    Synergistic effect of Indium and Gallium co-doping on growth behavior and physical properties of hydrothermally grown ZnO nanorods

    We synthesized ZnO nanorods (NRs) using simple hydrothermal method, with the simultaneous incorporation of gallium (Ga) and indium (In), in addition, investigated the co-doping effect on the morphology, microstructure, electronic structure, and electrical/optical properties. The growth behavior of the doped NRs was affected by the nuclei density and polarity of the (001) plane. The c-axis parameter of the co-doped NRs was similar to that of undoped NRs due to the compensated lattice distortion caused by the presence of dopants that are both larger (In3+) and smaller (Ga3+) than the host Zn2+ cations. Red shifts in the ultraviolet emission peaks were observed in all doped NRs, owing to the combined effects of NR size, band gap renormalization, and the presence of stacking faults created by the dopant-induced lattice distortions. In addition, the NR/p-GaN diodes using co-doped NRs exhibited superior electrical conductivity compared to the other specimens due to the increase in the charge carrier density of NRs and the relatively large effective contact area of (001) planes. The simultaneous doping of In and Ga is therefore anticipated to provide a broader range of optical, physical, and electrical properties of ZnO NRs for a variety of opto-electronic applications

    Rate of Isolation and Trends of Antimicrobial Resistance of Multidrug Resistant Pseudomonas Aeruginosa from Otorrhea in Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media

    ObjectivesTo assess the rate of isolation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) and multidrug-resistant PA (MDR-PA) from patients with chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) otorrhea and the annual trend of antibiotic-resistance.MethodsOtorrhea samples were collected aseptically from 1,598 CSOM patients. The rate of bacterial isolation and the results of antibiotic susceptibility testing were evaluated retrospectively.ResultsThe PA isolation rate from CSOM otorrhea was 24.4%. Of the 398 isolated strains tested for their susceptibilities to 10 antibiotics, 395 strains showed definitive results. Of these, 183 (46.3%) were susceptible to whole antibiotics and 212 (53.7%) was resistant to more than 1 antibiotics, with the frequency of antibiotics-resistance increasing significantly over time. Although strains susceptible to all antibiotics decreased over time, the rate of isolation of MDR-PA did not change significantly. Resistance to aminoglycosides and quinolones was higher than to other antibiotics and significantly increased over time, whereas resistance to other antibiotics showed no trend.ConclusionMDR-PA, assessed using five individual antibiotics and six antibiotic-classes, showed no tendency to increase or decrease over time. This may have been due to increased concern about antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains, leading to improved infection control within hospitals and healthcare centers

    Metal-doped ZnO films with various metal contents (Al, Ag and Li of 0–10 wt.%) were prepared by RF magnetron sputtering system with specially designed ZnO targets. The structural, optical and electrical properties of MZO films depended on the type and content of doping in target. Electrical resistivity of LZO thin films increased with increasing Li doping amounts between 0 and 4 wt.%, suggesting that an epitaxial LZO film has high resistivity. We observed morphology in pure ZnO films by using different etchant. In addition, etching rate were contrasted with the etchant concentration and pH. The etching rate is proportional exponentially to pH value. These data will be the technical basis for TCO application. Also, the dry etching rate decreased with increasing the Cl2 concentration in CH4/H2/Ar + additive Cl2 gas mixture but metal dopants were etched effectively.Metal-doped ZnO thin films, optical and electrical property, etching, organic light emitting diode

    Renal artery thrombosis secondary to sepsis-induced disseminated intravascular coagulation in acute pyelonephritis

    There are some reports of renal vein thrombosis associated with acute pyelonephritis, but a case of renal artery thrombosis in acute pyelonephritis has not been reported yet. Here we report a case of renal artery thrombosis which developed in a patient with acute pyelonephritis complicated with sepsis-induced disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). A 65-year-old woman with diabetes was diagnosed with acute pyelonephritis complicated with sepsis. Escherichia coli was isolated from both blood and urine cultures. When treated with antibiotics, her condition gradually improved. She suddenly complained of severe right flank pain without fever in the recovery phase. A computed tomography scan revealed right renal artery thrombosis with concomitant renal infarction. Prophylactic anticoagulation therapy was not suggested because of sustained thrombocytopenia and increased risk of bleeding. Flank pain resolved with conservative treatment and perfusion of infarcted kidney improved at the time of discharge. To our knowledge, this is the first case of renal artery thrombosis related to acute pyelonephritis with sepsis-induced DIC

    Impact of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors versus angiotensin receptor blockers on clinical outcomes in hypertensive patients with acute myocardial infarction

    There has been a concern that angiotensin receptor blockers (ARB) may increase myocardial infarction (MI) in hypertensive patients compared with other classes of anti-hypertensive drugs. Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI) is recommended as a first-line inhibitor of renin-angiotensin system (RASI) in patients with acute MI (AMI), but ARB is also frequently used to control blood pressure. This study investigated the association of ARB vs. ACEI with the long-term clinical outcomes in hypertensive patients with AMI. Among patients enrolled in the nationwide AMI database of South Korea, the KAMIR-NIH, 4,827 hypertensive patients, who survived the initial attack and were taking ARB or ACEI at discharge, were selected for this study. ARB therapy was associated with higher incidence of 2-year major adverse cardiac events, cardiac death, all-cause death, MI than ACEI therapy in entire cohort. After propensity score-matching, ARB therapy was still associated with higher incidence of 2-year cardiac death (hazard ratio [HR], 1.60; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.20–2.14; P = 0.001), all-cause death (HR, 1.81; 95% CI, 1.44–2.28; P < 0.001), and MI (HR, 1.76; 95% CI, 1.25–2.46; P = 0.001) than the ACEI therapy. It was concluded that ARB therapy at discharge in hypertensive patients with AMI was inferior to ACEI therapy with regard to the incidence of CD, all-cause death, and MI at 2-year. These data suggested that ACEI be a more appropriate RASI than ARB to control BP in hypertensive patients with AMI

    Ultra fast metal-free reduction catalyst of partial oxidized violet phosphorus synthesized via controlled mechanical energy

    Violet phosphorus (VP), also known as Hittorf’s phosphorus (HP), is promised a next-generation 2D material with black phosphorus (BP). It is an intermediate in the process of synthesizing blacks starting with red phosphorus (RP), and has a unique activity. This VP does not show up in both red and black, and has a catalytic reduction performance. This catalytic performance was further enhanced by the partially oxidized P=O structure and showed a recyclable performance by reducing the 30 mg l−1 high concentration dye in a few minutes.The properties of the synthesized materials were confirmed by XRD, TEM, SEM, EDS, UV–vis–NIR spectrophotometer, FT-IR, EPR and Raman spectroscopy techniques. Dye materials were quantitatively analyzed by UV–vis-spectrophotometer using 4-nitrophenol, methylene blue (MB), rhodamine B, and the catalytic activity was measured. The amorphous VP had a very strong negative charge and the P=O structure acted as a redox functional group. The objective of this study was to investigate the low cost and high efficiency metal-free reduction catalyst materials due to these characteristics. © 2019 IOP Publishing Lt
