    A "Learned" Approach to Quicken and Compress Rank/Select Dictionaries

    We address the well-known problem of designing, implementing and experimenting compressed data structures for supporting rank and select queries over a dictionary of integers. This problem has been studied far and wide since the end of the ‘80s with tons of important theoretical and practical results. Following a recent line of research on the so-called learned data structures, we first show that this problem has a surprising connection with the geometry of a set of points in the Cartesian plane suitably derived from the input integers. We then build upon some classical results in computational geometry to introduce the first “learned” scheme for implementing a compressed rank/select dictionary. We prove theoretical bounds on its time and space performance both in the worst case and in the case of input distributions with finite mean and variance. We corroborate these theoretical results with a large set of experiments over datasets originating from a variety of sources and applications (Web, DNA sequencing, information retrieval and natural language processing), and we show that a carefully engineered version of our approach provides new interesting space-time trade-offs with respect to several well-established implementations of Elias-Fano, RRR-vector, and random-access vectors of Elias γ/δ-coded gaps

    The digital transformation of Engineering curricula: the categories that preserve Constructive Alignment

    Scientific publications discussing online/distance learning have significantly increased throughout the last decade. The COVID-19 pandemic represented an unexpected condition that significantly changed people´s lifestyle along with the education domain boosting even further its digitalization, mostly at higher levels. In this work, we assume that Teaching Learning Activities (TLA) and Assessment Tasks (AT) should be adjusted to achieve the same Intended Learning Outcomes (ILO) set before distance learning. In view of the above, this paper assesses two courses selected from the Industrial Engineering study program offered in two prominent European higher education institutions. The Constructive Alignment (CA) approach is the baseline of this work and is used to analyse how the TLA and AT of the selected courses are adjusted to maintain alignment with the ILO defined before the digital transition. The main contribution is defining a set of categories to guide the digital transaction in engineering and beyond by maintaining the alignment on ILO-TLA-AT

    Automatic definition of engineer archetypes: A text mining approach

    With the rapid and continuous advancements in technology, as well as the constantly evolving competences required in the field of engineering, there is a critical need for the harmonization and unification of engineering professional figures or archetypes. The current limitations in tymely defining and updating engineers' archetypes are attributed to the absence of a structured and automated approach for processing educational and occupational data sources that evolve over time. This study aims to enhance the definition of professional figures in engineering by automating archetype definitions through text mining and adopting a more objective and structured methodology based on topic modeling. This will expand the use of archetypes as a common language, bridging the gap between educational and occupational frameworks by providing a unified and up-to-date engineering professional figure tailored to a specific period, specialization type, and level. We validate the automatically defined industrial engineer archetype against our previously manually defined profile

    Presentation of peptides by cultured monocytes or activated T cells allows specific priming of human cytotoxic T lymphocytes in vitro

    The conditions favouring effective specific cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) priming have been exploited to set up a simple and reproducible method to induce a primary CTL response in vitro. We report that cultured monocytes, as well as activated T cells, pulsed with exogenous HLA-A2 binding immunogenic peptides, can induce primary peptide-specific CTL responses in vitro in a Th-independent manner. Primary viral peptide-induced CTL were HLA-A2 restricted, and recognized both peptide-pulsed target cells and targets infected with recombinant vaccinia virus expressing viral endogenous antigens. In addition, both cultured monocytes and activated T cells primed peptide-specific CD8+ T cells depleted from the CD45RO+ memory cell fraction. The efficiency of CTL priming by monocytes was dependent upon the strong up-regulation of class I, adhesion and co-stimulatory molecules occurring spontaneously upon in vitro culture. The inability of unseparated peripheral blood mononuclear cells to mount a peptide-specific CTL response could be reverted by direct co-stimulation of responding CD8+ T cells by soluble B7.1 or a stimulatory anti-CD28 antibody, that allowed a specific response to take place. Although co-stimulation via the B7-CD28 interaction appeared sufficient to trigger CTL responses, It was not essential for CTL priming, since neither anti-B7.1 mAb nor soluble CTLA-4 inhibited induction of primary CTL response. This new method for induction of specific CD8+ T cell response in vitro may be exploited in adoptive immunotherapy in cancer or in HIV-infected patient

