    A synthesis of palynological data from the Lower Permian Cerro Pelado Formation (Parana Basin, Uruguay): A record of warmer climate stages during Gondwana glaciations

    This paper presents a synthesis of the palynological record in the Cerro Pelado Formation deposits (Lower Permian, Paraná basin, Cerro Largo Department, north-eastern Uruguay) based on pre-existing data and new findings. The successions studied in this formation consist mainly of non-marine to glacial-marine mudstones and sandy mudstones. The palynological assemblages yielded by 32 samples collected from two outcrops and thirty borehole samples demonstrate that not significant floral changes took place through the considered stratigraphic range. The correlation of these assemblages with biostratigraphic palynozones, proposed previously for the Paraná/Chacoparaná Basin of Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay point to their Early Permian age. The most widespread spore genera in these assemblages are Punctatisporites, Lundbladispora, Vallatisporites and Granulatisporites. Among pollen grains, Caheniasaccites, Vittatina, Potonieisporites, Protohaploxypinus and Plicatipollenites are the most representative. Palynomorphs assigned to Chlorophyta, Prasinophyta, and acritarchs indicate the development of brackish to fresh water lacustrine environments. The results from the facies and palynological analyses suggest that these deposits were formed during interglacial or postglacial warmer climatic episodes. This fact would agree well with the proposal that Gondwana glaciations were characterized by discrete glacial phases (with multiple glacial lobe advance-retreat phases) alternating with warmer climatic episodes. These episodes could be recognized thanks to sub-glacial and melt water related continental deposits that would bear characteristic palynological assemblages, like the recorded in the Cerro Pelado Fm. successions

    Micro ad-hoc Health Social Networks (uHSN). Design and evaluation of a social-based solution for patient support

    Objective: To contribute the design, development, and assessment of a new concept: Micro ad hoc Health Social Networks (uHSN), to create a social-based solution for supporting patients with chronic disease. Design: After in-depth fieldwork and intensive co-design over a 4-year project following Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR), this paper contributes a new paradigm of uHSN, defining two interaction areas (the “backstage” the sphere invisible to the final user, where processes that build services take place; and the “onstage” the visible part that includes the patients and relatives), and describes a new transversal concept, i.e., “network spaces segments, ” to provide timely interaction among all involved profiles and guaranteeing qualitative relationships. This proposal is applicable to any service design project and to all types of work areas; in the present work, it served as a social-based solution for supporting patients with chronic disease in two real-life health scenarios: a Parkinson disease patient association and a Stroke rehabilitation service in a hospital. These two scenarios included the following main features: thematic (related to the specific disease), private, and secure (only for the patient, relatives, healthcare professional, therapist, carer), with defined specific objectives (around patient support), small size (from tens to hundreds of users), ability to integrate innovative services (e.g., connection to hospital information service or to health sensors), supported by local therapeutic associations, and clustered with preconfigured relationships among users based in network groups. Measurements: Using a mixed qualitative and quantitative approach for 6 months, the performance of the uHSN was assessed in the two environments: a hospital rehabilitation unit working with Stroke patients, and a Parkinson disease association providing physiotherapy, occupational therapy, psychological support, speech therapy, and social services. We describe the proposed methods for evaluating the uHSN quantitatively and qualitatively, and how the scientific community can replicate and/or integrate this contribution in its research. Results: The uHSN overcomes the main limitations of traditional HSNs in the main areas recommended in the literature: privacy, security, transparency, system ecology, Quality of Service (QoS), and technology enhancement. The qualitative and quantitative research demonstrated its viability and replicability in four key points: user acceptance, productivity improvement, QoS enhancement, and fostering of social relations. It also meets the expectation of connecting health and social worlds, supporting distance rehabilitation, improving professionals’ efficiency, expanding users’ social capital, improving information quality and immediacy, and enhancing perceived peer/social/emotional support. The scientific contributions of the present paper are the first step not only in customizing health solutions that empower patients, their families, and healthcare professionals, but also in transferring this new paradigm to other scientific, professional, and social environments to create new opportunities

    Necrotoxigenic Escherichia coli from sheep and goats produce a new type of cytotoxic necrotizing factor (CNF3) associated with the eae and ehxA genes

    Fecal samples from sheep and goats were screened by tissue-culture assays and PCR for the presence of necrotoxigenic Escherichia coli (NTEC) producing cytotoxic necrotizing factors (CNFs). Of the 18 NTEC strains assayed, four were positive for the cnf1 gene while 14 strains were negative for the cnf1 and cnf2 genes. All of the NTEC strains had the eae gene and most of them also carried the ehxA gene. Moreover, all the cnf1– cnf2– NTEC strains were negative for several virulence markers associated with CNF1+ or CNF2+ strains. The cnf gene present in one of these strains was sequenced and analysis of the gene product revealed a new type of CNF, which was named CNF3 (and the coding gene cnf3). Oligonucleotide primers were designed to PCR-amplify a fragment of cnf3. The results showed that all strains examined in this study, except one cnf1+strain, were cnf3+. The association of cnf3 with eae and ehxA suggests that cnf3+ NTEC strains might be pathogenic for humans. [Int Microbiol 2007; 10(1):47-55

In this review the contributions accumulated over the last decades to this field, are summarized. Particular emphasis is placed on ethyl carbamate formation, its precursors and the analytical methods used for its identification and quantification.La formación e identificación del carbamato de etilo ha conducido a numerosos estudios para entender mejor su formación y su posterior identificación y cuantificación. En esta revisión sintetizamos lo que ha sido aportado en la literatura que se ha publicado en este tema en las últimas décadas.
