Explosive Percolation in the Human Protein Homology Network
We study the explosive character of the percolation transition in a
real-world network. We show that the emergence of a spanning cluster in the
Human Protein Homology Network (H-PHN) exhibits similar features to an
Achlioptas-type process and is markedly different from regular random
percolation. The underlying mechanism of this transition can be described by
slow-growing clusters that remain isolated until the later stages of the
process, when the addition of a small number of links leads to the rapid
interconnection of these modules into a giant cluster. Our results indicate
that the evolutionary-based process that shapes the topology of the H-PHN
through duplication-divergence events may occur in sudden steps, similarly to
what is seen in first-order phase transitions.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figure
Smoothed Complexity Theory
Smoothed analysis is a new way of analyzing algorithms introduced by Spielman
and Teng (J. ACM, 2004). Classical methods like worst-case or average-case
analysis have accompanying complexity classes, like P and AvgP, respectively.
While worst-case or average-case analysis give us a means to talk about the
running time of a particular algorithm, complexity classes allows us to talk
about the inherent difficulty of problems.
Smoothed analysis is a hybrid of worst-case and average-case analysis and
compensates some of their drawbacks. Despite its success for the analysis of
single algorithms and problems, there is no embedding of smoothed analysis into
computational complexity theory, which is necessary to classify problems
according to their intrinsic difficulty.
We propose a framework for smoothed complexity theory, define the relevant
classes, and prove some first hardness results (of bounded halting and tiling)
and tractability results (binary optimization problems, graph coloring,
satisfiability). Furthermore, we discuss extensions and shortcomings of our

A multidimensional account of democratic legitimacy: how to make robust decisions in a non-idealized deliberative context
This paper analyses the possibility of granting legitimacy to democratic decisionmaking procedures in a context of deep pluralism. We defend a multidimensional
account according to which a legitimate system needs to grant, on the one hand, that citizens should be included on an equal footing and acknowledged
as reflexive political agents rather than mere beneficiaries of policies, and, on the other hand, that their decisions have an epistemic quality. While Estlund\u2019s
account of imperfect epistemic proceduralism might seem to embody a dualistic conception of democratic legitimacy, we point out that it is not able to recognize
citizens as reflexive political agents and is grounded in an idealized model of the circumstances of deliberation. To overcome these ambiguities, we develop an
account of democratic legitimacy according to which disagreement is the proper expression of citizens\u2019 reflexive agency and the attribution of epistemic authority
does not stem from a major expertise or specific ability, but it comes through the public confrontation among disagreeing agents. Consequently, the epistemic
value of deliberation should be derived from the reasons-giving process rather than from the reference to the alleged quality of its outcomes. In this way, we
demonstrate the validity of the multidimensional perspective of legitimacy, yet abstain from introducing any outcome-oriented criterion. Finally, we argue that
this account of legitimacy is well suited for modeling deliberative democracy as a decision-making procedure that respects the agency of every citizen and grants
her opportunity to influence public choices
Improved limit on the directly measured antiproton lifetime
Continuous monitoring of a cloud of antiprotons stored in a Penning trap for 405 days enables us to set an improved limit on the directly measured antiproton lifetime. From our measurements we extract a storage time of 3.15x108 equivalent antiproton-seconds, resulting in a lower lifetime limit of Tp > 10.2,a with a confidence level of 68%. This result improves the limit on charge-parity-time violation in antiproton decays based on direct observation by a factor of 7
Child and adolescent psychiatric patients and later criminality
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Sweden has an extensive child and adolescent psychiatric (CAP) research tradition in which longitudinal methods are used to study juvenile delinquency. Up to the 1980s, results from descriptions and follow-ups of cohorts of CAP patients showed that children's behavioural disturbances or disorders and school problems, together with dysfunctional family situations, were the main reasons for families, children, and youth to seek help from CAP units. Such factors were also related to registered criminality and registered alcohol and drug abuse in former CAP patients as adults. This study investigated the risk for patients treated 1975–1990 to be registered as criminals until the end of 2003.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A regional sample of 1,400 former CAP patients, whose treatment occurred between 1975 and 1990, was followed to 2003, using database-record links to the Register of Persons Convicted of Offences at the National Council for Crime Prevention (NCCP).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Every third CAP patient treated between 1975 and 1990 (every second man and every fifth woman) had entered the Register of Persons Convicted of Offences during the observation period, which is a significantly higher rate than the general population.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Results were compared to published results for CAP patients who were treated between 1953 and 1955 and followed over 20 years. Compared to the group of CAP patients from the 1950s, the results indicate that the risk for boys to enter the register for criminality has doubled and for girls, the risk seems to have increased sevenfold. The reasons for this change are discussed. Although hypothetical and perhaps speculative this higher risk of later criminality may be the result of lack of social control due to (1) rising consumption of alcohol, (2) changes in organisation of child social welfare work, (3) the school system, and (4) CAP methods that were implemented since 1970.</p
