Investigation on the Luminescence Properties of InMO4 (M = V5+, Nb5+, Ta5+) Crystals Doped with Tb3+ or Yb3+ Rare Earth Ions
We explore the potential of Tb- and Yb-doped InVO4, InTaO4, and InNbO4 for applications as phosphors for light-emitting sources. Doping below 0.2% barely change the crystal structure and Raman spectrum but provide optical excitation and emission properties in the visible and near-infrared (NIR) spectral regions. From optical measurements, the energy of the first/second direct band gaps was determined to be 3.7/4.1 eV in InVO4, 4.7/5.3 in InNbO4, and 5.6/6.1 eV in InTaO4. In the last two cases, these band gaps are larger than the fundamental band gap (being indirect gap materials), while for InVO4, a direct band gap semiconductor, the fundamental band gap is at 3.7 eV. As a consequence, this material shows a strong self-activated photoluminescence centered at 2.2 eV. The other two materials have a weak self-activated signal at 2.2 and 2.9 eV. We provide an explanation for the origin of these signals taking into account the analysis of the polyhedral coordination around the pentavalent cations (V, Nb, and Ta). Finally, the characteristic green (D-5(4) -> F-7(J)) and NIR (F-2(5/2) -> F-2(7/2)) emissions of Tb3+ and Yb3+ have been analyzed and explained
Antimicrobial and antioxidant screening of curcumin and pyrocatechol in the prevention of biodiesel degradation: oxidative stability
Owing to its hygroscopicity biodiesel may accumulate water during storage, which becomes favorable to the growth of microorganisms. In order to control microbial contamination, use of various chemical biocides has been studied. However, the addition of a natural substance simultaneously with antioxidant and microbial growth inhibition could prove advantageous in the prevention of biodiesel oxidation and microbial contamination. Curcumin and pyrocatechol are antioxidant agents, which also exhibit microbial growth inhibition abilities. This research effort aimed at evaluating the addition of curcumin and pyrocatechol to biodiesel produced from various vegetable sources (waste frying oil, soybean oil, cottonseed oil, sesame oil, macaúba almond oil and microalgae oil). The combined addition of 1% (w/w) water and curcumin (viz. 0.2% (w/w) for biodiesel from spent frying oil, 0.5% (w/w) for biodiesel from soybean oil, 0.1% (w/w) for biodiesel from cotton seed oil, 0.5% (w/w) for biodiesel from sesame seed oil, 0.2% (w/w) for biodiesel from macaúba almond oil, and 0.2% (w/w) for biodiesel from microalgae oil) were those processing variables that promoted the best fungistatic and antioxidant effects, allowing maintenance of an unfavorable environment for microbial growth in biodiesel inoculated with the ubiquitous filamentous mold Paecilomyces variotii Bainier.Project funding by CNPq (National Council for Scientific and Technological Development - Brazil) (CNPq Ref. Simultaneous Extraction of the Fermi constant and PMNS matrix elements in the presence of a fourth generation
Several recent studies performed on constraints of a fourth generation of
quarks and leptons suffer from the ad-hoc assumption that 3 x 3 unitarity holds
for the first three generations in the neutrino sector. Only under this
assumption one is able to determine the Fermi constant G_F from the muon
lifetime measurement with the claimed precision of G_F = 1.16637 (1) x 10^-5
GeV^-2. We study how well G_F can be extracted within the framework of four
generations from leptonic and radiative mu and tau decays, as well as from K_l3
decays and leptonic decays of charged pions, and we discuss the role of lepton
universality tests in this context. We emphasize that constraints on a fourth
generation from quark and lepton flavour observables and from electroweak
precision observables can only be obtained in a consistent way if these three
sectors are considered simultaneously. In the combined fit to leptonic and
radiative mu and tau decays, K_l3 decays and leptonic decays of charged pions
we find a p-value of 2.6% for the fourth generation matrix element |U_{e 4}|=0

