The relationship between Cognitive Reserve and Math Abilities

Cognitive Reserve is the capital of knowledge and experiences that an individual acquires over their life-span. Cognitive Reserve is strictly related to Brain Reserve, which is the ability of the brain to cope with damage. These two concepts could explain many phenomena such as the modality of onset in dementia or the different degree of impairment in cognitive abilities in aging. The aim of this study is to verify the effect of Cognitive Reserve, as measured by a questionnaire, on a variety of numerical abilities (number comprehension, reading and writing numbers, rules and principles, mental calculations and written calculations), in a group of healthy older people (aged 65-98 years). Sixty older individuals were interviewed with the Cognitive Reserve Index questionnaire (CRIq), and assessed with the Numerical Activities of Daily Living battery (NADL), which included formal tasks on math abilities, an informal test on math, one interview with the participant, and one interview with a relative on the perceived math abilities. We also took into account the years of education, as another proxy for Cognitive Reserve. In the multiple regression analyses on all formal tests, CRIq scores did not significantly predict math performance. Other variables, i.e., years of education and Mini-Mental State Examination score, accounted better for math performance on NADL. Only a subsection of CRIq, CRIq-Working-activity, was found to predict performance on a NADL subtest assessing informal use of math in daily life. These results show that education might better explain abstract math functions in late life than other aspects related to Cognitive Reserve, such as lifestyle or occupational attainment

Cristianos antifascistas. ¿Un oxímoron para los socialistas?

Las relaciones entre católicos y socialistas en Argentina estuvieron marcadas desde un principio por fuertes tensiones y rispideces. Desde fines del siglo XIX, los ataques cruzados entre el Partido Socialista y la Iglesia Católica condicionaron desde lo institucional las posibilidades de acercamiento entre sus miembros en diferentes ámbitos de la vida pública. La adopción por parte de un sector católico de la prédica condenatoria al fascismo supuso un desafío durante el período de entreguerras a los marcos de interpretación que los socialistas habían construido sobre la Iglesia y el mundo católico desde la perspectiva de su afán anticlerical. El presente texto intenta recorrer desde los textos de personalidades como Arturo Orgaz, Eugenia Silveyra de Oyuela o Guillermo Korn algunas de las diferentes posturas que se suscitaron ante el hecho novedoso de verse entremezclados católicos y socialistas en el heterogéneo campo del antifascismo.Since their beginnings, the relations between Catholics and Socialists in Argentina were signed by conflicts and disagreement. The crossfire between the Catholic Church and the Socialist Party conditioned any possibility of approach between their members in different circles of public life. During the interwar period the non-fascist posture of a group of Catholics challenged the ways that socialists understood the Catholic world, and that they had inherited from their anticlerical tradition. From the voices of Orgaz, Silveyra de Oyuela and Korn, this paper attempts to analyze the different ways these actors dealt with the situation of converging in the antifascism field.Fil: Bisso, Andres. p73 as a Pharmaceutical Target for Cancer Therapy

About half of all human tumors contain an inactivating mutation of p53, while in the remaining tumors, the p53 pathway is frequently abrogated by alterations of other components of its signaling pathway. In humans, the p53 tumor suppressor is part of a small gene family that includes two other members, p73 and p63, structurally and functionally related to p53. Accumulating evidences indicate that all p53-family proteins function as molecular hubs of a highly interconnected signaling network that coordinates cell proliferation, differentiation and death in response to physiological inputs and oncogenic stress. Therefore, not only the p53-pathway but the entire “p53-family pathway” is a primary target for cancer drug development. In particular, the p53-related protein p73 has a crucial role in determining cellular responses to chemotherapy, and can vicariate p53 functions in triggering cell death after DNA damage in multiple experimental models. The biology and regulation of p73 is complex, since the TP73 gene incorporates both tumor-suppressive and proto-oncogenic functions. However, the p73 gene is rarely mutated in tumors, so appropriate pharmacological manipulation of the p73 pathway is a very promising approach for cancer therapy. Here we provide an overview of the principal mechanism of p73 regulation, and describe several examples of pharmacological tools that can induce p73 accumulation and function by acting on upstream p73 modulators or displacing inhibitory p73 interactors. A better understanding of how the p73 pathway works is mandatory to discover additional players intervening in this pathway and has important implications for the improvement of cancer treatment with the development of new molecules or with the reposition of currently available drugs
