Inflation driven by 3-form fields

Tese de mestrado em Física, apresentada à Universidade de Lisboa, através da Faculdade de Ciências, 2015Inflação primordial foi um curto período de expansão acelerada no universo primitivo (10 -36 a 10 -33s). É uma teoria que foi introduzida por Alan Guth com o objectivo de dar resposta a alguns problemas do modelo standard da Cosmologia. Nesta tese estudo a inflação a partir de campos tensoriais, em particular, campos 3-forma. Começarei por lembrar ao leitor alguns conceitos básicos e necessários de cálculo tensorial. Apresento resumidamente o modelo padrão da cosmologia e explico o que é a inflação primordial, porque é necessária e como é maioritariamente estudada na literatura a partir de um campo escalar a interagir com o seu potencial. Escrevo os modelos standard para uma e para múltiplas 3-formas, já estudadas na literatura. Apresento um modelo para inflação conduzida por dois campos 3-forma acopladas onde calculo as equações de evolução, equações do movimento, tensor energia momento e alguns constrangimentos. Introduzindo quatro variáveis adimensionais úteis, reescrevo as equações do movimentos para os campos, com estas novas variáveis, sob a forma de um sistema de equações diferenciais de primeira ordem o qual resolvo numericamente. Calculo os parâmetros de slow roll e impondo as condições para termos inflação (condições de slow roll) consigo obter as condições iniciais para o sistema dinâmico. Estudo a dinâmica, os pontos críticos e estabilidade destes pontos para dois tipos de potenciais, quadrático e exponencial. Foco-me no papel do acoplamento em comparação com o caso desacoplado, já estudado na literatura, mostrando a sua influência na modificação das equações e na dinâmica inacionária. Em particular, mostro que um acoplamento da ordem de ~ 10 -4 tem a influência de estender a duração da inflação entre 20 a 30 e-folds. Proponho uma forma geral para o Lagrangiano de N campos 3-forma acoplados introduzindo um novo termo que contém os acoplamentos onde imponho algumas restrições de forma a não termos repetições nos potenciais e mostro as respectivas equações do movimento. Familiarizo o leitor com o modelo extra-dimensional Randall-Sundrum II, proposto por Lisa Randall e Raman Sundrum em 1999, onde o nosso universo está confinado a uma 3-brane de 4 dimensões embebido numa quinta dimensão (bulk) cuja geometria é Anti de Sitter. Apresento um modelo inacionário conduzido por um campo 3-forma, confinado à brana, onde deduzo as equações do movimento e respectivos constrangimentos. Uma vez mais, introduzo variáveis adimensionais e reescrevo as equações do movimento sob a forma de um sistema dinâmico. Impondo as condições de slow roll para inacção, estudo a dinâmica, os pontos críticos do sistema e sua estabilidade para diferentes formas do potencial. Em particular foco-me na influência da quinta dimensão em comparação com o caso padrão a quatro dimensões. Calculo a evolução das perturbações escalares e tensoriais perturbando a métrica e a 3-forma. Usando a forma da velocidade do som, deduzo os parâmetros cosmológicos, mais especificamente, a razão entre a amplitudes das perturbações tensorias-escalares e os índices espectrais ns e nT . Por fim comparo as previsões cosmológicas do modelo considerado com os recentes resultados do satélite Planck e observo como são sensíveis à quinta dimensão quando se altera o valor da tensão da brana. Encontro um limite inferior para a tensão da brana para um caso particular do potencial.Throughout this thesis I study primordial inflation, which was a period of accelerated expansion in the early universe, through models of tensorial fields, more specifically 3-form fields. I explore the dynamics of two coupled 3-form fields in the standard four dimensional case and compare it to the uncoupled model already addressed in the literature. I focus on the role of the coupling, in contrast with the uncoupled case, and see how it affects inflationary scenarios for two different forms of the potential. I follow to deduce the evolution equations and the equations of motion which I numerically solve. I propose a general form for the Lagrangian of N coupled 3-form fields and provide the respective equations of motion. I present a single 3-form field model in a five dimensional braneworld, called the Randall-Sundrum II model, in which our universe in confined to a four dimensional 3-brane embedded in a five dimensional AdS bulk. The braneworld effects modify the evolution equations so I focus on the main differences from the five dimensional and the standard four dimensional case. Once again, I calculate the equations of motion and follow to rewrite these in the form of a system of first order differential equations which I numerically solve. I present inflationary solutions for different forms of the potential and study the dynamics, the critical points and their stability, and show the influence of the fifth dimension on these quantities. I follow to calculate the speed of sound for this model and present the evolution of scalar and tensorial perturbations by perturbing the 3-form and the metric. Finally, by calculating the cosmological parameters, tensor to scalar ratio and spectral index, I show how my inflationary setting fits the recent Planck data and see how is it sensible to the value of the brane tension where in a particular case I find a lower bond for it