Physical constraints on a class of two-Higgs doublet models with FCNC at tree level
We analyse the constraints and some of the phenomenological implications of a class of two Higgs doublet models where there are flavour-changing neutral currents (FCNC) at tree level but the potentially dangerous FCNC couplings are suppressed by small entries of the CKM matrix V. This class of models have the remarkable feature that, as a result of a discrete symmetry of the Lagrangian, the FCNC couplings are entirely fixed in the quark sector by V and the ratio v(2)/v(1) of the vevs of the neutral Higgs. The discrete symmetry is extended to the leptonic sector, so that there are FCNC in the leptonic sector with their flavour structure fixed by the leptonic mixing matrix. We analyse a large number of processes, including decays mediated by charged Higgs at tree level, processes involving FCNC at tree level, as well as loop induced processes. We show that in this class of models one has new physical scalars beyond the standard Higgs boson, with masses reachable at the next round of experiments
The flavor puzzle in multi-Higgs models
We reconsider the flavor problem in the models with two Higgs doublets. By
studying two generation toy models, we look for flavor basis independent
constraints on Yukawa couplings that will give us the mass hierarchy while
keeping all Yukawa couplings of the same order. We then generalize our findings
to the full three generation Standard Model. We find that we need two
constraints on the Yukawa couplings to generate the observed mass hierarchy,
and a slight tuning of Yukawa couplings of order 10%, much less than the
Standard Model. We briefly study how these constraints can be realized, and
show how flavor changing currents are under control for mixing in

CP properties of symmetry-constrained two-Higgs-doublet models
The two-Higgs-doublet model can be constrained by imposing Higgs-family
symmetries and/or generalized CP symmetries. It is known that there are only
six independent classes of such symmetry-constrained models. We study the CP
properties of all cases in the bilinear formalism. An exact symmetry implies CP
conservation. We show that soft breaking of the symmetry can lead to

A clean signal for a top-like isosinglet fermion at the Large Hadron Collider
We predict a clean signal at the Large Hadron Collider (=14 TeV for
a scenario where there is a top-like, charge +2/3 vectorlike isosinglet
fermion. Such a quark, via mixing with the standard model top, can undergo
decays via both flavour-changing Z-boson coupling and flavour-changing Yukawa
interactions. We concentrate on the latter channel, and study the situation
where, following its pair-production, the heavy quark pair gives rise to two
tops and two Higgs boson. We show that the case where each Higgs decays in the
channel, there can be a rather distinct and background-free signal
that can unveil the existence of the vectorlike isosinglet quark of this kind.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, 4 table
Universality of Strength of Yukawa Couplings, Quark Singlets and Strength of CP Violation
We analyse the strength of CP violation in an extension of the standard model
with an extra vector-like singlet quark, in the framework of the
hypothesis of universality of strength of Yukawa couplings connecting standard
quarks. We show that the correct pattern of quark masses and mixing can be

Two-Higgs Leptonic Minimal Flavour Violation
We construct extensions of the Standard Model with two Higgs doublets, where
there are flavour changing neutral currents both in the quark and leptonic
sectors, with their strength fixed by the fermion mixing matrices and
. These models are an extension to the leptonic sector of the class
of models previously considered by Branco, Grimus and Lavoura, for the quark
sector. We consider both the cases of Dirac and Majorana neutrinos and identify
the minimal discrete symmetry required in order to implement the models in a

Higgs-mediated FCNCs: Natural Flavour Conservation vs. Minimal Flavour Violation
We compare the effectiveness of two hypotheses, Natural Flavour Conservation
(NFC) and Minimal Flavour Violation (MFV), in suppressing the strength of
flavour-changing neutral-currents (FCNCs) in models with more than one Higgs
doublet. We show that the MFV hypothesis, in its general formulation, is more
stable in suppressing FCNCs than the hypothesis of NFC alone when quantum
corrections are taken into account. The phenomenological implications of the
two scenarios are discussed analysing meson-antimeson mixing observables and
the rare decays B -> mu+ mu-. We demonstrate that, introducing flavour-blind CP
phases, two-Higgs doublet models respecting the MFV hypothesis can accommodate
a large CP-violating phase in Bs mixing, as hinted by CDF and D0 data and,
without extra free parameters, soften significantly in a correlated manner the