The relationship between baseline Organizational Readiness to Change Assessment subscale scores and implementation of hepatitis prevention services in substance use disorders treatment clinics: a case study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The Organizational Readiness to Change Assessment (ORCA) is a measure of organizational readiness for implementing practice change in healthcare settings that is organized based on the core elements and sub-elements of the Promoting Action on Research Implementation in Health Services (PARIHS) framework. General support for the reliability and factor structure of the ORCA has been reported. However, no published study has examined the utility of the ORCA in a clinical setting. The purpose of the current study was to examine the relationship between baseline ORCA scores and implementation of hepatitis prevention services in substance use disorders (SUD) clinics.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Nine clinic teams from Veterans Health Administration SUD clinics across the United States participated in a six-month training program to promote evidence-based practices for hepatitis prevention. A representative from each team completed the ORCA evidence and context subscales at baseline.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Eight of nine clinics reported implementation of at least one new hepatitis prevention practice after completing the six-month training program. Clinic teams were categorized by level of implementation-high (n = 4) versus low (n = 5)-based on how many hepatitis prevention practices were integrated into their clinics after completing the training program. High implementation teams had significantly higher scores on the patient experience and leadership culture subscales of the ORCA compared to low implementation teams. While not reaching significance in this small sample, high implementation clinics also had higher scores on the research, clinical experience, staff culture, leadership behavior, and measurement subscales as compared to low implementation clinics.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The results of this study suggest that the ORCA was able to measure differences in organizational factors at baseline between clinics that reported high and low implementation of practice recommendations at follow-up. This supports the use of the ORCA to describe factors related to implementing practice recommendations in clinical settings. Future research utilizing larger sample sizes will be essential to support these preliminary findings.</p
BASE-STEP: A transportable antiproton reservoir for fundamental interaction studies
Currently, the only worldwide source of low-energy antiprotons is the
AD/ELENA facility located at CERN. To date, all precision measurements on
single antiprotons have been conducted at this facility and provide stringent
tests of the fundamental interactions and their symmetries. However, the
magnetic field fluctuations from the facility operation limit the precision of
upcoming measurements. To overcome this limitation, we have designed the
transportable antiproton trap system BASE-STEP to relocate antiprotons to
laboratories with a calm magnetic environment. We anticipate that the
transportable antiproton trap will facilitate enhanced tests of CPT invariance
with antiprotons, and provide new experimental possibilities of using
transported antiprotons and other accelerator-produced exotic ions. We present
here the technical design of the transportable trap system. This includes the
transportable superconducting magnet, the cryogenic inlay consisting of the
trap stack and the detection systems, and the differential pumping section to
suppress the residual gas flow into the cryogenic trap chamber.Comment: To be submitted to Rev. Sci. Instrument

Remarks on the Concept of Critique in Habermasian Thought
The main purpose of this paper is to examine the concept of critique in Habermasian thought. Given that the concept of critique is a central theoretical category in the work of the Frankfurt School, it comes as a surprise that little in the way of a systematic account which sheds light on the multifaceted meanings of the concept of critique in Habermas’s oeuvre can be found in the literature. This paper aims to fill this gap by exploring the various meanings that Habermas attributes to the concept of critique in 10 key thematic areas of his writings: (1) the public sphere, (2) knowledge, (3) language, (4) morality, (5) ethics, (6) evolution, (7) legitimation, (8) democracy, (9) religion, and (10) modernity. On the basis of a detailed analysis of Habermas’s multifaceted concerns with the nature and function of critique, the study seeks to demonstrate that the concept of critique can be considered not only as a constitutive element but also as a normative cornerstone of Habermasian thought. The paper draws to a close by reflecting on some of the limitations of Habermas’s conception of critique, arguing that in order to be truly critical in the Habermasian sense we need to turn the subject of critique into an object of critique
