    One of the major goals for a general contractor during construction is to make a profit and for the owner, get the project built for the lowest amount possible. Just as general contractors have been opening self-performing divisions within their own company, owners are capable of self-performing certain aspects of a construction job as well. Owners have shown the capability to operate the project management aspect of construction in order to keep control of factors that are important to the owner and then form a joint venture or subcontract the entire construction management aspect of the project. The project management aspect includes bid leveling, project buyout, scheduling, procurement, submittal and document management and direct communication between the architect, engineers, and subcontractors. Using this owner-incorporated structure, the owner is in more control of operations and has more oversight throughout the project, but in return they take on more risk with the added responsibility in regard to financials and building out the project correctly. In this research, owners can be thought of as developers and are constantly in the market for acquiring land in order to build a new project in hopes of making a profit

    Multifrequency synthetic aperture radar antenna comparison study

    Three multifrequency, dual polarization SAR antenna designs are reviewed. The SAR antenna design specifications were for a "straw man' SAR which would approximate the requirements for projected shuttle-based SAR's. Therefore, the physical dimensions were constrained to be compatible with the space shuttle. The electrical specifications were similar to those of SIR-A and SIR-B with the addition of dual polarization and the addition of C and X band operation. Early in the antenna design considerations, three candidate technologies emerged as having promise. They were: (1) microstrip patch planar array antennas, (2) slotted waveguide planar array antennas, and (3) open-ended waveguide planar array antennas

    Title[j1] : Gender and stress related effects on cardiovascular health outcomes Authors: Michael Cedeño – Master’s, (Tarleton State University), Jennifer Blevins-McNaughton (Tarleton State University) Background and Purpose: To date, only a few investigators have compared the effect that stress may have on health and metabolic outcomes in college age adults. The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which gender may play a role in self-reported stress and cardiovascular and metabolic outcomes in college age students. Methods: Thirty-eight (N = 38) adults ages 18 to 28 participated in this study. Height, weight, supine resting heart rate and supine blood pressure were measured. Subjects completed the Institute of HeartMath® Stress and Well-Being Survey™ to measure psychological stressors, total stress score, total well-being, and emotional vitality. Total blood cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides, TC/HDL ratio, and glucose were measured in a randomly selected subset of 13 subjects (N = 13; 7 females and 6 males) using the Cholestech LDX®. Independent t-test and Pearson correlations were used to analyze differences between male and female responses. Results: Males reported significantly higher systolic (P \u3c 0.05) and diastolic (P \u3c 0.05) blood pressures than females as well as glucose levels (P \u3c 0.01). Males also reported higher amounts of work related stress (P \u3c 0.01). Conclusion: This preliminary investigation revealed that college age males reported significantly higher systolic and diastolic blood pressures as well as glucose levels than their female counterparts. Females had significantly higher HDL than males, but this is common in college age adults. There were no significant differences regarding stress components, cardiovascular or metabolic health outcomes and gender. Stress components such as work and finances were shown to correlate with systolic and diastolic blood pressure in both genders, but a larger sample size is needed to find a relationship. [j1

    On the galloping instability of two-dimensional bodies having elliptical cross sections.

    Galloping, also known as Den Hartog instability, is the large amplitude, low frequency oscillation of a structure in the direction transverse to the mean wind direction. It normally appears in the case of bodies with small stiffness and structural damping, when they are placed in a flow provided the incident velocity is high enough. Galloping depends on the slope of the lift coefficient versus angle of attack curve, which must be negative. Generally speaking this implies that the body is stalled after boundary layer separation, which, as it is known in non-wedged bodies, is a Reynolds number dependent phenomenon. Wind tunnel experiments have been conducted aiming at establishing the characteristics of the galloping motion of elliptical cross-section bodies when subjected to a uniform flow, the angles of attack ranging from 0° to 90°. The results have been summarized in stability maps, both in the angle of attack versus relative thickness and in the angle of attack versus Reynolds number planes, where galloping instability regions are identified

    Introducing First Year Medical Students to Personalized Medicine Concepts in a Small Group Activity

    Presented as a Poster Presentation at 2020 IUSM Education Day.An individuals’ genetic profile is becomingly an increasingly important parameter in healthcare decisions. This small group activity was developed to introduce first year medical students in the Molecules to Cells and Tissues course to the concept and significance of Pharmacogenomics and personalized medicine. Additionally, this activity provided students with an opportunity to work with a large dataset and use the information to impact clinical decision making. This activity has two cases, takes student groups approximately 2 hours to complete, and requires internet access. Case materials are available through the learning management system Canvas, and include open-ended questions to guide students through the cases. In these cases students explore the functional significance of different alleles of a panel of cytochrome P450 genes. The group activity has the students examine a large data set of cytochrome P450 genes and cognate alleles to determine their prevalence in the local population and calculate the individuals’ gene scores. The students are then asked to explain the impact of the genotype (or gene score) on the resulting patient phenotype (i.e. the functional significance of the genotype). The first case involves a breast cancer survivor support group in which patients taking Taxol discuss lack of adequate pain relief from opioids and the potential impact of concomitant use of natural compounds/supplements on drug metabolism. The second case involves a patient presenting with recurrent stroke-like symptoms despite being on the anticoagulant medication clopidogrel. The patient is initially suspected to be non-compliant, but is later determined to be a poor metabolizer of the anticoagulant clopidogrelto its active form thus decreasing its efficacy. The expertise of the IUSM Medical Genetics research faculty was leveraged to provide a large data set of cytochrome P450 genes and cognate alleles. The selection of cytochrome P450 was based upon delivering content focused on the biochemistry of the enzyme system and provided an opportunity to highlight the drug interaction database available through IUSM Clinical Pharmacology (The FlockhartTable™ ; https://drug-interactions.medicine.iu.edu/). The addition of natural compounds was to draw students’ attention to the Natural Medicines database, which is the recommended source for evidence-based data on complementary and alternative medicine. Natural Medicines is available through the Ruth Lilly Medical Library and can be searched by substance or condition. It provides both a summary of the literature available on substances as well as the level of evidence or quality of studies done on the substance

    NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) is well known for its contributions to large ascent propulsion systems such as the Saturn V and the Space Shuttle. This paper highlights a lesser known but equally rich side of MSFC - its heritage in spacecraft chemical propulsion systems and its current capabilities for in-space propulsion system development and chemical propulsion research. The historical narrative describes the efforts associated with developing upper-stage main propulsion systems such as the Saturn S-IVB as well as orbital maneuvering and reaction control systems such as the S-IVB auxiliary propulsion system, the Skylab thruster attitude control system, and many more recent activities such as Chandra, the Demonstration of Automated Rendezvous Technology, X-37, the X-38 de-orbit propulsion system, the Interim Control Module, the US Propulsion Module, and several technology development activities. Also discussed are MSFC chemical propulsion research capabilities, along with near- and long-term technology challenges to which MSFC research and system development competencies are relevant
