Disability and participation in breast and bowel cancer screening in England: a large prospective study.

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: There is limited information about participation in organised population-wide screening programmes by people with disabilities. METHODS: Data from the National Health Service routine screening programmes in England were linked to information on disability reported by the Million Women Study cohort participants. RESULTS: Of the 473 185 women offered routine breast or bowel cancer screening, 23% reported some disability. Women with disabilities were less likely than other women to participate in breast cancer screening (RR=0.64, 95% CI: 0.62-0.65) and in bowel cancer screening (RR=0.75, 0.73-0.76). Difficulties with self-care or vision were associated with the greatest reduction in screening participation. CONCLUSION: Participation in routine cancer screening programmes in England is reduced in people with disabilities and participation varies by type of disability

Bottom baryons decaying to a J/ψ meson and a hyperon are reconstructed using 1.0  fb-1 of data collected in 2011 with the LHCb detector. Significant Λb0→J/ψΛ, Ξb-→J/ψΞ- and Ωb-→J/ψΩ- signals are observed and the corresponding masses are measured to be M(Λb0)=5619.53±0.13(stat.)±0.45(syst.)  MeV/c2, M(Ξb-)=5795.8±0.9(stat.)±0.4(syst.)  MeV/c2, M(Ωb-)=6046.0±2.2(stat.)±0.5(syst.)  MeV/c2, while the differences with respect to the Λb0 mass are M(Ξb-)-M(Λb0)=176.2±0.9(stat.)±0.1(syst.)  MeV/c2, M(Ωb-)-M(Λb0)=426.4±2.2(stat.)±0.4(syst.)  MeV/c2. These are the most precise mass measurements of the Λb0, Ξb- and Ωb- baryons to date. Averaging the above Λb0 mass measurement with that published by LHCb using 35  pb-1 of data collected in 2010 yields M(Λb0)=5619.44±0.13(stat.)±0.38(syst.)  MeV/c2

Effect of false set related anomalies on rheological properties of cement paste mixtures in the presence of high range water reducing admixture

    No full text
There are many studies related to the fresh state properties of the cementitious systems in the literature. However, there is no specific study about the effects of false set formation on fresh state properties of these systems. in this study, the effect of false set formation on fresh state and rheological properties of the cement paste mixtures containing high range water reducing (HRWR) admixture was investigated experimentally. For this aim, two different commercial CEMI 42.5 R. type cements produced by different companies were used. in order to investigate the effect of false set formation related anomalies on fresh state properties, paste mixtures were prepared with different mixing times. in the mixtures where false set related anomaly was the case, rheological properties were positively affected by prolonging the mixing time.Turkish Cement Manufacturers AssociationTurkish Cement Manufacturers Associatio

Evidence for anisotropy of cosmic acceleration

Observations reveal a “bulk flow” in the local Universe which is faster and extends to much larger scales than are expected around a typical observer in the standard ΛCDM cosmology. This is expected to result in a scale-dependent dipolar modulation of the acceleration of the expansion rate inferred from observations of objects within the bulk flow. From a maximum-likelihood analysis of the Joint Light-curve Analysis catalogue of Type Ia supernovae, we find that the deceleration parameter, in addition to a small monopole, indeed has a much bigger dipole component aligned with the cosmic microwave background dipole, which falls exponentially with redshift z: q0 = qm + qd.n̂ exp(-z/S). The best fit to data yields qd = −8.03 and S = 0.0262 (⇒d ∌ 100 Mpc), rejecting isotropy (qd = 0) with 3.9σ statistical significance, while qm = −0.157 and consistent with no acceleration (qm = 0) at 1.4σ. Thus the cosmic acceleration deduced from supernovae may be an artefact of our being non-Copernican observers, rather than evidence for a dominant component of “dark energy” in the Universe
