Features Selection Algorithms for Classification of Voice Signals

    Get PDF
In data mining problems, the high dimensionality of the input features can affect the performance of the process. In this way, the features selection methods appear as a solution to the problems encountered when analyzing databases with large dimensions. This article presents the implementation of the Pearson's linear correlation, ReliefF, Welch's t-test and multilinear regression based algorithms with forwards selection and backward elimination direction for the selection of acoustic features for the task of voice pathologies identification. The best set of selected features improved the accuracy and F1-score from 83% to 92% (9 points of percentage), using the ReliefF algorithm. This work has been supported by FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia within the Project Scope: UIDB/05757/2020.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Underwater survey of ichthyofauna of eastern Atlantic seamounts: Gettysburg and Ormond (Gorringe Bank)

Gettysburg and Ormond are seamounts belonging to the Gorringe Bank, which is located on the Europen-African plate boundary. Given the importance of these oceanic features for understanding marine biodiversity patterns, two surveys were carried out in 1998 (Gettysburg) and 1999 (Ormond) using diving, photography and video for species identification and abundance evaluation. Of the 9 fish species found at Gettysburg and 11 at Ormond, 6 were common to both sites and these included the dominant species: the oceanic and commercially important, Seriola rivoliana, and the coastal, typically Atlantic-Mediterranean Coris julis and Anthias anthias. The strong representation of coastal, demersal and Atlantic-Mediterranean species in the Gorringe Bank region and the presence of Abudefduf luridus, an endemic Macaronesian species, at Gettysburg suggests that the upper part of these seamounts may have acted and still act as “stepping stones” for the dispersal of coastal species.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

O Eco de um Passado Primordial

    Get PDF
The Echo of a Primordial Past arises from a concern transformed into the desire to know who we are, what we do here and where we are going. At a time when the path to follow is sometimes so cloudy, it is important to stop, look back and reflect. Thus, in the search for what may be the essence of Man, his creations and, consequently, architecture, our look is directed to an original period, where our species takes its first steps, reacts to its most natural instincts and begins walking a path of discovery and conquest that never stopped for some time. We have, then, the past as a (design) tool that should not induce us to stagnate in those times of yore, but rather motivate us to rediscover and reinterpret our present time and that which is to come. That is why it is important to recognize the constants, that which has been present since the beginning and which has never abandoned us and will never abandon us. More than forms, we find there a permanent posture towards the world, an eternal desire and an eternal need to organize the space around us, able to unite the public and the private, the community and the intimacy, the temple and the house. Wandering through this vastness, between the forms and the ideas that motivate them, between nearby and distant territories, between research and practice, between history and the current state of the discipline, we explore the timelessness and universality of architecture, and we define an imaginary that, consciously or unconsciously, ends up being inevitably present in all architectural practice

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is considered one of the most disabling diseases and it has a high prevalence in developed countries. It is as well the most common cause of dementia and it affects particularly the elderly. The current AD diagnosis accuracy is relatively low. It is therefore necessary to optimize the methods for AD detection. The electroencephalogram (EEG) is an inexpensive and noninvasive technique, that is able to record the electromagnetic fields produced by the brain activity. It has shown in the recent past a growing quality of the contribution to show brain disorders. The aim of this study was to evaluate the individual and combined power of several EEG features in AD discrimination. 95.00% of sensitivity, 100.00% of specificity, 97.06% of accuracy and 0.98 of AUC were the best classification results obtained in this work

Ichthyofauna assemblages from two unexplored Atlantic seamounts: Northwest Bank and João Valente Bank (Cape Verde archipelago)

Underwater censuses by divers were used to study the fish assemblages from two unexplored Atlantic seamounts in the Cape Verde archipelago. Fifty three species of 27 families were recorded: 27 in Northwest Bank and 46 in João Valente Bank. Northwest Bank had dense schools, while João Valente Bank had higher species richness and smaller schools. Both seamounts were dominated mainly by coastal species directly depending on seabed habitat (Demersal or benthopelagic). Of the 53 fish species recorded, 22.6% were of continental African origin, while 9.4% and 5.7% were endemic of the Cape Verde Islands and of the Macaronesia province, respectively. Most species (64.2%) had a very wide biogeographic distribution: cosmopolitan (22.6%), amphi-Atlantic (28.3%) and Atlantic-Mediterranean (13.2%). Northwest Bank and João Valente Bank may have a permanent fish community supported by various oceanographic-topographic interactions. João Valente Bank seems more diverse, which is probably associated with algae cover and with a larger area providing additional suitable and more varied habitats. The geographic proximity to the coast and the presence of oceanic and/or oceanodromous species suggests that the upper part of these seamounts may act both as attraction points and as “stepping-stones” for the dispersal of coastal species.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    LARA as a language-independent aspect-oriented programming approach

    Get PDF
Usually, Aspect-Oriented Programming (AOP) languages are an extension of a specific target language (e.g., AspectJ for Java and AspectC++ for C++). This coupling can impose drawbacks such as arbitrary limitations to the aspect language. LARA is a DSL for source-to-source transformations inspired by AOP concepts, and has been designed to be independent of the target language. In this paper we propose techniques to overcome some of the challenges presented by a language-independent approach to source code transformations, and present and discuss possible solutions and their impact. Additionally, we present some of the benefits and opportunities of this approach. We present an evaluation of our approach, show that we can significantly reduce the effort to develop weavers for new target languages and that the proposed techniques contribute to more concise LARA aspects and safer semantics. The present study aimed to report the biological invasion by Thespesia populnea of sites under fluviomarine influence and adjacent environments of the Sergipe River, in Aracaju, Sergipe, Northeastern Brazil, by Thespesia populnea, as well as to evaluate the susceptibility of the occurrence of the species in other Brazilian regions. The study site comprises a mangrove area and adjacent sites of the Sergipe river. The focuses of the invasion by T. populnea were obtained by means of walks throughout the extension of the site (active search). To evaluate the susceptibility of occurrence of the species in Brazil, an ecological niche modeling analysis was performed. The invasion of the species was registered at several points in the study area, with the highest concentrations in the most degraded sites. The results of the model analysis demonstrate high to extremely high susceptibility to the occurrence (biological invasion) of the species in several parts of the country. The attributes of the species, observations in situ and results of the modeling analysis suggest the need to control T. populnea in the study area and prohibition of its planting in the Brazilian territory. Keywords: exotic invasive, modeling analysis, mangrove

Electroencephalogram hybrid method for alzheimer early detection

    Get PDF
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurocognitive illness that leads to dementia and mainly affects the elderly. As the percentage of old people is strongly increasing worldwide, it is urgent to develop contributions to solve this complex problem. The early diagnosis at AD first stage known as Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) needs a better accuracy and there is not a biomarker able to detect AD without invasive tests. In this study, Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals have been used to serve as a way of finding parameters to improve AD diagnosis in first stages. For that, a hybrid method based on a Cepstral analysis of EEG Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) multiband decomposition was developed. Several Cepstral Distances (CD) were extracted to verify the lag between cepstra of conventional bands signals. The results showed that this hybrid method is a good tool for describing and distinguishing the AD EEG activity along its different stages because several statistically significant parameters variations were found between controls, MCI, moderate AD and advanced AD (the lowest p-value=0.003<0.05).info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
