Rethinking the stylistic categories of Portuguese 19th Century Sculpture: The Work of António Teixeira Lopes
This article analyses the cooperation made over the seat of the Academic Centre
for the Christian Democracy (ACCD) from Coimbra, the stylistic options and its
connections to the organization’s ideas, and also the impact and meaning that this
new place assumed among the partners, the academy and the country, in general
terms. Following this goal, and starting by reviewing the evolution of ACCD in the
context of the national and international “catholic action”, we will explore: the
material conditions of the development and action of the Centre until its first residence
built for its purpose; the long process of edification and the agents involved;
and the inauguration and the reception of the building by catholic press. We will
finish by remarking the continuity of the Christian democrat project and how it
achieved to find in architecture a mean of expression and materialization
This paper addresses the socio-economic context that involved the shift in thinking in the transition from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance and profound discoveries that allowed the development of a new look at the world and its influence on the evolution of medical knowledge. In this table are presented and analyzed the work of the leading names of physicians and apothecaries-Portuguese Tomé Pires, Garcia de Orta, Christopher Costa and Amato Lusitano, - authors who had enormous influence on the evolution of medical-pharmaceutical in the 15th and 16th centuries, and the great impact of the his work in the following centuries. These authors are presented as notorious examples of the importance of rupture established between traditional knowledge and the development of a new form of knowledge to use the method of observation and experiment in the preparation of their works
interior do macrociclo corrólico, nomeadamente do 5,10,15-
tris(pentafluorofenil)corrol.
antraceno, tetraceno, nafto[2,3-a]pireno e pentaceno.
A actividade
recorrendo a espectrofotometria de Ultravioleta-Visível (UV-vis).This dissertation reports reactivity studies on the peripheral and internal core of
the corrole macrocycle, namely of 5,10,15-tris(pentafluorophenyl)corrole. In
these studies new synthetic routes for the preparation of new corroles were
established. Some of the corroles prepared have potential applications in
medicine.
In the first part, it was studied the behavior of corrole as 2ʌ component in DielsAlder
cycloaddition reactions with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, namely,
anthracene, tetracene, naphto[2,3-a]pyrene and pentacene. These reactions
were carried out under classical heating and microwave radiation. From these
studies it was concluded that with exception of naphto[2,3-a]pyrene, all the
other aromatic hydrocarbons react through Diels-Alder reactions. However,
only with pentacene the [4+4] cycloadduct was obtained. The previous results
led to a more detailed study concerning the stability of 5,10,15-
tris(pentafluorophenyl)corrole.
These studies were carried out under classical heating, in the presence of light
and in the presence of a radical promoter. From these studies, it was observed
that the dimer with a cyclo-octatetraene ring linked by positions C-2, C-2’ and
C-18, C-18’ and the asymmetric dimer linked by positions C-2 and C-3’ were
only obtained with classical heating. On the other hand the symmetric dimer
linked by positions C-3 and C-3’ was obtained in the presence of light or in the
presence of a radical promoter. The study of the mechanism of the
photodimerization led to the synthesis of a mono-halogenated corrole.
The behavior of 5,10,15-tris(pentafluorophenyl)corrole and 5,10,15-
tris(pentafluorophenyl)corrolategallium(III)(pyridine) in the presence of
azomethine ylides was also studied. These reactions provided the development
of new synthetic routes for the synthesis of new amino and ether derivatives of
corrole.
In the third part, complexation reactions between 5,10,15-
tris(pentafluorophenyl)corrole and several metallic salts, in the ionization
sources (Electrospray and LSIMS) of mass spectrometers were reported. The
results obtained proved that the metallocorroles formed in the ionization
sources were identical to the previously synthesized ones.
In the fourth part of this work new corrole-cyclodextrin conjugates were
synthesized through nucleophilic reactions. These new derivatives were tested
as photosensitizers in Photodynamic Therapy, on a cancer cellular line.
The structural analysis of the synthesized compounds was made by using
several spectroscopic techniques mainly NMR (1H, 13C and 19F, DEPT, COSY,
HSQC, HMBC and NOESY), mass spectrometry (LSIMS, ESI and MALDI) and
UV-Visible spectrophotometry
Between scientists and public: reframing public participation in science through bioethics
Discourses and techniques about the relationship between science and the public have remarkably developed in the past four decades. Science communication has become an important issue for the scientific governance. Public confidence in science, decision-making and support to democracy have changed the predominance of a top-down communication model, from scientists to public, to a more participative one – the Public Engagement with Science (PES). The Institute of Bioethics at Portuguese Catholic University, in Oporto, is doing research in the role of science in society issues and the aim of this paper is to discuss the relevance of Bioethics to improve PES. The bioethical issues seem to draw people‟s attention to certain scientific facts, confronting them with the consequences of science and improving their skills in deliberating on scientific issues. Moreover, ethics influences the way one understands public engagement, „scientific citizenship‟ or „science governance‟. The role of ethics is not to re-edit the old fashionable deficit perspective which usually focuses on the impact of science and technology from the perspective of non-experts. Ethics is a theoretical and practical reference for changing the science-making in the near future, and it makes us consider the public as playing a more important role than that of mere spectators with lack of scientific knowledge or with emotional concerns. The ethical reflection could redefine the non-experts place in the context of science, involving people with science, making them not simply aware of scientific issues but also involved in the process of decision-making. On the other hand, bioethics can also contribute to the participation of scientists in the ethical reflection that takes place outside the labs, broadening their role as citizen scientists.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
The study of happiness was dominated with the model of subjective well-being. With the advent of positive psychology the eudaimonic and hedonic models entered the field, but major surveys continue to use single-item measures of life satisfaction or happiness. We study the associations between life satisfaction and happiness, measured single-items with a graphic representation of a ladder and a thermometer, and three models of happiness: the subjective well-being, the eudaimonic and hedonic. The results showed that subjective well-being was the main predictor of life satisfaction and hedonic model also predicted a small amount of this variable. For happiness the predictors were the same but in reversed order, the main predictor was the hedonic model and a small variance was explained by subjective well-being. Contrary to our hypothesis the eudaimonic perspective of happiness was not a predictor in none of the models. These results underline the importance of the interaction between a cognitive or appraisal perspective and the hedonic perspectives for the study of happiness.
Upconverting nanoparticles as primary thermometers and power sensors
Luminescence thermometry is a spectroscopic technique for remote
temperature detection based on the thermal dependence of the
luminescence of phosphors, presenting numerous applications ranging from
biosciences to engineering. In this work, we use the Er3+ emission of the
NaGdF4/NaGdF4:Yb3+,Er3+/NaGdF4 upconverting nanoparticles upon 980 nm
laser excitation to determine simultaneously the absolute temperature and the
excitation power density. The Er3+ 2H11/2→4
I15/2 and 4
S3/2→4
I15/2 emission bands,
which are commonly used for thermometric purposes, overlap with the 2
H9/2
→4
I13/2 emission band, which can lead to erroneous temperature readout.
Applying the concept of luminescent primary thermometry to resolve the
overlapping Er3+ transitions, a dual nanosensor synchronously measuring the
temperature and the delivered laser pump power is successfully realized
holding promising applications in laser-supported thermal therapies.publishe