An exotic Universe : from dark energy to wormholes

This thesis deals with extensions of General Relativity and their application to Cosmology and Gravitation. The introduction and main motivations of this essay can be found on Chapter 1. The second chapter proposes a dark energy model driven by a scalar field kinetically coupled to matter. The dynamics of the system are analysed through dynamical systems techniques. The background is evolved and the solutions are meticulously studied, focusing on the influence of the coupling on the cosmological parameters. Through the Planck constraints, it is derived anupper bound on the coupling parameter. Chapter three is devoted to the analysis of a conformally coupled quintessence model in which the background expansion is set to mimic a CDM evolution. Both the background and linear perturbations are analysed. The growth of structures is tested against redshift space distortions data. The spherical collapse and cluster number counts are explored, and we shed some light on the possibility to distinguish between theoretical models with regard to two surveys. An alternative formulation of General Relativity, where gravity is mediated by nonmetricity, on a flat and torsion free spacetime is exposed on the fourth Chapter. The background dynamics are set to follow the same evolution as in the standard model of Cosmology. The linear matter perturbations are evolved and the f 8 parameter is tested against large scale observations in the late Universe. Chapter five introduces a 3-form field to the Einstein-Hilbert action in the context of gravitation. Specifically, it is found wormhole solutions where the ordinary matter fields are able to coexist throughout spacetime without violating the classical energy conditions. On such scenario, the 3-form field is responsible for holding the throat of the wormhole open. On Chapter six the gravitational Lagrangian for modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity is reconstructed, such that the Friedmann equation of a bouncing Universe is recovered

Acceleration patterns in the perception of biological motion

A lot of natural stimuli are characterized by acceleration patterns. However, available studies are inconclusive about the importance of these patterns on visual perception. Empirical findings seems to both sustain that acceleration patterns might have, or might have not, a significant role on visual perception [Runeson, 1974 Psychological Research 37 3-23; McIntyre et al, 2001 Nature Neuroscience 4(7) 693-694]. In a recent study Chang and Troje [2009 Journal of Vision 9(1) 19-17] stressed the role of acceleration patterns for the perception of biological motion. Nevertheless, we have a limited understanding about the implications of these patterns for translational stimuli. The present study aimed to investigate how acceleration patterns influence the perception of biological translational motion. We manipulated the velocity of the translational component (maintaining spatial characteristics). This allowed us to create a continuum of stimuli that ranged from natural motion to constant velocity. When two stimuli are presented simultaneously participants are asked to choose which appears more natural. Data shows that subjects choose the stimulus closest to the natural motion—biological motion. Results reveal a great accuracy in detecting the stimulus closest to biological motion, which suggests that acceleration patterns are important in the perception of translational biological motion.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT

Culpa grave e culpa leve no direito penal : um critério objetivo-subjetivo do desvalor de ação

