 2016), e adicionam interrogações sobre o grafar outras vidas “anônimas” de fotografias e pessoas. A insurgência do descarte dos álbuns de família faz emergir ambientes quase desconhecidos, nos quais esses arquivos “pós-álbuns”, se encontram abandonados, escondidos ou arruinados no “limbo” de fotografias analógicas. Uma espécie de “zona morta” que se torna um “bioma” de arquivos ou um “contra-arquivo”, a problematizar a noção de lixo-arquivo (Assman, 2011) e a potencializar reflexões acerca de uma “antropologia dos restos” (Debary, 2017) e de “uma antropologia das imagens sem importância” (Samain, 2003)

File and images: heuristic and visual issues on the disclosure of Etienne Samain’s Kamayurá File

Este artigo tem o propósito de apresentar uma reflexão sobre os resultados metodológicos e de uma experimentação visual no curso de uma pesquisa antropológica, que se colocou diante do desafio ontológico de abrir um arquivo de 500 fotografias adormecidas durante quase décadas. O arquivo constituído por imagens indígenas, Kamayurá do Alto Xingu, pertencentes ao acervo pessoal do antropólogo, Etienne Samain, foi interrogado à luz da sua própria condição de silêncio e do imperativo de privilegiar, antes de tudo, o ato de olhar e escutar as imagens. Neste artigo, o leitor poderá conhecer o percurso metodológico traçado, acompanhando parte dos resultados provenientes de uma dupla experiência de trabalho realizada neste arquivo fotográfico sobre os índios Kamayurá - a da pesquisa e a do próprio produtor das imagens. Em seguida poderá  ver a experimentação visual das Cartas Poéticas de Imagens, constructo de uma experiência de montagem visual com as fotografias do arquivo.This article presents some considerations on the methodological results, as well as the results from a visual experiment developed during an anthropological research, whose ontological challenge was to open a 500 photographs file that was asleep for almost four decades. The file with images portraying Kamayurá indigenous persons from Alto Xingu, belonging to the personal file of the anthropologist Etienne Samain, was inquired in light of its own condition of silence and the imperative of privileging, in the first place, the act of looking at and listening to the images. In this article, the reader will learn the methodological course traced, following part of its results from a double experience carried out with this photographic file – the researcher’s and the file producer’s. Fontes de silício na indução de resistência a insetos-praga e no desenvolvimento de plantas de batata inglesa.

O controle de insetos-praga exclusivamente com inseticidas sintéticos ocasiona diversos efeitos colaterais. A indução de resistência de plantas é uma estratégia em potencial para prevenir danos de insetos na cultura. Os objetivos deste trabalho foram avaliar os efeitos de fontes de silício na indução de resistência aos principais insetos-praga, no desenvolvimento e produtividade da cultura de batata inglesa em cultivo orgânico. As plantas foram submetidas aos seguintes tratamentos: 1- adubação via solo com agrosilício na dosagem correspondente a 8 t/ha; 2- adubação foliar com solução de ácido silícico a 0,8%; 3- adubação foliar com solução de cinza de eucalipto a 5% e 4- testemunha. As avaliações dos insetos-praga foram realizadas aos 20, 40 e 60 dias após a emergência das plantas, contando-se o número de pulgões, injúrias foliares provocadas por Diabrotica spp. e folíolos minados por Liriomyza spp. Foi determinado a altura, o diâmetro e a produtividade, bem como os teores de tanino e lignina das plantas. O ácido silícico atuou como indutor da síntese de tanino na planta e a cinza e o agrosilício agiram como promotores do desenvolvimento vegetativo das plantas

A verb-visual cartography of the old age: photobiographies and memories assembly

En este artículo se pretende discutir cuestiones ligadas a una investigación doctoral sobre las potencialidades presentes dentro de las imágenes fotográficas, cuando se trata de comprender cómo, por medio de ellas, se construye y se organiza la memoria de personas de edad avanzada. Delante de una imagen, somos todos, de una manera u otra, invitados a penetrar la espesura de una historia que nos remite, a revivir y a reactualizar el pasado, muchas veces por medio de palabras y silencios. Se trata de pensar la memoria de personas de edad avanzada, como el lugar de una arquitectura singular y de un trabajo de “pensamiento/reflexión”, que las propias imágenes les revelan y les hacen descubrir. El ejercicio exploratorio que ofrecemos tendrá como intención levantar cuestiones relacionadas a las elecciones y las formas de montaje de las fotografías. Elecciones y arreglos que representan, pensamos, una singular “fotobiografía” o, simplemente, una autobiografía visual1030It is intended to discuss in this article questions related to a PhD research about the potentialities inside the photographical image, particularly when it comes to the question of how (through pictures) they build and organize the senior people’s memory. When in front of images, we are all invited to penetrate, in one way or another, in the thickness of a history to which it send us to revive and update the past through words and silence. It is a dare to think a senior people’s memory as the place of a singular architecture and of the work of thought and reflection that unveils themselves on their own. L’evidenza archeologica dei grandi commerci in Sogdiana lungo le Vie della Seta

Sogdiana is a historical central Asian region laying between present southern Uzbekistan and western Tadžikistan. It was crossed by the Silk Roads: the term was coined by the German geographer ferdinand von Richthofen to indicate a network of trade routes linking the eastern and western territories of the ancient world. The first known commercial exchanges in central Asia on a regular base date back to the second millennium Bc, but in the second century Bc the Silk Roads inaugurated a new era in the trade throughout Eurasia. It is now accepted that a great number of land and sea routes made this network, that was used by merchants for a longer time than initially thought. Although the von Richthofen term is conventionally still employed in modern studies, scholars agree that silk was only one of the several carried goods. Sogdiana could acquire a peculiar role in the central Asian context, acting as a leading cultural intermediary between the different worlds represented by goods and people – merchants, artists, scientists, priests – that travelled along the Silk Roads. from the mid-sixth century Bc, Sogdiana was part of the Achaemenid Empire and was ruled nominally by the satrap of Bactria. After the fall of the empire and the death of Alexander the Great, the region was included in the Greco-Bactrian domains and passed through a period of great prosperity

Images of old-age, images of childhood: forms that think about themselves
