    Energy Saving Potential of Traffic-Regulated Street Lighting

    Some municipalities switch off street lights for several hours at night to save energy and reduce operating costs as a consequence of soaring electricity prices in Europe. Complete darkness in the streets raises public concern about safety and security. The current street lighting standard EN 13201 enables the road luminance to be reduced in parallel with diminishing traffic volume offering a viable tradeoff between energy saving and road safety. This paper presents a methodology to estimate the energy-saving potential of traffic-regulated street lighting based on traffic counting data. By analyzing traffic volume and composition collected from an urban street over the one-year period, we found that traffic sensor-regulated street lighting can deliver up to 55% reduction in electricity costs while maintaining road luminance in line with the recommendations of EN 13201-2. In the presented case, the daily traffic volume profiles were remarkably stable following either a workday or a holiday pattern. Statistical analysis showed that 45% energy saving could be achieved by the pre-programmed dimming schedule of the luminaires while remaining compliant with the standard. The effect of daylight-saving time on the energy consumption of adaptive street lighting was also analyzed

    Reconstruction of Hadronization Stage in Pb+Pb Collisions at 158A GeV/c

    Recent data on hadron multiplicities in central Pb+Pb collisions at 158A GeV/c at mid-rapidity are analyzed within the concept of chemical freeze-out. A non-uniformity of the baryon chemical potential along the beam axis is taken into account. An approximate analytical solution of the hydrodynamic equations for a chemically frozen Boltzmann-like gas is found. The Cauchy conditions for hydrodynamic evolution of the hadron resonance gas are fixed at the thermal freeze-out hypersurface from analysis of one-particle momentum spectra and HBT correlations. The proper time of chemical freeze-out and physical conditions at the hadronization stage, such as energy density and averaged transverse velocity, are found.Comment: 21 pages including 3 figures, RevTex, semi-relativistic solution of hydrodynamics was used, submitted to Nucl.     Baryon phase-space density in heavy-ion collisions

    The baryon phase-space density at mid-rapidity from central heavy-ion collisions is estimated from proton spectra with interferometry and deuteron coalescence measurements. It is found that the mid-rapidity phase-space density of baryons is significantly lower at the SPS than the AGS, while those of total particles (pion + baryon) are comparable. Thermal and chemical equilibrium model calculations tend to over-estimate the phase-space densities at both energies.Comment: 5 pages, 2 tables, no figure. RevTeX style.     Evidence of early multi-strange hadron freeze-out in high energy nuclear collisions

    Recently reported transverse momentum distributions of strange hadrons produced in Pb(158AGeV) on Pb collisions and corresponding results from the relativistic quantum molecular dynamics (RQMD) approach are examined. We argue that the experimental observations favor a scenario in which multi-strange hadrons are formed and decouple from the system rather early at large energy densities (around 1 GeV/fm3^3). The systematics of the strange and non-strange particle spectra indicate that the observed transverse flow develops mainly in the late hadronic stages of these reactions.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Incidence of and risk factors for vaginal cuff dehiscence following total laparoscopic hysterectomy: a monocentric hospital analysis

    Purpose Vaginal cuff dehiscence (VCD) is one of the major surgical complications following hysterectomy with data on incidence rates varying largely and studies assessing risk factors being sparse with contradictive results. The aim of this study was to assess the incidence rate of and risk factors for VCD in a homogenous cohort of women treated for benign uterine pathologies via total laparoscopic hysterectomy (TLH) with standardized follow-up. Methods All patients undergoing TLH at the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Saarland University Hospital between November 2010 and February 2019 were retrospectively identified from a prospectively maintained service database. Results VCD occurred in 18 (2.9%) of 617 patients included. In univariate and multivariate analyses, a lower level of surgeon laparoscopic expertise (odds ratio 3.19, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.0–9.38; p = 0.03) and lower weight of removed uterus (odds ratio 0.99, 95% CI 0.98–0.99; p = 0.02) were associated positively with the risk of VCD. Conclusion In this homogenous cohort undergoing TLH, laparoscopic expertise and uterine weight influenced the risk of postoperative VCD. These findings might help to further reduce the rate of this complication
