Evidence for a 304-day Orbital Period for GX 1+4

In this paper we report strong evidence for a ~304-day periodicity in the spin history of the accretion-powered pulsar GX 1+4 that is very likely to be a signature of the orbital period of the system. Using BATSE public-domain data, we show a highly-significant periodic modulation of the pulsar frequency from 1991 to date which is in excellent agreement with the ephemeris proposed by Cutler, Dennis & Dolan in 1986, which were based on a few events of enhanced spin-up that occurred during the pulsar's spin-up era in the 1970s. Our results indicate that the orbital period of GX 1+4 is 303.8+-1.1 days, making it by far the widest low-mass X-ray binary system known. A likely scenario for this system is an elliptical orbit in which the neutron star decreases its spin-down rate (or even exhibits a momentary spin-up behavior) at periastron passages due to the higher torque exerted by the accretion disk onto the magnetosphere of the neutron star.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, 1 single PS file, to appear in "Proceedings of the 5th Compton Symposium on Gamma-Ray Astrophysics", AI

Prediction of the mechanical behavior of the Oporto granite using data mining techniques

The determination of mechanical properties of granitic rocks has a great importance to solve many engineering problems. Tunnelling, mining and excavations are some examples of these problems. The purpose of this paper is to apply Data Mining (DM) techniques such as multiple regressions (MR), artificial neural networks (ANN) and support vector machines (SVM), to predict the uniaxial compressive strength and the deformation modulus of the Oporto granite. This rock is a light grey, two-mica, medium-grained, hypidiomorphic granite and is located in Oporto (Portugal) and surrounding areas. Begonha (1997) and Begonha et al. (2002) studied this granite in terms of chemical, mineralogical, physical and mechanical properties. Among other things, like the weathering features, those authors applied correlation analysis to investigate the relationships between two properties either physical or mechanical or physical and mechanical. This study took the data published by those authors to build a database containing 55 rock sample records. Each record contains the free porosity (N48), the dry bulk density (d), the ultrasonic velocity (v), the uniaxial compressive strength (σc) and the modulus of elasticity (E). It was concluded that all the models obtained from DM techniques have good performances. Nevertheless, the best forecasting capacity was obtained with the SVM model with N48 and v as input parameters.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT

Comunicação e militância no contexto étnico-racial brasileiro

Este trabalho é um Resumo Expandido ao IV Simpósio Internacional de Cultura e Comunicação na América Latina, tendo como foco alguns apontamentos sobre a participação da militância negra na I CONFECOM (Conferência Nacional da Comunicação), realizada entre os dias 14 e 17 de dezembro de 2009, em Brasília. Mostraremos como se deram as articulações da sociedade civil e dos movimentos sociais para impulsionar o avanço dessa pauta junto aos governos não só para, viabilizar o evento, mas uma posterior implementação das resoluções ali aprovadas. Como método de análise, consultamos os sítios das entidades sociais que compuseram a Comissão Organizadora Nacional, os documentos de opinião política das organizações não governamentais e consulta às 672 propostas aprovadas na Plenária Final do evento.   É possível inferir que o País avançou pouco desde a realização desta CONFECOM, pois nosso contexto comunicativo mantém-se hermético, concentrado e exclusivo nas mãos de famílias empresariais.This research study is an expanded summary to the IV International Symposium on Culture and Communication in Latin America, focusing on some notes on the participation of black militancy in I CONFECOM (National Communication Conference) held between 14 and 17 December 2009, in Brasilia.
