Size dependent exciton g-factor in self-assembled InAs/InP quantum dots
We have studied the size dependence of the exciton g-factor in self-assembled
InAs/InP quantum dots. Photoluminescence measurements on a large ensemble of
these dots indicate a multimodal height distribution. Cross-sectional Scanning
Tunneling Microscopy measurements have been performed and support the
interpretation of the macro photoluminescence spectra. More than 160 individual
quantum dots have systematically been investigated by analyzing single dot
magneto-luminescence between 1200nm and 1600 nm. We demonstrate a strong
dependence of the exciton g-factor on the height and diameter of the quantum
dots, which eventually gives rise to a sign change of the g-factor. The
observed correlation between exciton g-factor and the size of the dots is in
good agreement with calculations. Moreover, we find a size dependent anisotropy
splitting of the exciton emission in zero magnetic field.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figure
Endocrine Disorders as a Contributory Factor to Neoplasia in SJL/J Mice
We studied the endocrine status of SJL/J mice. Light and electron microscopy revealed that the adenohypophyses of both sexes became progressively infiltrated with an abnormal number of gonadotropinproducing cells that probably secreted large amounts of luteotropic hormone. The ovaries had numerous large corpora lutea even in animals over 1 year of age with reticulum cell neoplasms. The adrenal cortexes of female mice showed no regression of the reticular zone. In accordance with the anomalous condition of the adenohypophysis and ovary, females had abnormal estrous cycles, with prolonged diestrus and consequent reduction in fertility. In-gas-cell laser ionization spectroscopy in the vicinity of 100Sn: Magnetic moments and mean-square charge radii of N=50-54 Ag
In-gas-cell laser ionization spectroscopy studies on the neutron deficient
97-101Ag isotopes have been performed with the LISOL setup. Magnetic dipole
moments and mean-square charge radii have been determined for the first time
with the exception of 101Ag, which was found in good agreement with previous
experimental values. The reported results allow tentatively assigning the spin
of 97,99Ag to 9/2 and confirming the presence of an isomeric state in these two
isotopes, whose collapsed hyperfine structure suggests a spin of 1/2 . The
effect of the N=50 shell closure is not only manifested in the magnetic moments
but also in the evolution of the mean-square charge radii of the isotopes
investigated, in accordance with the spherical droplet model predictions
A Culturally and Linguistically Responsive Framework for Improving Academic and Postsecondary Outcomes of Students with Moderate or Severe Intellectual Disability
The needs of culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) students with moderate or severe intellectual disability (ID) are quite unique and complex. CLD students with moderate or severe ID face many of the same issues as their non-disabled CLD peers; however, due to the nature of their disability this may lead to even less access to the general curriculum, appropriate services, materials, and meaningful collaboration between families and educators. The purpose of this article is to provide a culturally responsive framework for facilitating academic instruction for CLD students with moderate or severe ID that also includes appropriate supports in an effort to increase access to postsecondary outcomes for this population. Suggestions for accessing the general curriculum and a discussion about increasing parental involvement and accessing appropriate adult agencies to further enhance these outcomes are provided
Low-energy Coulomb excitation of Fe and Mn following in-beam decay of Mn
Sub-barrier Coulomb-excitation was performed on a mixed beam of Mn and
Fe, following in-trap decay of Mn at REX-ISOLDE,
CERN. The trapping and charge breeding times were varied in order to alter the
composition of the beam, which was measured by means of an ionisation chamber
at the zero-angle position of the Miniball array. A new transition was observed
at 418~keV, which has been tentatively associated to a
transition. This fixes the relative
positions of the -decaying and states in Mn for
the first time. Population of the state was observed in Fe
and the cross-section determined by normalisation to the Ag target
excitation, confirming the value measured in recoil-distance lifetime

Shape Isomerism at N = 40: Discovery of a Proton Intruder in 67Co
The nuclear structure of 67Co has been investigated through 67Fe beta-decay.
