Rehabilitation and renewal of mediterranean structures: the utopic landscape of Algarve
One of the remarkable features of Mediterranean landscapes is the terraced land frame, usually supported by dry stone walling. The terraces, property division walls, pathways and traditional paths design a network compartmentalization that defines landscape identity. The informational content, aesthetic quality, ecological and cultural values allowed by this articulated construction are particularly important at coastal zones with intense human impact. On the Algarve, the hills displayed by such structures form the background scenario of an urban-touristic system. This paper aims to interrelate ecological, aesthetic, symbolic, socio-economic and political aspects that influence the spatial distribution and image of the terraces. The values that local people may assign to their landscapes will determine the acknowledgement of the structural elements under analysis, but the role of tourists must be seriously take into account. Beyond nostalgic solutions, one must prospect the future of the dry stone walling structure into the diversity of possible solutions for a sustainable landscape development, which enhances the living part of an inseparable unit that includes the densest urbanized areas with less ecological functions. We call such unit the urban-touristic region of Algarve and, therefore, we try to use landscape as an instrument of knowledge and acknowledgement of regional spaces
A importância da evidência
Evidence-based Medicine (EBM) has become a major source of medical knowledge. It handles complexities of virtually every method or technique used in research. The knowledge on how the EBM researcher retrieves information, judges for relevance and analyzes derived data is invaluable for the skillful reader of medical scientific reports
Materiais de isolamento térmico de edifícios. Para além da energia operacional
The use of thermal insulation materials for the achievement of energy efficient
buildings intended, in most cases, the fulfilment of the required heating and cooling needs of
the operational phase. The main goal of this paper is â by using exploratory methodology, namely
literature review â identify more sustainable insulating materials and, concomitantly, exposing
the paradoxical effect of other insulation materials with high Global Warming Potential (GWP)
highlighting the role of the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Ecodesign and Environmental Product
Declaration (EPD) tools for the framing, comparison and selection of materials. As a main
conclusion, it is noticed the lack of environmental information from the producers which,
together with acquisition prices that do not internalize Life Cycle Costs (LCC), has led to the use
of insulation materials with high carbon footprint and to the "isolation paradox" as well.
BAYESIAN HYPOTHESIS TEST: Using Surface Integrals to Distribute Prior Information Among the Hypotheses
A solution to the problem of transferring the prior preferences about the paraIlleters of interest to the spaces defined by the hypotheses in test is proposed. We make use of surface (line) integrals to obtain tlus solution
Sequential Allocation to Balance Prognostic Factors in a Psychiatric Clinical Trial
OBJECTIVE: This paper aims to describe and discuss a minimization procedure specifically designed for a clinical trial that evaluates treatment efficacy for OCD patients. METHOD: Aitchison's compositional distance was used to calculate vectors for each possibility of allocation in a covariate adaptive method. Two different procedures were designed to allocate patients in small blocks or sequentially one-by-one. RESULTS: We present partial results of this allocation procedure as well as simulated data. In the clinical trial for which this procedure was developed, successful balancing between treatment arms was achieved. Separately, in an exploratory analysis, we found that if the arrival order of patients was altered, most patients were allocated to a different treatment arm than their original assignment. CONCLUSION: Our results show that the random arrival order of patients determine different assignments and therefore maintains the unpredictability of the allocation method. We conclude that our proposed procedure allows for the use of a large number of prognostic factors in a given allocation decision. Our method seems adequate for the design of the psychiatric trials used as models. Trial registrations are available at clinicaltrials.gov NCT00466609 and NCT00680602
As
Building the landscape. Rehabilitation and renewal of traditional mediterranean structures
One of the main features of Mediterranean landscapes, particularly in limestone
areas, is the terraced land frame, usually supported by dry stone walls. In addition to the
scenic aspects and landscape identity, network compartmentalization established by
terraces, property division walls, pathways and traditional paths, shapes ecological
corridors that frame the different human activities. It is a structure whose conservation is
particularly important in areas of intense human impact, or rapid transformation, such as the
urban-tourist spaces of the Algarve, where the hills displayed by such structures form the
background scenario. In order to put in value their importance for landscape conservation and
evolution, this presentation will focus on the interrelated ecological, aesthetic, symbolic, socioeconomic
and political aspects that influence the spatial distribution and image of the terraces.
Of course, the values that local people can assign to their landscapes will be determinant, but
specially at the Algarve, the role of tourists as outsiders must be seriously take into account.
We then argue that the future of the dry stone walls structure must be prospected into the
diversity of possible solutions about landscape development as the living part of a whole unit
that includes the densest urbanized areas with less ecological functions. We call such unit the
urban-touristic region of Algarve, inspired on two utopic references: the ‘urban regions’ and
the ‘Agroplia’. It means that we try to use landscape as an instrument of knowledge and
acknowledgement –democratic governance– of regional spaces.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
