As Lieutenant Governor and Governor of the state, Paul B. Johnson received copies of regular reports prepared by the director of the Sovereignty Commission. These reports comprise nine boxes of the Paul B. Johnson Family Papers and cover the period from 1964 to 1968. The reports were clearly identified but scattered throughout the Johnson Family Papers in no order. There is much overlap between materials in the Sovereignty Commission series and those in the Highway Patrol series, since the two organizations worked together to monitor Civil Rights activities in the state from 1960 to 1968. The collection number is M 191. Reports are arranged by date; other materials by subject

    Congressional Papers in Mississippi Repositories

Historians and other researchers have begun to recognize over the last half century or so that the papers of United States senators and representatives are a treasure of information on many aspects of American life and on America\u27s position on the world stage. These collections contain valuable data on cross-sections of the human experience, shedding light at once on political, social, familial, economic, governmental (all levels), scientific, military, racial and ethnic, environmental, and recreational developments and/or individuals involved in those various areas. Archivists face an enormous challenge in preserving and processing these collections, and making guides available that reflect the many nuances unique to each collection. Mississippi repositories contain several significant congressional collections. Due to a lengthy state tradition of returning senators and representatives to Congress for many consecutive terms, the papers of congressmen tend to be voluminous and reflect extensive periods of history at the local, state, national and international levels. This edition of The Primary Source is intended to inform readers of congressional holdings in four major Mississippi repositories: The Congressional and Political Research Center - Mississippi State University Libraries; McCain Library and Archives -University of Southern Mississippi; Law Archives - University of Mississippi; and the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. Together these four locations contain a wealth of historical information in their congressional collections, information that reflects Mississippi\u27s prominent role through the years at the highest levels of the United States government

Palaeo-geoecological significance of Pleistocene trees in the Lluta Valley, Atacama Desert

In the Lluta Valley, northern Chile, climate is hyperarid and vegetation is restricted to the valley floors and lowermost footslopes. Fossil tree trunks and leaves of predominantly Escallonia angustifolia, however, are abundant up to ∌15 m above the present valley floor, where they are intercalated with slope deposits, reflecting higher water levels in the past. A total of 17 samples have been radiocarbon dated, yielding ages between 38 and 15k cal a BP. The youngest ages of 15.4k cal a BP are interpreted as reflecting the beginning of river incision and lowering of the valley floor, impeding the further growth of trees at higher parts of the slopes. The most plausible scenario for this observation is intensified river incision after 15.4k cal a BP due to increased stream power and runoff from the RĂo Lluta headwaters in the Western Cordillera and Altiplano corresponding to the highstand of the Tauca and Central Andean Pluvial Event (CAPE) wet phase
