Refiguring the Primitive: Institutional Legacies of the Filmology Movement
This contribution examines how the discourse of “the primitive,” as an institutional point of reference developed by the philosopher Lucien Lévy-Bruhl (1857-1939), influenced the establishment of the Institute of Filmology at the University of Paris in 1948. Filmology, a term introduced by Gilbert Cohen-Séat, is described as a positive science with its own strategy of systematizing the study of film as object and institution with its own series of emerging methods. The present article describes the formulation of the “filmic fact” as a positive science indebted to Durkheimian methods, but also as a means of engaging with the multiple strands of “primitivism.” On the one hand, this article elaborates upon the significance of Lévy-Bruhl’s discussion of “primitivism” as an effective cosmology for causation and related inferences which asserts a space of difference to be further explored, and on the other, it explains how “primitivism” has been used to designate historical and psychological attributes within the institution of cinema as an emerging structure of producing meaning.Ce texte s’interroge sur la manière dont le discours sur le « primitif », tel que défini dans la pensée du philosophe Lucien Lévy-Bruhl (1857-1939), a influencé la création de l’Institut de filmologie à l’Université de Paris en 1948. Ainsi baptisé par Gilbert Cohen-Séat, la filmologie est décrite comme une science positive visant à systématiser l’étude du cinéma, à la fois en tant qu’objet et institution, tout en mettant en oeuvre un ensemble de méthodes nouvelles. L’élaboration de la notion de « fait filmique » procéderait ainsi d’une science positive inspirée de la méthode durkheimienne, mais permettrait également d’examiner les différentes facettes du « primitivisme ». D’une part, cet article cherche à dégager la pertinence des propos de Lévy-Bruhl sur le « primitivisme » en tant que cosmologie capable d’appréhender la causalité et les inférences qui lui sont associées, permettant ainsi d’aménager un espace de débat riche en réflexions. Nitrate photo-assimilation in tomato leaves under short-term exposure to elevated carbon dioxide and low oxygen
The role of photorespiration in the foliar assimilation of nitrate (NO 3 -) and carbon dioxide (CO2) was investigated by measuring net CO2 assimilation, net oxygen (O2) evolution, and chlorophyll fluorescence in tomato leaves (Lycopersicon esculentum). The plants were grown under ambient CO2 with ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) as the nitrogen source, and then exposed to a CO2 concentration of either 360 or 700 ÎĽmol mol -1, an O2 concentration of 21 or 2%, and either NO 3 - or NH4 + as the sole nitrogen source. The elevated CO2 concentration stimulated net CO2 assimilation under 21% O2 for both nitrogen treatments, but not under 2% O2. Under ambient CO2 and O2 conditions (i.e. 360 ÎĽmol mol-1 CO2, 21% O 2), plants that received NO3 - had 11-13% higher rates of net O2 evolution and electron transport rate (estimated from chlorophyll fluorescence) than plants that received NH 4 +. Differences in net O2 evolution and electron transport rate due to the nitrogen source were not observed at the elevated CO2 concentration for the 21% O2 treatment or at either CO2 level for the 2% O2 treatment. The assimilatory quotient (AQ) from gas exchange, the ratio of net CO2 assimilation to net O2 evolution, indicated more NO3 - - assimilation under ambient CO2 and O 2 conditions than under the other treatments. When the AQ was derived from gross O2 evolution rates estimated from chlorophyll fluorescence, no differences could be detected between the nitrogen treatments. The results suggest that short-term exposure to elevated atmospheric CO 2 decreases NO3 - assimilation in tomato, and that photorespiration may help to support NO3 - assimilation.Fil: Searles, Peter Stoughton. Ensnaring the Elusive Eodermdrome
We wish to introduce the recreational aspects of the eodermdrome, which is a recently formulated concept dealing with the structure of language units such as letters and words. Although this concept may eventually lead to a numerical way to compare the structural differences between languages and to trace structural development in a single language, the majority of individuals who learn about eodermdromes evince less interest in their potential scholarly ramifications than in the delightful task of creating them
Remote work across jobs, companies and space
The pandemic catalyzed an enduring shift to remote work. To measure and characterize this shift, we examine more than 250 million job vacancy postings across five English-speaking countries. Our measurements rely on a state-of-the-art language-processing framework that we fit, test, and refine using 30,000 human classifications. We achieve 99% accuracy in flagging job postings that advertise hybrid or fully remote work, greatly outperforming dictionary methods and also outperforming other machine-learning methods. From 2019 to early 2023, the share of postings that say new employees can work remotely one or more days per week rose more than three-fold in the U.S and by a factor of five or more in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the U.K. These developments are highly non-uniform across and within cities, industries, occupations, and companies. Even when zooming in on employers in the same industry competing for talent in the same occupations, we find large differences in the share of job postings that explicitly offer remote work
Flexible Lipid Bilayers in Implicit Solvent
A minimalist simulation model for lipid bilayers is presented. Each lipid is
represented by a flexible chain of beads in implicit solvent. The hydrophobic
effect is mimicked through an intermolecular pair potential localized at the
``water''/hydrocarbon tail interface. This potential guarantees realistic
interfacial tensions for lipids in a bilayer geometry. Lipids self assemble
into bilayer structures that display fluidity and elastic properties consistent
with experimental model membrane systems. Varying molecular flexibility allows
for tuning of elastic moduli and area/molecule over a range of values seen in

