Exploring the HRM-performance relationship: the role of creativity climate and strategy

    Get PDF
While an established stream of research evidence has demonstrated that human resource management (HRM) is positively related to organisational performance, explanations of this relationship remain underdeveloped, while performance has been considered in a narrow fashion. Exploring the relevant but often neglected impact of creativity climate, the purpose of this paper is to examine key processes (mediation and moderation) linking high-performance human resource practices with a broad range of organisational performance measures, including employee performance and HR performance. Design/methodology/approach Γ’ The paper draws on a People Management Survey of 169 HR managers from top performing firms in the Republic of Ireland. Findings Γ’ The findings provide general support for the role of creativity climate as a key mediator in the HRM-performance relationship. The impact of HPWS on performance is judged universal with little evidence of variation by strategic orientation. Practical implications Γ’ Sophisticated HRM is found to directly impact a range of organisational performance outcomes. Creativity climate provides an understanding of the mechanisms through which such impact takes effect. Organisations should develop a clear and consistent HR philosophy to realise HR, employee and organisational performance. Originality/value Γ’ The paper offers a more intricate understanding of the key factors shaping both the operation and impact of the HRM-performance relationship. Creativity climate offers an important vehicle to better understand how the HRM-performance relationship actually operates. The paper also highlights the potential of examining multiple organisational performance outcomes to offer more nuanced and considered insights.peer-reviewe

As magazines follow globalization trends of other media, research into how gender norms are also globalized within their texts is imperative. In November 2009, Esquire magazine launched its first issue of Esquire Middle East. The purpose of this study is to determine (1) the defining characteristics of the Esquire "Man at His Best," both in Esquire Middle East and the flagship publication and (2) what the differences imply about the magazines' respective readerships. These questions were researched by using discourse and constant comparative methodologies to analyze the editorial texts in the first three issues of Esquire Middle East and the corresponding three issues of the American Esquire. The archetype of the Middle Eastern Man at His Best particularly stressed the importance of cross-cultural appeal, physical prowess, being a "single actor," and having an interest in appearance and fashion. Interesting aspects of the American Man at His Best included him embracing the role of family man, expressing interest in the world of food and cooking and struggling to reaffirm his masculinity.Includes bibliographical reference

Novel implementation of experiential learning in health and wellbeing in a university setting

[EN] Healthy UCD is a health promotion initiative in University College Dublin (UCD) which aims to create a sustainable healthy campus for all members of the UCD community. In recent years, Healthy UCD has worked with staff from across the university to provide opportunities for experiential learning to UCD students in areas related to health and wellbeing. The initiative currently has involvement in three modules: 1) Practice Placement – a core MSc in Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics module where students plan and implement a university-wide Healthy Eating Week, 2) Event Management – a core module undertaken by second-year BSc Sport & Exercise Management students, and 3) Student Health & Wellbeing – an undergraduate elective module which challenges students to reflect on issues which affect their own health and wellbeing and that of those around them and then develop a student-focused Healthy UCD campaign. This paper will outline how experiential learning is implemented in these modules, how students are assessed, and the perceptions of students who complete these modules.Heffernan, M.; Fitzpatrick, P.; Bermingham, A.; Neville, R.; Dervan, N.; Corish, C.; Murrin, C.... Fishmeal supplementation during ovine pregnancy and lactation protects against maternal stress-induced programming of the offspring immune system

Background: Prenatally stressed offspring exhibit increased susceptibility to inflammatory disorders due to in utero programming. Research into the effects of n-3 PUFAs shows promising results for the treatment and prevention of these disorders. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether maternal fishmeal supplementation during pregnancy and lactation protects against programming of the offspring\u27s immune response following simulated maternal infection. Methods: In order to accomplish this, 53 ewes were fed a diet supplemented with fishmeal (FM; rich in n-3 PUFA) or soybean meal (SM; rich in n-6 PUFAs) from day 100 of gestation (gd 100) through lactation. On gd135, half the ewes from each dietary group were challenged with either 1.2 ΞΌg/kg Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide (LPS) endotoxin to simulate a bacterial infection, or saline as the control. At 4.5 months of age the offspring\u27s dermal immune response was assessed by cutaneous hypersensitivity testing with ovalbumin (OVA) and candida albicans (CAA) 21 days after sensitization. Skinfold measurements were taken and serum blood samples were also collected to assess the primary and secondary antibody immune response. Results: Offspring born to SM + LPS mothers had a significantly greater change in skinfold thickness in response to both antigens as well as a greater secondary antibody response to OVA compared to all treatments. Conclusions: Supplementation during pregnancy with FM appears to protect against adverse fetal programming that may occur during maternal infection and this may reduce the risk of atopic disease later in life