The 67Fe isotopes were produced at the LISOL facility in proton-induced fission
of 238U and selected using resonant laser ionization combined with mass
separation. The application of a new correlation technique unambiguously
revealed a 496(33) ms isomeric state in 67Co at an unexpected low energy of 492
keV. A 67Co level scheme has been deduced. Proposed spin and parities suggest a
spherical (7/2-) 67Co ground state and a deformed first excited (1/2-) state at
492 keV, interpreted as a proton 1p-2h prolate intruder state.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, preprint submitted to Physical Review Letter
The acquisition of Sign Language: The impact of phonetic complexity on phonology
Research into the effect of phonetic complexity on phonological acquisition has a long history in spoken languages. This paper considers the effect of phonetics on phonological development in a signed language. We report on an experiment in which nonword-repetition methodology was adapted so as to examine in a systematic way how phonetic complexity in two phonological parameters of signed languages — handshape and movement — affects the perception and articulation of signs. Ninety-one Deaf children aged 3–11 acquiring British Sign Language (BSL) and 46 hearing nonsigners aged 6–11 repeated a set of 40 nonsense signs. For Deaf children, repetition accuracy improved with age, correlated with wider BSL abilities, and was lowest for signs that were phonetically complex. Repetition accuracy was correlated with fine motor skills for the youngest children. Despite their lower repetition accuracy, the hearing group were similarly affected by phonetic complexity, suggesting that common visual and motoric factors are at play when processing linguistic information in the visuo-gestural modality
Cortisol interferes with the estradiol-induced surge of lutenizing hormone in the ewe
Two experiments were conducted to test the hypothesis that cortisol interferes with the positive feedback action of estradiol that induces the luteinizing hormone (LH) surge. Ovariectomized sheep were treated sequentially with progesterone and estradiol to create artificial estrous cycles. Cortisol or vehicle (saline) was infused from 2 h before the estradiol stimulus through the time of the anticipated LH surge in the artificial follicular phase of two successive cycles. The plasma cortisol increment produced by infusion was ∼1.5 times greater than maximal concentrations seen during infusion of endotoxin, which is a model of immune/inflammatory stress. In experiment 1, half of the ewes received vehicle in the first cycle and cortisol in the second; the others were treated in reverse order. All ewes responded with an LH surge. Cortisol delayed the LH surge and reduced its amplitude, but both effects were observed only in the second cycle. Experiment 2 was modified to provide better control for a cycle effect. Four treatment sequences were tested (cycle 1-cycle 2): vehicle-vehicle, cortisol-cortisol, vehicle-cortisol, cortisol-vehicle. Again, cortisol delayed but did not block the LH surge, and this delay occurred in both cycles. Thus, an elevation in plasma cortisol can interfere with the positive feedback action of estradiol by delaying and attenuating the LH surge.<br /
Coulomb excitation of 73Ga
The B(E2; Ii -> If) values for transitions in 71Ga and 73Ga were deduced from
a Coulomb excitation experiment at the safe energy of 2.95 MeV/nucleon using
post-accelerated beams of 71,73Ga at the REX-ISOLDE on-line isotope mass
separator facility. The emitted gamma rays were detected by the
MINIBALL-detector array and B(E2; Ii->If) values were obtained from the yields
normalized to the known strength of the 2+ -> 0+ transition in the 120Sn
target. The comparison of these new results with the data of less neutron-rich
gallium isotopes shows a shift of the E2 collectivity towards lower excitation
energy when adding neutrons beyond N = 40. This supports conclusions from
previous studies of the gallium isotopes which indicated a structural change in
this isotopical chain between N = 40 and N = 42. Combined with recent
measurements from collinear laser spectroscopy showing a 1/2- spin and parity
for the ground state, the extracted results revealed evidence for a 1/2-; 3/2-
doublet near the ground state in 73 31Ga42 differing by at most 0.8 keV in
energy