    Different MRI patterns in MS worsening after stopping fingolimod

    Objective To analyze MRI images in patients with MS who experienced worsening of neurologic status (WNS) after stopping fingolimod (FTY).MethodsIn this retrospective study, demographic, clinical, and radiologic data of patients with MS who experienced WNS after stopping FTY were retrospectively collected. We introduced the "\u3b4Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS)-ratio" to identify patients who, after FTY withdrawal, showed an inflammatory flare-up exceeding the highest lifetime disease activity level. Patients with \u3b4EDSS-ratio > 1 were enrolled in the study.ResultsEight patients were identified. The mean (SD) age of the 8 (7 female) patients was 35.3 (4.9) years. The mean FTY treatment duration was 3.1 (0.8) years. The mean FTY discontinuation-WNS interval was 4 (0.9) months. The 4 patients with \u3b4EDSS-ratio 65 2 developed severe monophasic WNS (EDSS score above 8.5), characterized by clinical features and MRI findings not typical of MS, which we classified as "tumefactive demyelination pattern" (TDL) and "Punctuated pattern" (PL). Conversely, patients whose \u3b4EDSS-ratio was between 1 and 2 had clinical features and brain MRI compatible with a more typical, even if aggressive, MS relapse. In patients with TDL and PL, the flare-up of inflammatory activity led to severe tissue damage resulting in T2 but also T1 lesion volume increase at 6-month follow-up.ConclusionsPeculiar MRI features (TDL and PL), different from a typical MS flare-up, might occur in some patients who experienced WNS after stopping FTY. Further studies, also involving immunologic biomarkers, are necessary to investigate TDL or PL pathophysiology

    Physical Exercise Moderates the Effects of Disability on Depression in People with Multiple Sclerosis during the COVID-19 Outbreak

    Physical disability impacts psychosocial wellbeing in people with multiple sclerosis. However, the role of physical activity in this context is still debated. By taking advantage of a previous survey, conducted online from 22 April to 7 May 2020, we performed a post-hoc analysis with the aim to assess the associations between disability, physical exercise, and mental health in multiple sclerosis. We retrieved the following data: (i) sociodemographic information, (ii) changes in lifestyle (including exercise), (iii) physical disability, as measured with the Patient-Determined Disease Steps scale, and (iv) anxiety feelings and depressive symptoms assessed via the items included in the Quality of Life in Neurological Disorders measurement system. Examination of the interaction plot showed that the effect of disability on depression, but not on anxious symptoms, was significant for all levels of physical exercise (low: b = 1.22, 95% C.I. 0.85, 1.58, p < 0.001; moderate: b = 0.95, 95% C.I. 0.66, 1.24, p < 0.001; and high: b = 0.68, 95% C.I. 0.24, 1.13, p = 0.003). Based on these data, we can conclude that disability significantly impacted depression during the COVID-19 pandemic, with physical activity playing a moderating role. Our results suggest that favoring exercise in multiple sclerosis (MS) would ameliorate psychological wellbeing regardless of the level of physical disability

    Nutrient, fatty acid and mineral composition of selected white food-grade sorghum hybrids grown in a Mediterranean area of Southern Italy

    The nutrient composition, fatty acid content and mineral content of six white food-grade sorghum hybrids selected in either Argentina or Bolivia, and grown in a Mediterranean area of Southern Italy were studied. The six hybrids were analyzed for various attributes including moisture, protein, carbohydrate, dietary fiber, fat contents, fatty acid composition, and mineral content. Slight variations in both protein and in fiber contents were observed among hybrids. Linoleic, oleic and palmitic were the most abundant fatty acids in all samples with noticeable difference in their percentage content between both hybrids from Argentina and Bolivia. Slight variations in the content of the elements were found among the six white sorghum hybrids examined, and K, Fe, and Sb were, respectively, the most abundant macro-element, micro-element and trace element in all analyzed hybrids. These results are discussed in the context of the importance of the white food-grade sorghum in human nutrition, and of the opportunity to select the best varieties from the point of view of nutritional content
