STEAM and Environmental Justice in an Interdisciplinary Context

This course proposes an interdisciplinary perspective, envisions unique synergies between environmental justice concepts and STEAM projects on mining, and aims to solidify a foundation based on justice, equity, equality, and empathy for STEM students and faculty. Our (S)TEAM made of professors in three academic departments underscores interdisciplinary and diversity connections through an interdisciplinary team-taught course, units on environmental justice related to mining, teaching of literary texts, and STEAM projects. Developments in Longwall Ventilation

Rapid development in longwall mining technology has brought significant changes in panel layout and geometry. These changes require adaptations in the ventilation system to provide sufficient air quantities in longwall face and bleeder areas. At CONSOL, various longwall bleeder systems in the Pittsburgh No. 8 Seam have been studied with detailed ventilation surveys. Computer model network simulations were conducted from these surveys to study the effects of different bleeder configurations and ventilation adjustments. This paper examines the relationships between the longwall face air quantity and the convergence in the tailgate-to-bleeder entries, number of development entries, bleeder fan pressure and the tailgate ventilation scheme. It shows that, using conventional ventilation patterns, the face air quantity may be limited if the gob caves tightly. In such cases, modification of the ventilation pattern to an internal bleeder system, combined with appropriate tailgate ventilation and higher bleeder fan pressure may be required. Probleme bei der Befragung älterer Menschen: methodische Erfahrungen aus einer schriftlichen Befragung zu Tätigkeitsformen im Ruhestand

Nach einer Einführung in generelle Probleme schriftlicher Befragungen werden die Ergebnisse zweier Vorstudien und ihre Konsequenzen für die Hauptbefragung erläutert. Anschließend wird auf methodische Einzelaspekte der Hauptbefragung eingegangen. Dabei wird ermittelt, daß bei einer sorgfältigen Planung und intensiven Vorarbeiten schriftliche Befragungen selbst bei ansonsten schlechter zu befragenden Bevölkerungsgruppen wie alten Menschen problemlos einsetzbar sind. Sie führen zu vergleichbaren, wenn nicht gar höheren Ausschöpfungsquoten als die persönliche mündliche oder die telefonische Befragung. Darüber hinaus sind die Ergebnisse zum Teil besser überprüfbar, ein unkonrollierter Einfluß des Interviewers auf die Auswahl der Befragungspersonen bzw. die gegebenen Antworten entfällt. (psz

Long rDNA amplicon sequencing of insect-infecting nephridiophagids reveals their affiliation to the Chytridiomycota and a potential to switch between hosts

Nephridiophagids are unicellular eukaryotes that parasitize the Malpighian tubules of numerous insects. Their life cycle comprises multinucleate vegetative plasmodia that divide into oligonucleate and uninucleate cells, and sporogonial plasmodia that form uninucleate spores. Nephridiophagids are poor in morphological characteristics, and although they have been tentatively identified as early-branching fungi based on the SSU rRNA gene sequences of three species, their exact position within the fungal tree of live remained unclear. In this study, we describe two new species of nephridiophagids (Nephridiophaga postici and Nephridiophaga javanicae) from cockroaches. Using long-read sequencing of the nearly complete rDNA operon of numerous further species obtained from cockroaches and earwigs to improve the resolution of the phylogenetic analysis, we found a robust affiliation of nephridiophagids with the Chytridiomycota—a group of zoosporic fungi that comprises parasites of diverse host taxa, such as microphytes, plants, and amphibians. The presence of the same nephridiophagid species in two only distantly related cockroaches indicates that their host specificity is not as strict as generally assumed

Evolution of a qubit under the influence of a succession of unsharp measurements

We investigate the evolution of a single qubit subject to a continuous unitary dynamics and an additional interrupting influence which occurs periodically. One may imagine a dynamically evolving closed quantum system which becomes open at certain times. The interrupting influence is represented by an operation, which is assumed to equivalently describe a non-selective unsharp measurement. It may be decomposed into a positive operator, which in case of a measurement represents the pure measurement part, followed by an unitary back-action operator. Equations of motion for the state evolution are derived in the form of difference equations. It is shown that the 'free' Hamiltonian is completed by an averaged Hamiltonian, which goes back to the back-action. The positive operator specifies a decoherence rate and results in a decoherence term. The continuum limit to a master equation is performed. A sequence of unsharp measurements enabling a real time visualization of a quantum oscillation

The normalized state $\ket{\psi(t)}=c_1(t)\ket{1}+c_2(t)\ket{2}$ of a single two-level system performs oscillations under the influence of a resonant driving field. It is assumed that only one realization of this process is available. We show that it is possible to approximately visualize in real time the evolution of the system as far as it is given by $|c_2(t)|^2$. For this purpose we use a sequence of particular unsharp measurements separated in time. They are specified within the theory of generalized measurements in which observables are represented by positive operator valued measures (POVM). Identity, Empathy and Argument: Immigrants in Culture and Entertainment Journalism in the Scandinavian Press

Cultural and entertainment journalism deals with aesthetic experiences, advice on cultural consumption, as well as reflection and debate on ethical and moral humanistic issues. Does this sub-field of journalism systematically represent immigrants and integration differently than the other news and commentary articles? Comparing immigration discourse in a representative sample of six Scandinavian newspapers between 1970 and 2016 using content analysis we find that cultural journalism, while clearly reverbing with the dominant national issues at the time, did provide alternative perspectives. It not only brought up themes like racism, multiculturalism, national identity and religion more often, but was also more positive, more gender-balanced and more often gave a voice to immigrants than other news did. A closer qualitative reading further suggests a typology of ten main story-types, varying relatively little over time and across national borders. Cultural journalism in this case illustrates how the cultural public sphere can positively contribute to the debate of complicated issues in the public sphere by offering resources for identification, empathy and arguments for specific points of view.publishedVersio
