A case study and critical assessment in calculating power usage effectiveness for a data centre
Metrics commonly used to assess the energy efficiency of data centres are analysed through performing and critiquing a case study calculation of energy efficiency. Specifically, the metric Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), which has become a de facto standard within the data centre industry, will be assessed. This is achieved by using open source specifications for a data centre in Prineville, Oregon, USA provided by the Open Compute Project launched by the social networking company Facebook. The usefulness of the PUE metric to the IT industry is critically assessed and it is found that whilst it is important for encouraging lower energy consumption in data centres, it does not represent an unambiguous measure of energy efficiency
Inconsistent boundaries

The existence of boundaries, as parts of everyday objects, is basic to any such theory; but in classical mereotopology, there is a problem: if boundaries exist, then either distinct entities cannot be in contact, or else space is not topologically connected (Varzi in Noûs 31:26–58, 1997). In this paper we urge that this problem can be met with a paraconsistent mereotopology, and sketch the details of one such approach. The resulting theory focuses attention on the role of empty parts, in delivering a balanced and bounded metaphysics of naive space.PostprintPeer reviewe
A de Sitter Hoedown
Rotating black holes in de Sitter space are known to have interesting limits
where the temperatures of the black hole and cosmological horizon are equal. We
give a complete description of the thermal phase structure of all allowed
rotating black hole configurations. Only one configuration, the rotating Nariai
limit, has the black hole and cosmological horizons both in thermal and
rotational equilibrium, in that both the temperatures and angular velocities of
the two horizons coincide. The thermal evolution of the spacetime is shown to
lead to the pure de Sitter spacetime, which is the most entropic configuration.
We then provide a comprehensive study of the wave equation for a massless
scalar in the rotating Nariai geometry. The absorption cross section at the
black hole horizon is computed and a condition is found for when the scattering
becomes superradiant. The boundary-to-boundary correlators at finite
temperature are computed at future infinity. The quasinormal modes are obtained
in explicit form. Finally, we obtain an expression for the expectation value of
the number of particles produced at future infinity starting from a vacuum
state with no incoming particles at past infinity. Some of our results are used
to provide further evidence for a recent holographic proposal between the
rotating Nariai geometry and a two-dimensional conformal field theory.Comment: 35 + 1 pages, 9 figures; v3: typos correcte
HUWE1 E3 ligase promotes PINK1/PARKINindependent mitophagy by regulating AMBRA1 activation via IKKa
The selective removal of undesired or damaged mitochondria by autophagy, known as mitophagy, is crucial for cellular homoeostasis, and prevents tumour diffusion, neurodegeneration and ageing. The pro-autophagic molecule AMBRA1 (autophagy/beclin-1 regulator-1) has been defined as a novel regulator of mitophagy in both PINK1/PARKIN-dependent and -independent systems. Here, we identified the E3 ubiquitin ligase HUWE1 as a key inducing factor in AMBRA1-mediated mitophagy, a process that takes place independently of the main mitophagy receptors. Furthermore, we show that mitophagy function of AMBRA1 is post-translationally controlled, upon HUWE1 activity, by a positive phosphorylation on its serine 1014. This modification is mediated by the IKKα kinase and induces structural changes in AMBRA1, thus promoting its interaction with LC3/GABARAP (mATG8) proteins and its mitophagic activity. Altogether, these results demonstrate that AMBRA1 regulates mitophagy through a novel pathway, in which HUWE1 and IKKα are key factors, shedding new lights on the regulation of mitochondrial quality control and homoeostasis in mammalian cells
Developmental changes in the role of different metalinguistic awareness skills in Chinese reading acquisition from preschool to third grade

use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original author and source are credited.The present study investigated the relationship between Chinese reading skills and metalinguistic awareness skills such as phonological, morphological, and orthographic awareness for 101 Preschool, 94 Grade-1, 98 Grade-2, and 98 Grade-3 children from two primary schools in Mainland China. The aim of the study was to examine how each of these metalinguistic awareness skills would exert their influence on the success of reading in Chinese with age. The results showed that all three metalinguistic awareness skills significantly predicted reading success. It further revealed that orthographic awareness played a dominant role in the early stages of reading acquisition, and its influence decreased with age, while the opposite was true for the contribution of morphological awareness. The results were in stark contrast with studies in English, where phonological awareness is typically shown as the single most potent metalinguistic awareness factor in literacy acquisition. Characteristic Evolution and Matching
I review the development of numerical evolution codes for general relativity
based upon the characteristic initial value problem. Progress in characteristic
evolution is traced from the early stage of 1D feasibility studies to 2D
axisymmetric codes that accurately simulate the oscillations and gravitational
collapse of relativistic stars and to current 3D codes that provide pieces of a
binary black hole spacetime. Cauchy codes have now been successful at
simulating all aspects of the binary black hole problem inside an artificially
constructed outer boundary. A prime application of characteristic evolution is
to extend such simulations to null infinity where the waveform from the binary
inspiral and merger can be unambiguously computed. This has now been
accomplished by Cauchy-characteristic extraction, where data for the
characteristic evolution is supplied by Cauchy data on an extraction worldtube
inside the artificial outer boundary. The ultimate application of
characteristic evolution is to eliminate the role of this outer boundary by
constructing a global solution via Cauchy-characteristic matching. Progress in

Genetic defects are common in myopathies with tubular aggregates
Objective: A group of genes have been reported to be associated with myopathies with tubular aggregates (TAs). Many cases with TAs still lack of genetic
clarification. This study aims to explore the genetic background of cases with
TAs in order to improve our knowledge of the pathogenesis of these rare
pathological structures. Methods: Thirty-three patients including two family
members with biopsy confirmed TAs were collected. Whole-exome sequencing
was performed on 31 unrelated index patients and a candidate gene search
strategy was conducted. The identified variants were confirmed by Sanger
sequencing. The wild-type and the mutant p.Ala11Thr of ALG14 were transfected into human embryonic kidney 293 cells (HEK293), and western blot
analysis was performed to quantify protein expression levels. Results: Eleven
index cases (33%) were found to have pathogenic variant or likely pathogenic
variants in STIM1, ORAI1, PGAM2, SCN4A, CASQ1 and ALG14. Among them,
the c.764A>T (p.Glu255Val) in STIM1 and the c.1333G>C (p.Val445Leu) in
SCN4A were novel. Western blot analysis showed that the expression of ALG14
protein was severely reduced in the mutant ALG14 HEK293 cells (p.Ala11Thr)
compared with wild type. The ALG14 variants might be associated with TAs in
patients with complex multisystem disorders. Interpretation: This study
expands the phenotypic and genotypic spectrums of myopathies with TAs. Our
findings further confirm previous hypothesis that genes related with calcium
signalling pathway and N-linked glycosylation pathway are the main genetic
causes of myopathies with TAs