Defesa : Curitiba, 06/07/2023Inclui referênciasResumo: Este trabalho faz um incurso na filosofia da linguagem e na gramática profunda da dogmática penal para investigar os usos da palavra "culpa" no processo de atribuição de responsabilidade criminal por violação de um dever objetivo-subjetivo de cuidado. Na primeira parte da pesquisa, adentra-se na dogmática jurídico-penal para examinar como os principais sistemas teóricos (causalismo, finalismo, funcionalismos e ação social) trabalham a imputação subjetiva por delito culposo e suas possíveis interrelações com a concepção significativa de Vives Antón; ainda, dá-se especial destaque à reforma legislativa do direito penal espanhol, que adotou uma classificação quantitativa da culpa em graus (culpa grave e culpa menos grave), tornando penalmente irrelevante a culpa leve; mais adiante, faz-se um estudo comparado com o sistema de imputação subjetiva do Common Law, em suas diferentes fases metodológicas (antes e depois do Model Penal Code), com ênfase na noção de "mens rea" e de graus de negligência, ressaltando-se suas afinidades e assimetrias com o direito continental. No segundo capítulo, abordam-se as concepções agostiniana e cartesiana de linguagem, bem como os impactos do dualismo corpo-mente na interpretação do direito penal; ato contínuo, dialoga-se com a ação comunicativa de Jürgen Habermas e suas pretensões de validade para um discurso orientado ao entendimento; em seguida, expõe-se a filosofia da linguagem de Ludwig Wittgenstein e os conceitos-chave para a compreensão do seu giro linguístico, como as críticas à ideia de linguagem privada e as noções de forma de vida, seguir regras, jogos de linguagem, semelhanças de família e gramática, para demonstrar a impraticabilidade de uma classificação ontológica entre culpa consciente e culpa inconsciente. Por último, no terceiro capítulo, maximizando a força normativa do princípio da intervenção mínima e coerente com um modelo de Estado Social e Democrático de Direito, propõe-se que o processo de atribuição de responsabilidade por crime culposo há de ficar adstrito a jogos de linguagem que transmitam o sentido de grosseira violação do dever objetivo-subjetivo de cuidado.Abstract: This dissertation delves into the philosophy of language and the depth grammar of dogmatics of criminal law in order to investigate the uses of the word "negligence" when attributing criminal liability in the violation of an objective-subjective duty of care. In the first part of the study, we look into criminal law dogmatics to examine how the main theoretical systems (causalism, finalism, teleological and radical functionalism, social action) deals with a subjective charge for negligent crime and their possible link with the meaningful conception by Vives Anton to which the legislative reform of Spanish criminal law played a crucial role. Such reform ranked negligence qualitatively as serious or less serious negligence and made ordinary negligence irrelevant in criminal law. Additionally, a comparison among the different methodological phases of the Common Law subjective imputation system before and after the Model Penal Code is made by underlying the notion of "mens rea" and levels of negligence, as well as its affinities and asymmetries with the Civil Law model. In the second part, the development of the Augustinian and Cartesian conceptions of language is discussed, as well as the impacts of the body/mind dichotomy in the interpretation of criminal law. Henceforth, such action strikes a chord with Habermas' communicative action and its validity claims for an understanding-oriented discourse. The second phase of Wittgenstein's philosophy of language is then described, along with its key concepts in order to understand his linguistic turn. The idea of private language and the notions of form of life, rule-following, language games, family resemblance and grammar were criticized to demonstrate the unfeasibility of an ontological classification between conscious and unconscious negligence. Finally, in the last chapter, by emphasizing the normative force of the principle of minimum intervention and consistent with a model of Social and Democratic State of Law, we propose that the attribution of criminal liability for negligence should be restricted to language games that convey the sense of gross violation of the objective-subjective duty of care

Dogmática penal do perigo e o perigo da dogmática penal : dois mirantes sobre o excesso de punição nos crimes patrimoniais

Na ordem capitalista, o direito penal foi direcionado para defender um pretenso direito natural à propriedade da burguesia e, não por acaso, ante um universo magmático de delitos previstos no Código Penal e na legislação penal extravagante, os que atentam contra o patrimônio correspondem à metade da população carcerária brasileira. Essa seletividade nodal das agências de criminalização tem sido ignorada pela dogmática penal tradicional, que brada uma isonomia fictícia e um eficientismo da punição que não encontra qualquer amparo empírico-científico. Mas essa desmaterialização do direito, cujo ápice é a teoria do inimigo de Günther Jakobs, só pode ser compreendida se antes forem examinados os alicerces filosóficos e sociológicos sobre os quais ela se desenvolveu moderna e contemporaneamente, tarefa esta a que nos propomos no primeiro capítulo. A noção de mirante epistemológico é aprofundada no capítulo seguinte, onde contextualizamos a relevância do materialismo científico e da luta de classes a fim de alcançar uma percepção mais alta e ampla acerca do excesso de punição dos crimes patrimoniais para, então, demonstrar as debilidades incontornáveis do positivismo jurídico-penal e alternativas antipunitivas desde um horizonte crítico contradogmático. In the capitalist order, criminal law was directed to defend an alleged natural right to property of bourgeoisie, and not by chance, in view of a magmatic universe of offenses provided in the Penal Code and extravagant criminal law, that threaten the heritage correspond to half of the Brazilian prison population. This nodal selectivity of criminalization agencies has been ignored by traditional criminal dogmatic, hailing a fictitious equality and efficientism punishment which there is no empirical and scientific support. But this dematerialization of law whose apex is the theory of the enemy of Günther Jakobs, can only be understood if they are examined before the philosophical and sociological foundations on which it developed modern and simultaneously, a task we set ourselves in the first chapter. The notion of epistemological viewpoint is detailed in the next chapter, where we contextualize the relevance of scientific materialism and the class struggle in order to achieve a higher and broader perception of excessive punishment of crimes against property to then demonstrate the conceptual weaknesses of criminal legal positivism and anti punitive alternatives from a critical horizon against dogmatic. End-to-End Software Construction using ChatGPT: An Experience Report

