4-S Positive Youth Development in Latin America: Professional Schools in Costa Rica
As youth development programs established in the United States expand globally, researchers must evaluate their impacts in diverse contexts. The work described in this article established a baseline for assessing the impact of a 4-S youth program at professional technical high schools in Costa Rica. The 4-S program is equivalent to 4-H in English-speaking countries. Results indicate that members of the 4-S program exhibited significantly higher levels of positive youth development than youths in the comparison group (p \u3c .001). We consider how these findings speak to the importance of promoting programs such as 4-S, and we conclude by discussing the implications of this work for practitioners
Near Infrared Spectra of Type Ia Supernovae
We report near infrared (NIR) spectroscopic observations of twelve
``Branch-normal'' Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) which cover the wavelength region
from 0.8-2.5 microns. Our sample more than doubles the number of SNe Ia with
published NIR spectra within three weeks of maximum light. The epochs of
observation range from thirteen days before maximum light to eighteen days
after maximum light. A detailed model for a Type Ia supernovae is used to
identify spectral features. The Doppler shifts of lines are measured to obtain
the velocity and, thus, the radial distribution of elements.
The NIR is an extremely useful tool to probe the chemical structure in the
layers of SNe Ia ejecta. This wavelength region is optimal for examining
certain products of the SNe Ia explosion that may be blended or obscured in
other spectral regions. We identify spectral features from MgII, CaII, SiII,
FeII, CoII, NiII and possibly MnII. We find no indications for hydrogen, helium
or carbon in the spectra. The spectral features reveal important clues about
the physical characteristics of SNe Ia. We use the features to derive upper
limits for the amount of unburned matter, to identify the transition regions
from explosive carbon to oxygen burning and from partial to complete silicon

A Sub-Picojoule per Bit Integrated Magneto-Optic Modulator on Silicon: Modeling and Experimental Demonstration
Integrated magneto-optic (MO) modulators are an attractive but not fully explored alternative to electro-optic (EO) modulators. They are current driven, structurally simple, and could potentially achieve high efficiency in cryogenic and room temperature environments where fJ bitâ1 optical interfaces are needed. In this paper, the performance and energy efficiency of a novel MO modulator at room temperature are for the first time assessed. First, a model of the micro-ring-based modulator is implemented to investigate the design parameters and their influence on the performance. Then, a fabricated device is experimentally characterized to assess its performance in terms of bit rate and energy efficiency. The model shows efficient operation at 1.2 Gbps using a 16 mA drive current, consuming only 155 fJ bitâ1. The experimental results show that the MO effect is suitable for modulation, achieving error-free operation above 16 mA with a power consumption of 258 fJ bitâ1 at a transient limited data rate of 1.2 Gbps
Tackling Exascale Software Challenges in Molecular Dynamics Simulations with GROMACS
GROMACS is a widely used package for biomolecular simulation, and over the
last two decades it has evolved from small-scale efficiency to advanced
heterogeneous acceleration and multi-level parallelism targeting some of the
largest supercomputers in the world. Here, we describe some of the ways we have
been able to realize this through the use of parallelization on all levels,
combined with a constant focus on absolute performance. Release 4.6 of GROMACS
uses SIMD acceleration on a wide range of architectures, GPU offloading
acceleration, and both OpenMP and MPI parallelism within and between nodes,
respectively. The recent work on acceleration made it necessary to revisit the
fundamental algorithms of molecular simulation, including the concept of
neighborsearching, and we discuss the present and future challenges we see for
exascale simulation - in particular a very fine-grained task parallelism. We
also discuss the software management, code peer review and continuous

Two tricritical lines from a Ginzburg-Landau expansion: application to the LOFF phase
We study the behavior of the two plane waves configuration in the LOFF phase
close to T=0. The study is performed by using a Landau-Ginzburg expansion up to
the eighth order in the gap. The general study of the corresponding grand
potential shows, under the assumption that the eighth term in the expansion is
strictly positive, the existence of two tricritical lines. This allows to
understand the existence of a second tricritical point for two antipodal plane
waves in the LOFF phase and justifies why the transition becomes second order
at zero temperature. The general analysis done in this paper can be applied to

