The conceptual dichotomies «masculine-feminine», «Self-Other» structure our reality by leaving out any hybrid phenomenon and, therefore, foment inequalities. In the present essay we analyse the expressive strategies that are used in the documentaries ‘Art of Being Yourself’, ‘The Word’ and ‘Vidimo-Nevidimo’ by Kseniia Khrabrykh, an emerging Russian artist who challenges the dichotomous cognitive schemes, creates a symbolic space of encounter with Otherness and thus promotes empathetic and tolerant attitudes towards the inherent social diversity. We start by approaching the theories on the role of alterity in the construction of identity (including perspectives of postcolonial feminisms and queer studies) with the aim to corroborate the presence of its principles in the three mentioned projects. Next, we focus on defining the conceptual discourse of each work, the format of its visual narrative, its way of evoking the problems treated and the level of its interactivity.

Abstract: The representation of water in the visual arts always had a powerful symbolism that was nurtured by religious and philosophical traditions all over the world. Depending on the cultural context, this element can refer to the idea of birth, to the spiritual quest, the subconscious, the road linking the world of the living and the dead, etc. The emergence of cinema as a genre that gives life to a still picture, gives the artist the opportunity to explore expressive possibilities of the "flowing waters" making a visual recurring resource in cinematographic works all over the world. In this article we provide a study of aquatic presence as symbolic and plastic argument in the film, focusing our attention mainly on the comparative analysis of Russian and Western productions. In this sense, the firsts offer aquatic symbolism tune to the Eastern tradition and the seconds opt for the line of catastrophism.  Palabras clave: Agua; cine; búsqueda espiritual; oriental; occidental; modernidad líquida. Get PDF
The Multiple Path Particle Dosimetry (MPPD) model is computer software that estimates and visualizes the deposition, clearance, and retention of particles in the respiratory tract systems of humans, rats, and other species. The mathematical model provides a broad spectrum of settings and input options. This research aims to explore the MPPD model concept and determine the deposition fraction (DF), clearance, and retained mass in the human respiratory tract (HRT) based on the geometric mean diameter (GMD) and mass concentration (MC) of particulate matter (PM) emitted during the 3D printing process. We used the real-time air sample data collected during the 8-hour working shift in the 3D printing office. Ultrafine PM deposits mainly in lungs (56%), fine PM mostly deposits in the upper respiratory tract (URT) (41%) and lungs (39%), but coarse PM mostly deposits in the URT (81%). The biggest DF in lower respiratory tract is ultrafine PM (487 μg), the smaller DF is coarse PM (185 μg) and the smallest DF is fine PM (123 μg). The biggest DF in lung for all PM - lower lobes (fine PM - 60%, ultrafine PM, coarse PM - 61%). In a model, where exposure was 5 hours a day, five days a week, during one month, followed by one year of post-exposure period, it was shown that retained mass in the tracheobronchial (TB) region was 1% for ultrafine and coarse PM each, 2% for fine PM, and 55% for all PM in the pulmonary region. The MPPD software is an easily accessible and valuable tool for assessing the impact of PM on the HRT. Particulate matter decreasing in diameter, tend to deposit mostly in the deeper levels of HRT. Tracheobronchial region clearance is more rapid than pulmonary region clearance. Potentially for persons using the 3D-printer regularly the worst health impact could be associated with smaller size of PM, due to tendency deposit mostly in pulmonary region where the clearance rate is slower

[EN] The present paper offers a reflection on the potential of the platform GOOGLE STREET VIEW as a tool of artistic mediation with the immigrant community. We disigned a workshop that proposes to make a virtual trip to the native land of the participants through this immense 3D photographic archive, creating an album of "borrowed memories" with images of significant landscapes for them. The change of the country of residence not only exposes the person to a different culture, it also deprives him of contact with places that keep memories of the events of his past. The intimate relationship between memory, identity and landscape, gives the images that portray these spaces a powerful emotional load, allowing the immigrant to tell their story from the stages of their past performance. In this sense, the activity we propose gives the opportunity to participants to recall their place of origin through the photographic landscape with the goal of restoring the continuity of their narrative identity, interrupted by the experience of displacement. Likewise, presenting the visual story to the companions allows sharing the mourning of uprooting, building new affective ties with the host environment.[ES] La presente comunicación ofrece una reflexión sobre el potencial de la plataforma GOOGLE STREET VIEW como herramienta de mediación artística dirigida al colectivo inmigrante. Inhibitory effect of lignin on the hydrolysis of xylan by thermophilic and thermolabile GH11 xylanases

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: Enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass into platform sugars can be enhanced by the addition of accessory enzymes, such as xylanases. Lignin from steam pretreated biomasses is known to inhibit enzymes by non-productively binding enzymes and limiting access to cellulose. The effect of enzymatically isolated lignin on the hydrolysis of xylan by four glycoside hydrolase (GH) family 11 xylanases was studied. Two xylanases from the mesophilic Trichoderma reesei, TrXyn1, TrXyn2, and two forms of a thermostable metagenomic xylanase Xyl40 were compared. RESULTS: Lignin isolated from steam pretreated spruce decreased the hydrolysis yields of xylan for all the xylanases at 40 and 50 °C. At elevated hydrolysis temperature of 50 °C, the least thermostable xylanase TrXyn1 was most inhibited by lignin and the most thermostable xylanase, the catalytic domain (CD) of Xyl40, was least inhibited by lignin. Enzyme activity and binding to lignin were studied after incubation of the xylanases with lignin for up to 24 h at 40 °C. All the studied xylanases bound to lignin, but the thermostable xylanases retained 22–39% of activity on the lignin surface for 24 h, whereas the mesophilic T. reesei xylanases become inactive. Removing of N-glycans from the catalytic domain of Xyl40 increased lignin inhibition in hydrolysis of xylan when compared to the glycosylated form. By comparing the 3D structures of these xylanases, features contributing to the increased thermal stability of Xyl40 were identified. CONCLUSIONS: High thermal stability of xylanases Xyl40 and Xyl40-CD enabled the enzymes to remain partially active on the lignin surface. N-glycosylation of the catalytic domain of Xyl40 increased the lignin tolerance of the enzyme. Thermostability of Xyl40 was most likely contributed by a disulphide bond and salt bridge in the N-terminal and α-helix regions.