In this paper, we explore the application of Large Language Models (LLMs) in the particular context of end-to-end software construction, i.e., in contexts where software developers have a set of requirements and have to design, implement, test, and validate a new software system. Particularly, we report an experiment where we asked three software developers to use ChatGPT to fully implement a Web-based application using mainstream software architectures and technologies. After that, we compare the apps produced by ChatGPT with a reference implementation that we manually implemented for our research. As a result, we document four categories of prompts that can be used by developers in similar contexts, including initialization prompts, feature requests, bug-fixing, and layout prompts. Additionally, we discuss the advantages and disadvantages of two prompt construction approaches: top-down (where we start with a high-level description of the target software, typically in the form of user stories) and bottom-up (where we request the construction of the system feature by feature)

Leishmaniose Visceral – Sistematização da Assistência de Enfermagem/Visceral Leishmaniasis - Nursing Care System

Objetivo: conhecer o perfil epidemiológico e sócio-demográfico dos portadores desta patologia internados em hospital geral de referência no período de agosto de 2009 a agosto de 2010. Método: Estudo prospectivo, transversal, exploratório, descritivo, com abordagem qualitativa, utilizando o método estudo de caso conforme Robert K. Yin. Resultados: foram realizadas 22 entrevistas semi-estruturadas, que forneceram subsídios para reflexão da prática assistencial desenvolvidas pelos enfermeiros aos portadores desta patologia, a fim de detectar as necessidades biopsicossociais afetadas e aplicar ações dependentes, independentes. Conclusão: A ampla distribuição da doença na área urbana se mostra um problema de saúde pública sendo necessário desenvolver ações educativas e preventivas por meio da participação da sociedade civil organizada e poder público qualificando os profissionais da saúde em todos os níveis de atenção para diagnóstico precoce e continuidade do caso conforme preconizado no PCLV

Uso de azul tripano a 0,025% para corar a cápsula anterior em catarata sem reflexo

Purpose: To describe the use of anterior capsule staining in cataracts without red reflex using a 0.025% trypan blue solution. Methods: Six eyes of 6 patients with cataracts without red reflex were submitted to phacoemulsification using a direct injection of 0.2 to 0.5 ml of 0.025% trypan blue in the anterior chamber previous to viscoelastic injection. All patients had an ophthalmologic examination prior to surgery, as well as pre and postoperative corneal endothelial cell count. Results: In all cases the capsule became stained with a faint blue color that enabled an adequate visibility of the flap during the continuous curvilinear anterior capsulotomy (CCC). There were no intra-or postoperative complications. The endothelial cell loss varied between 1.8% and 26.6% (mean 12.8%). Conclusion: Staining the anterior capsule with 0.025% trypan blue solution allows a good visibility of the capsular flap and facilitates the confection of CCC in cataracts without red reflex.Objetivo: Relatar o uso de uma solução de azul tripano a 0,025% para corar a cápsula anterior em cataratas sem reflexo. Métodos: Seis olhos de 6 pacientes portadores de catarata sem reflexo foram submetidos à facoemulsificação com injeção direta de azul tripano a 0,025% na câmara anterior previamente à injeção de solução viscoelástica. Todos os pacientes tiveram exame oftalmológico prévio à cirurgia incluindo contagem de células endoteliais no pré-operatório e no 40º dia pós-operatório. Resultados: Em todos os casos a cápsula anterior adquiriu uma tonalidade azul clara que permitiu uma boa visibilidade e controle da progressão durante a capsulotomia curvilínea contínua (CCC). Não houve complicação intra ou pós-operatória. A perda endotelial variou entre 1,8% e 26,6% (média 12,8%).