Simulations of electromagnetic effects in high frequency capacitively coupled discharges using the Darwin approximation
The Darwin approximation is investigated for its possible use in simulation
of electromagnetic effects in large size, high frequency capacitively coupled
discharges. The approximation is utilized within the framework of two different
fluid models which are applied to typical cases showing pronounced standing
wave and skin effects. With the first model it is demonstrated that Darwin
approximation is valid for treatment of such effects in the range of parameters
under consideration. The second approach, a reduced nonlinear Darwin
approximation-based model, shows that the electromagnetic phenomena persist in
a more realistic setting. The Darwin approximation offers a simple and
efficient way of carrying out electromagnetic simulations as it removes the
Courant condition plaguing explicit electromagnetic algorithms and can be
implemented as a straightforward modification of electrostatic algorithms. The
algorithm described here avoids iterative schemes needed for the divergence
cleaning and represents a fast and efficient solver, which can be used in fluid
and kinetic models for self-consistent description of technical plasmas
exhibiting certain electromagnetic activity
HUT observations of carbon monoxide in the coma of Comet Levy (1990c)
Observations of comet Levy (1990c) were made with the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope during the Astro-1 Space Shuttle mission on 10 Dec. 1990. The spectrum, covering the wavelength range 415 to 1850 A at a spectral emission of 3 A (in first order), shows the presence of carbon monoxide and atomic hydrogen, carbon, and sulfur in the coma. Aside from H I Lyman-beta, no cometary features are detected below 1200 A, although cometary O I and O II would be masked by the same emissions present in the day airglow spectrum. The 9.4 x 116 arcsec aperture corresponds to 12,000 x 148,000 km at the comet. The derived production rate of CO relative to water, 0.13 + or - 0.02, compared with the same ratio derived from IUE observations (made in Sep. 1990) which sample a much smaller region of the coma, 0.04 + or - 0.01, suggests the presence of an extended source of CO, as was found in comet Halley. Upper limits on Ne and Ar abundance are within an order of magnitude or solar abundances

Morale is high in acute inpatient psychiatry
Background: Morale on acute psychiatric wards has been considered to be problematic, and is reported to contribute to low quality patient care.
Aim: To assess the relationship of staff morale to patient, service environment, physical environment, patient routines, conflict, containment, staff demographics, and staff group variables.
Method: A multivariate cross sectional study was undertaken collecting data on morale and other variables on 136 acute admission psychiatric wards in England.
Results: Morale was higher than published comparison samples. Length of time in post was correlated with low morale, and qualified nurses had higher emotional exhaustion but also higher personal accomplishment. The level of verbal abuse on a ward was associated with low morale, as was a higher level of social deprivation among patients. Higher levels of order and organisation correlated with better morale.
Conclusions: Clear policies relating to the management of verbal abuse by patients, high levels of order and organisation, and staff rotation and education, may all support high morale. Acute inpatient psychiatry is generally a happy and rewarding work environment, and identified problems are likely to be due to other factors
The Bolocam Galactic Plane Survey. XIV. Physical Properties of Massive Starless and Star Forming Clumps
We sort molecular clouds between from the
Bolocam Galactic Plane Survey based on observational diagnostics of star
formation activity: compact sources, mid-IR color-selected
YSOs, and masers, and UCHII regions. We also
present a combined -derived gas kinetic temperature and maser catalog for clumps from our own GBT 100m observations and
from the literature. We identify a subsample of () starless
clump candidates, the largest and most robust sample identified from a blind
survey to date. Distributions of flux density, flux concentration, solid angle,
kinetic temperature, column density, radius, and mass show strong ( dex)
progressions when sorted by star formation indicator. The median starless clump
candidate is marginally sub-virial () with of clumps
with known distance being gravitationally bound (). These samples
show a statistically significant increase in the median clump mass of M from the starless candidates to clumps associated with
protostars. This trend could be due to (i) mass growth of the clumps at
Msun Myr for an average free-fall Myr
time-scale, (ii) a systematic factor of two increase in dust opacity from
starless to protostellar phases, (iii) and/or a variation in the ratio of
starless to protostellar clump lifetime that scales as . By
comparing to the observed number of maser containing clumps we
estimate the phase-lifetime of massive ( M) starless clumps to
be ; the majority
( M) have phase-lifetimes longer than their average free-fall

Casimir Energy of a Spherical Shell
The Casimir energy for a conducting spherical shell of radius is computed
using a direct mode summation approach. An essential ingredient is the
implementation of a recently proposed method based on Cauchy's theorem for an
evaluation of the eigenfrequencies of the system. It is shown, however, that
this earlier calculation uses an improper set of modes to describe the waves
exterior to the sphere. Upon making the necessary corrections and taking care
to ensure that no mathematically ill-defined expressions occur, the technique
is shown to leave numerical results unaltered while avoiding a longstanding
criticism raised against earlier calculations of the Casimir energy.Comment: LaTeX, 14 pages, 1 figur
