    Get PDF

Underestimating the Gender Gap? An Exploratory Two-Step Cluster Analysis of STEM Labor Segmentation and Its Impact on Women

    Get PDF
Gender inequality in science and technology fields takes various and complex shapes, from recruitment and retention across educational levels, to job entry and advancement barriers, to pay and compensation. Although the salary gap for women in these fields is well documented, much of the relevant research has relied exclusively on mean earned wages to estimate compensation differentials by gender. This approach may underestimate the actual extent of the gender gap more than if more comprehensive measures of compensation (e.g., wages along with health insurance and retirement benefits) were used. Through a two-step cluster analysis of the 2008–2010 US Census Survey of Income and Program Participation, in this study I considered wages along with access to employer-provided health and pension benefits, as well as job characteristics such as union membership, part-time employment, and access to employer-provided training, to explore labor segmentation in the science and technology workforce. The findings reveal a pattern consistent with labor segmentation, including the presence of clusters with secondary employment characteristics (i.e., low wages, part-time employment, and lack of health insurance and pension benefits). Significantly, women were overrepresented in such clusters, as well as in part-time and contingent work arrangements more generally. The findings both support and complicate the evidence from prior research on the gender gap by illustrating the cumulative impact that measures of total compensation can have in assessing the true extent of compensation disparities between men and women and by highlighting the stratification of highly skilled labor in the new economy

The aim ofthe study was to evaluate the immediate effect of Dynamic Tape® bandage on the externaltibial torsion, clinically painful, and the contractile properties of the superficial muscles involved in a soccer player. The subject presented external tibial torsion with painful symptoms in the right lower extremity. Thigh-foot angle and the contractile properties ofthe superficial musculature by tensiomyography in both legs and perceived pain were measured. Dynamic Tape® bandage was applied for 10 days. A decrease in the thigh-foot angle of the right lower extremity and a 55% reduction in pain knee was observed. The stressed muscle showed a reduction of muscle activation while the weakened muscles increased muscle activation. In conclusion, in the case studied, the Dynamic Tape® can be considered a very effective complementary therapeutic tool to reduce external tibial torsion, clinically painful.O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar o efeito imediato da bandagem Dynamic Tape® sobre a entorse tibial externa, com dor, em um jogador de futebol e as propriedades contráteis dos músculos superficiais envolvidos. In this essay, we consider the “petty” managerial technologies of audit and surveillance that shape the lives of Mexican faculty and introduce the term bioaccountability to refer to the growing use of biometric control mechanisms implemented around the world to monitor faculty activities and performance. We draw on personal experience at three Mexican public universities to illustrate the chilling impact of encroaching (bio)accountability policies on academic culture, including the gradual erosion of academic freedom

An Approach for the Customized High-Dimensional Segmentation of Remote Sensing Hyperspectral Images

    Get PDF
Abstract: This paper addresses three problems in the field of hyperspectral image segmentation: the fact that the way an image must be segmented is related to what the user requires and the application; the lack and cost of appropriately labeled reference images; and, finally, the information loss problem that arises in many algorithms when high dimensional images are projected onto lower dimensional spaces before starting the segmentation process. To address these issues, the Multi-Gradient based Cellular Automaton (MGCA) structure is proposed to segment multidimensional images without projecting them to lower dimensional spaces. The MGCA structure is coupled with an evolutionary algorithm (ECAS-II) in order to produce the transition rule sets required by MGCA segmenters. These sets are customized to specific segmentation needs as a function of a set of low dimensional training images in which the user expresses his segmentation requirements. Constructing high dimensional image segmenters from low dimensional training sets alleviates the problem of lack of labeled training images. These can be generated online based on a parametrization of the desired segmentation extracted from a set of examples. The strategy has been tested in experiments carried out using synthetic and real hyperspectral images, and it has been compared to state-of-the-art segmentation approaches over benchmark images in the area of remote sensing hyperspectral imaging.Ministerio de Economía y competitividad; TIN2015-63646-C5-1-RMinisterio de Economía y competitividad; RTI2018-101114-B-I00Xunta de Galicia: ED431C 2017/1

Shifting Positionalities Across International Locations: Embodied Knowledge, Time-Geography, and the Polyvalence of Privilege

    Get PDF
Despite a robust body of scholarship on positionality, the practice of international higher education research often neglects engagement with the varied, fluid, and complex positionalities of researchers across national boundaries. Through a series of vignettes, the authors argue for reflexivity that extends beyond rigid social identities and towards embodied knowledge, or selfunderstanding that is mutable and context-responsive. For international mobile researchers especially, new affinities can evolve through propinquity and social custom, and gradually become incorporated into self-knowledge with the passing of time. Beyond mere cultural competency, this article raises the importance of symbolic competency that simultaneously negotiates the multiple dimensions of language, various forms of capital, as well as evolving social identities in conducting research in different contexts

This article analyzes the importance of the family in the psychological development of children. Within the family, values, a particular vision of the world, and a system of beliefs and rules are formed; all of this within a determined cultural pattern. The convenience of studying the ideas and beliefs that couples have about raising and educating children is emphasized, given that these beliefs determine the practices of upbringing children. The beliefs on upbringing and the education given to kids are analyzed on pregnant women from Seville in their third trimester of pregnancy. The parent’s ideas survey was used to find out that most of the interviewees had information about raising children. However, there was a variation in the attributes of children’s conduct, which is discussed in terms of the influence of the culture, education level, age, etc. of the mothers
