Coordinació: Lluís Bosch i Mireia Freixa[eng] The I coupDefouet International Congress was held in June 2013 to celebrate the tenth anniversary of coupDefouet, the magazine of the Art Nouveau European Route, an association of municipalities and other entities to promote and disseminate Modernista or Art Nouveau heritage. Its success and excellent scientific results led to its continuity with a second congress, held in 2015, whose acts are presented in this volume of Singularities.

Reflectometry using Global Navigation Satellite System's signals of opportunity (GNSS-R) was originally conceived in the early 90s for mesoscale altimetry, and since then, many studies have shown its applicability to other remote sensing applications. In 2002, the Remote Sensing Lab at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya started working in Global Navigation Satellite Reflectometry (GNSS-R) to perform a more accurate correction of the sea state when retrieving sea surface salinity from L-band microwave radiometer data (e.g. SMOS). During these 12 years, the lab has developed ground-based, airborne, balloon, and spaceborne GNSS-R payloads for a number of different applications. This paper provides an overview of the families of instruments, and the design choices made.Peer Reviewe

Rare variants in calcium homeostasis modulator 1 (CALHM1) found in early onset Alzheimer's disease patients alter calcium homeostasis.

Calcium signaling in the brain is fundamental to the learning and memory process and there is evidence to suggest that its dysfunction is involved in the pathological pathways underlying Alzheimer's disease (AD). Recently, the calcium hypothesis of AD has received support with the identification of the non-selective Ca2+-permeable channel CALHM1. A genetic polymorphism (p. P86L) in CALHM1 reduces plasma membrane Ca2+ permeability and is associated with an earlier age-at-onset of AD. To investigate the role of CALHM1 variants in early-onset AD (EOAD), we sequenced all CALHM1 coding regions in three independent series comprising 284 EOAD patients and 326 controls. Two missense mutations in patients (p.G330D and p.R154H) and one (p.A213T) in a control individual were identified. Calcium imaging analyses revealed that while the mutation found in a control (p.A213T) behaved as wild-type CALHM1 (CALHM1-WT), a complete abolishment of the Ca2+ influx was associated with the mutations found in EOAD patients (p.G330D and p.R154H). Notably, the previously reported p. P86L mutation was associated with an intermediate Ca2+ influx between the CALHM1-WT and the p.G330D and p.R154H mutations. Since neither expression of wild-type nor mutant CALHM1 affected amyloid ß-peptide (Aß) production or Aß-mediated cellular toxicity, we conclude that rare genetic variants in CALHM1 lead to Ca2+ dysregulation and may contribute to the risk of EOAD through a mechanism independent from the classical Aß cascad

HEK-293 cells transfected with GFP, CALHM1-WT, CALHM1-P86L, CALHM1-R154H, CALHM1-A213T and CALHM1-G330D were loaded with Fura-2 and tested for Ca2+ influx into the cytoplasm following the removal of Ca2+ from the extracellular media. Time course of Ca2+ signals normalized to the value before the addition of Ca2+ and expressed as the mean±S.E.M. are shown. <b>B</b>. In 2013 the magazine coupDefouet reached its first decade of existence. As a way of celebrating this, the Art Nouveau European Route – the association of cities and other local institutions for the promotion and diffusion of Art Nouveau heritage that created the magazine – organised a magnificent international congress as a framework for scientific exchange and raising public awareness. The first coupDefouet International Congress on Art Nouveau was held in Barcelona, the city from which coupDefouet is published and one of the undisputable world capitals of Art Nouveau.
