    Application of High-precision Timing Systems to Distributed Survey Systems

    In any hydrographic survey system that consists of more than one computer, one of the most difficult integration problems is to ensure that all components maintain a coherent sense of time. Since virtually all modern survey systems are of this type, timekeeping and synchronized timestamping of data as it is created is of significant concern. This paper describes a method for resolving this problem based on the IEEE 1588 Precise Time Protocol (PTP) implemented by hardware devices, layered with some custom software called the Software Grandmaster (SWGM) algorithm. This combination of hardware and software maintains a coherent sense of time between multiple ethernet-connected computers, on the order of 100 ns (rms) in the best case, of the timebase established by the local GPS-receiver clock. We illustrate the performance of this techniques in a practical survey system using a Reson 7P sonar processor connected to a Reson 7125 Multibeam Echosounder (MBES), integrated with an Applanix POS/MV 320 V4 and a conventional data capture computer. Using the timing capabilities of the PTP hardware implementations, we show that the timepieces achieve mean (hardware based) synchronization and timestamping within 100-150 ns (rms), and that the data created at the Reson 7P without hardware timestamps has a latency variability of 28 µs (rms) due to software constraints within the capture system. This compares to 288 ms (rms) using Reson’s standard hybrid hardware/software solution, and 13.6 ms (rms) using a conventional single-oscillator timestamping model

With growing interest in how to support innovations that tackle the climate emergency, there is a need for evidence that can assist the private sector, civil society organizations and policymakers in finding more effective ways to encourage impact investing and other finance for early stage Cleantech SMEs. This research agenda will therefore contribute to sustainability transitions in key sectors and the development of a sustainable low carbon economy

    PTH improves titanium implant fixation more than pamidronate or renutrition in osteopenic rats chronically fed a low protein diet

    Summary : We evaluated the effects of parathyroid hormone (PTH), pamidronate, or renutrition on osseointegration of titanium implants in the proximal tibia of rats subject to prolonged low-protein diets. PTH improved mechanical fixation, microarchitecture, and increased pull-out strength. Pamidronate or renutrition had lesser effects. PTH can thus improve implant osseointegration in protein-malnourished rats. Introduction: Protein malnutrition impairs implant osseointegration in rats. PTH and pamidronate prevent deleterious effects of protein restriction introduced just prior to implantation. Whether these treatments improve osseointegration after chronic protein deprivation, i.e., in osteopenic bone at time of implantation, is unknown. We evaluated effects of PTH, pamidronate, or renutrition on resistance to pull-out of titanium rods implanted into the rat tibiae following isocaloric low-protein intake. Methods: Forty-one adult female rats received normal or isocaloric low-protein diets. Six weeks later, implants were surgically inserted into proximal tibiae. Following implantation, rats on low-protein diets were treated with PTH (1-34), pamidronate, saline vehicle, or normal protein diets, for another 8weeks. Tibiae were removed for micro-computerised tomographic morphometry and evaluation of pull-out strength. Results: Pull-out strength decreased in rats on isocaloric low-protein diets compared with normal protein group (−33.4%). PTH increased pull-out strength in low-protein group, even compared to controls from the normal protein group. PTH and pamidronate increased bone volume/tissue volume, bone-to-implant contact, and trabecular thickness, whilst trabecular separation was reduced, with a shift to more plate-like bone surrounding the implants. Conclusions: PTH reversed the deleterious effects of long-term protein undernutrition on mechanical fixation and bone microarchitecture and improved implant osseointegration more than pamidronate or renutrition, likely through changes to structure model inde

    The essential dynamical characteristics of a simple single spool turbojet engine were determined through simulation of low order system models on an analog computer. An accurate model was studied and system complexity was reduced through various linearizations and approximations. A derivation of a seventh order simplified simulation model is presented with a derivation of an even simpler third order model, and simulation results from each. The control problem studied is one of getting from zero fuel flow equilibrium to a high thrust equilibrium while taking into account surge margin and turbine inlet temperature constraints

    Many hydrographic and oceanographic agencies have moved or are moving towards gridded bathymetric products. However, there is no accepted format to allow these grids to be exchanged while maintaining data and metadata integrity. This paper describes the Open Navigation Surface (ONS) Project, which aims to fill this gap. The ONS Project is an open-source software project designed to provide a freely available, portable source-code library to encapsulate gridded bathymetric surfaces with associated uncertainty values. The data file format is called a Bathymetric Attributed Grid (BAG). The BAG is developed and maintained by the ONS Working Group (ONSWG), and the source code is available via the ONS websit

We show that clock synchronisation on the order of 100-150ns (rms) is readily achievable in a modern MBES-based survey system utilising an Ethernet-based time synchronisation mechanism and some custom timekeeping software.