Assessing the discordance rate between local and central HER2 testing in women with locally determined HER2-negative breast cancer.
BackgroundThe importance of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) as a prognostic and predictive marker in invasive breast cancer is well established. Accurate assessment of HER2 status is essential to determine optimal treatment options.MethodsBreast cancer tumor tissue samples from the VIRGO observational cohort tissue substudy that were locally HER2-negative were retested centrally with both US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved immunohistochemistry (IHC) and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) assays, using FDA-approved assay cutoffs; results were compared.ResultsOf the 552 unique patient samples centrally retested with local HER2-negative results recorded, tumor samples from 22 (4.0%) patients were determined to be HER2-positive (95% confidence interval [CI] = 2.5%-5.7%). Of these, 18 had been tested locally by only one testing methodology; 15 of 18 were HER2-positive after the central retesting, based on the testing methodology not performed locally. Compared with the 530 patients with centrally confirmed HER2-negative tumors, the 22 patients with centrally determined HER2-positive tumors were younger (median age 56.5 versus 60.0 years) and more likely to have ER/PR-negative tumors (27.3% versus 22.3%). These patients also had shorter median progression-free survival (6.4 months [95% CI = 3.8-15.9 months] versus 9.1 months [95% CI = 8.3-10.3 months]) and overall survival (25.9 months [95% CI = 13.8-not estimable] versus 27.9 months [95% CI = 25.0-32.9 months]).ConclusionsThis study highlights the limitations of employing just one HER2 testing methodology in current clinical practice. It identifies a cohort of patients who did not receive potentially efficacious therapy because their tumor HER2-positivity was not determined by the test initially used. Because of inherent limitations in testing methodologies, it is inadvisable to rely on a single test to rule out potential benefit from HER2-targeted therapy
Constraints on Type Ia Supernova Progenitor Companions from Early Ultraviolet Observations with Swift
We compare early ultraviolet (UV) observations of Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia)
with theoretical predictions for the brightness of the shock associated with
the collision between SN ejecta and a companion star. Our simple method is
independent of the intrinsic flux from the SN and treats the flux observed with
the Swift/Ultra-Violet Optical Telescope (UVOT) as conservative upper limits on
the shock brightness. Comparing this limit with the predicted flux for various
shock models, we constrain the geometry of the SN progenitor-companion system.
We find the model of a 1 M_sun red supergiant companion in Roche lobe overflow
to be excluded at a 95% confidence level for most individual SNe for all but
the most unfavorable viewing angles. For the sample of 12 SNe taken together,
the upper limits on the viewing angle are inconsistent with the expected
distribution of viewing angles for RG stars as the majority of companions with
high confidence. The separation distance constraints do allow MS companions. A
better understanding of the UV flux arising from the SN itself as well as
continued UV observations of young SNe Ia will further constrain the possible
progenitors of SNe Ia.Comment: accepted versio

Robustness of Equations Under Operational Extensions
Sound behavioral equations on open terms may become unsound after
conservative extensions of the underlying operational semantics. Providing
criteria under which such equations are preserved is extremely useful; in
particular, it can avoid the need to repeat proofs when extending the specified
language.
This paper investigates preservation of sound equations for several notions
of bisimilarity on open terms: closed-instance (ci-)bisimilarity and
formal-hypothesis (fh-)bisimilarity, both due to Robert de Simone, and
hypothesis-preserving (hp-)bisimilarity, due to Arend Rensink. For both
fh-bisimilarity and hp-bisimilarity, we prove that arbitrary sound equations on
open terms are preserved by all disjoint extensions which do not add labels. We
also define slight variations of fh- and hp-bisimilarity such that all sound
equations are preserved by arbitrary disjoint extensions. Finally, we give two
sets of syntactic criteria (on equations, resp. operational extensions) and

Impacts of elevated atmospheric COâ‚‚ on nutrient content of important food crops.
One of the many ways that climate change may affect human health is by altering the nutrient content of food crops. However, previous attempts to study the effects of increased atmospheric CO2 on crop nutrition have been limited by small sample sizes and/or artificial growing conditions. Here we present data from a meta-analysis of the nutritional contents of the edible portions of 41 cultivars of six major crop species grown using free-air CO2 enrichment (FACE) technology to expose crops to ambient and elevated CO2 concentrations in otherwise normal field cultivation conditions. This data, collected across three continents, represents over ten times more data on the nutrient content of crops grown in FACE experiments than was previously available. We expect it to be deeply useful to future studies, such as efforts to understand the impacts of elevated atmospheric CO2 on crop macro- and micronutrient concentrations, or attempts to alleviate harmful effects of these changes for the billions of people who depend on these crops for essential nutrients
