Digital Loa and Faith You Can Taste: Hoodoo in the American Imagination

Utilizing popular culture mediums and artifacts, this dissertation examines the ways in which the American imaginary plasticizes the faith of Hoodoo and continually strips it of its religious, historic, and cultural impacts. Rather than being acknowledged as a religion, Hoodoo is presented in cultural mediums as something inherently consumable, commercial, and capable of endless, identical reproductions. The artifacts produced around this plastic representation are contemporary reproductions of racist, colonial, and paternalistic historic narratives that have damaging effects both on the religion and Black bodies. The dissertation argues that larger American culture perpetually reproduces these representations to profit from covert racism and religious paternalism while simultaneously erasing its history of Black culture and American colonialism

Revisando o processo de certificação florestal / Reviewing the process of forest certification

ResumoEste trabalho tem como objetivo revisar o papel dos processos de certificação para a consolidação das técnicas de manejo florestal sob o tripé da viabilidade econômica, preservação ambiental e justiça social. Inicialmente é apresentado o tema desmatamento, justificando a importância da atividade produtiva das florestas plantadas. São descritas algumas características econômicas e ambientais do setor, subsidiando o próximo tópico, em que se evidencia a dimensão social do desenvolvimento florestal. São citadas as características dos dois selos de Certificação Florestal que existem no País: o Forest Stewarship Council (FSC) e o Programa Brasileiro de Certificação Florestal (Cerflor), procurando estabelecer comparações entre suas normas, padrões e princípios. Finalmente, são citadas a Certificação da Cadeia de Custódia, a Certificação em Grupo e a Certificação dos Produtos florestais não madeiráveis. Conclui-se que os processos de certificação contribuem para a consolidação no setor de práticas para o desenvolvimento sustentável.AbstractThe objective of this paper has been to revise the role of the certification processes for the consolidation of three forest management techniques, namely economical viability, environmental preservation and social justice. Firstly, the theme of deforestation is presented, advocating the importance of the productive activities of the planted forests. A few economic and environmental characteristics of the sector are described as a background for the next topic, which emphasizes the social dimension of forest development. The characteristics of the two kinds of Forest Certification which exist in the Country are mentioned: Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Brazilian Program of Forest Certification (Cerflor). The goal is to establish comparisons among their norms, patterns and beginnings. Finally, the Chain of Custody Certification, the Certification in Group and the Certification of the Non Wood Forest Products are mentioned. The certification processes contribute in the consolidation in the sector of practices for sustainable development

Nos últimos trinta anos a China apresentou vigoroso desenvolvimento econômico. As formas de interação deste país com o resto do mundo evoluiram neste período a medida em que os chineses ganhavam representatividade no cenário internacional. Uma destas formas de interação se dá através dos investimentos diretos da China em outros países. Estes tipos de investimentos emergiram de maneira expressiva na última década e tornaram o país asiático um grande investidor externo. Assim, o presente trabalho visa a discutir as principais motivações por trás do movimento de expansão dos investimentos externos diretos chineses bem como analisar as distribuições setoriais e geográficas destes investimentos

Impacts of alcohol consumption by mothers and fathers, parental monitoring, adolescent disclosure and novelty-seeking behaviour on the likelihood of alcohol use and inebriation among adolescents

The aim of this prospective cohort study was to examine how alcohol consumption by mothers and fathers, parental monitoring (knowledge, control, and solicitation), adolescent disclosure and novelty seeking were associated with the likelihood of alcohol use and inebriation among adolescents in three different age groups (13–14 years, 14–15 years, and 17 years). The results showed that alcohol consumption by parents is of significance for adolescent alcohol consumption (odds ratio mothers: 1.47 [1.17–1.84], odds ratio fathers 1.33 [1.08–1.65]) and inebriation, especially in the 17-year-old age group. The results showed that novelty seeking was a strong risk factor in all three age groups, while parental control and knowledge had no impact. This study shows that parental solicitation increased the odds at age 17 for alcohol consumption (2.64 [1.02–6.83]) and inebriation, while adolescent disclosure decreased the odds (0.18 [0.05–0.68]). In summary, the study shows that parents should be particularly attentive to adolescents with high novelty-seeking behaviour and that parental alcohol consumption influences adolescent alcohol habits.publishedVersio

Formulações autoritárias e realismos em Oliveira Vianna: variações na política e no direito corporativo

O objetivo deste artigo é apresentar duas proposições de Oliveira Vianna para a agenda institucional brasileira na primeira metade do século 20. O idealismo orgânico – como método para as reformas políticas no Brasil – e o poder normativo – como atributo dos juízes do trabalho – são duas propostas mediadas pelo “realismo” e pelo “objetivismo” defendidos pelo autor. Tanto a elite dirigente e a intelectualidade, quanto os juízes do trabalho, segundo Oliveira Vianna, deveriam se perfazer por um ideal-tipo de abandono do formalismo e da abstração e procurar por abordagens adequadas à realidade instalada. A interpretação do idealismo orgânico e do poder normativo a partir dos realismos político e jurídico é um exercício para analisar, por meio de aproximações e de afastamentos, como as duas propostas se perfazem na unidade da obra de Oliveira Vianna, inseridas no âmbito de seu “autoritarismo instrumental”

Influência do tipo de preparo na resistência de união de compósitos bulk fill flow - análise in vitro

Introduction: Bulk Fill composites have gained popularity by allowing the reduction of the number of increments inserted into the cavity. Since they can be photoactivated in thicknesses of four to five millimeters, they contribute to faster clinical procedures, unlike the two millimeters required for conventional composites. Objective: To analyze the bond strength to dentin of restorations made with Bulk Fill Flow type composites in different class II preparations. Material and method: 30 third human molars were used, which were divided into six groups according to the restorative material used and the type of preparation. The adhesive system used was the same for all groups. Thereafter, the restored teeth were cut to yield toothpicks which were attached to the grips of the microtensile device. Five toothpicks were used for each tooth, totaling 25 toothpicks per group. Microtensile bond strength data were expressed in megapascal (MPa). The fractures were analyzed under an optical microscope. Data were analyzed using ANOVA, Bonferroni and t-tests (p 0.05). Compared the conservative and extensional preparation in each type of composite, there was a statistically significant difference (p 0,05). Comparou-se o preparo conservador e o extenso em cada tipo de compósito, houve diferença estatisticamente significativa (p<0,05) dos compósitos Bulk Fill. Conclusão: Os compósitos Bulk Fill e convencional tiveram um desempenho semelhante em cada tipo de preparo e o preparo extenso obteve menores médias de resistência de união nos grupos dos compósitos Bulk Fill

The issue of concession and a forgotten book

The article aims to recover the reading of Some truths about our labor laws, by Aguinaldo Costa, an engineer from Pernambuco based in São Paulo and a writer inserted in editorial movements led by Caio Prado Júnior in the 1940s. The book was published in 1945, at the end of the Estado Novo, as a critique of the hypothesis of worker incapacity as well as to the idea of rights concession. This empirical research is focused on the qualitative analysis of sources from the 1930s and 1940s, relying especially on procedures of content analysis. The opposition of Aguinaldo Costa to the works of Cesarino Junior and Oliveira Vianna will be emphasized. As a conclusion, we seek to revise an idea deeply rooted in the contemporary Brazilian intellectual field, that the first critical interpretations of the concession representation were only coined from the 1950s on
