    It turns out the Armoire is your mother: Narratives of addiction in two cable television organization programs

    Addiction Research & Theory, 14(2): pp. 139-157.An ideological analysis was conducted of two cable television programs which offer strategies on how to organize the “stuff” accumulated by individuals: Clean Sweep, which airs on the TLC cable channel, and Clean House, which airs on the Style cable channel. Both programs send in energetic team of experts to help couples identify and dispose of items that they believe (and the couples agree) are negatively impacting their lives. The assumption emerging from these programs is that the unbridled passion of the guests for accumulation – of collectibles, and of just plain “stuff” – has begun to damage their lives. Rather than simply help these individuals get rid of what they no longer need, these programs sustain an ideology that suggests that the individuals who appear on these programs are addicts, desperately in need of a nationally televised intervention

    Factors Associated with Breastfeeding Duration and Satisfaction after Gestational Diabetes among Women Living in Northwest Ohio

    Background: Given the potential for type 2 diabetes and the protective benefits of breastfeeding after gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), there is a need to promote and support breastfeeding; however, delayed lactogenesis and postpartum experiences may challenge breastfeeding success. We aimed to describe factors that influence breastfeeding duration and satisfaction after GDM.Methods: A cross-sectional survey, informed by an elicitation phase and subject matter expert review, was conducted to evaluate factors associated with breastfeeding satisfaction and duration after GDM. The study included women (n = 50) from Northwest Ohio who delivered a living child from a singleton pregnancy at greater than or equal to 34 weeks gestation, who intended to breastfeed after GDM. Spearman correlation and Mann-Whitney U test were calculated to evaluate factors associated with breastfeeding duration and satisfaction.Results: Women described a lack of breastfeeding support, and there appeared to be a lack of awareness on the benefits of breastfeeding after GDM. Attitudes were associated with breastfeeding duration and satisfaction. Negative experiences in the child’s first week of life were associated with shorter duration and lower level of satisfaction. Delayed lactogenesis, barriers after delivery, and negative normative influences were significantly associated with a lower level of breastfeeding satisfaction.Conclusion: More work is needed to deliver breastfeeding education and support after GDM. Interventions tailored for GDM are recommended to promote positive breastfeeding beliefs and realistic breastfeeding expectations. Ongoing support to address early experiences and barriers after GDM is recommended. Further work should examine these factors in a larger, more diverse sample

    Scotland observed an unusual influenza A(H3N2)- dominated 2017/18 influenza season with healthcare services under significant pressure. We report the application of the moving epidemic method (MEM) to virology data as a tool to predict the influenza peak activity period and peak week of swab positivity in the current season. This novel MEM application has been successful locally and is believed to be of potential use to other countries for healthcare planning and building wider community resilience

    High Redshift AGN: Accretion Rates and Morphologies for X-ray and Radio SC4K Sources from z~2 to z~6

    We study a large sample of ~4000 Lyα Emitters (LAEs) and identify the active galactic nuclei (AGN) among them in order to characterise their evolution across cosmic time. This work was carried out using the SC4K survey (Sobral et al. 2018) and data collected by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), Chandra X-ray Observatory and the Very Large Array (VLA). We find 322 X-ray or radio detected AGN within the sample, constituting 8.7±0.5% of the sources considered. We find that the vast majority of classifiable AGN (81±3%) are point-like or compact sources in the rest-frame UV seen with HST, and this qualitative trend holds regardless of detection band or redshift. These AGN have a range of black hole accretion rates (BHARs), and we present the first direct comparison between radio and X-ray BHARs. X-ray calculated BHARs range from ~0.07 M⊙/yr to ~23 M⊙/yr, indicating a highly varied sample, with some very active AGN detected. Radio calculated BHARs range from ~0.09 M⊙/yr to ~8.8 M⊙/yr, broadly tracing the same range as the X-ray calculated BHARs. X-ray calculated BHARs peak at z~3 and both radio and X-ray calculated BHARs increase with increasing redshift, plateauing at z~4. We find significantly less variation in radio BHARs when compared to X-ray BHARs, indicating radio may be a far more stable and reliable method of calculating the BHARs of AGN over large timescales, while X-ray is more suitable for instantaneous BHARs

    Inverse problem of photoelastic fringe mapping using neural networks

    This paper presents an enhanced technique for inverse analysis of photoelastic fringes using neural networks to determine the applied load. The technique may be useful in whole-field analysis of photoelastic images obtained due to external loading, which may find application in a variety of specialized areas including robotics and biomedical engineering. The presented technique is easy to implement, does not require much computation and can cope well within slight experimental variations. The technique requires image acquisition, filtering and data extraction, which is then fed to the neural network to provide load as output. This technique can be efficiently implemented for determining the applied load in applications where repeated loading is one of the main considerations. The results presented in this paper demonstrate the novelty of this technique to solve the inverse problem from direct image data. It has been shown that the presented technique offers better result for the inverse photoelastic problems than previously published works

    Futsal and Continuous Exercise Induce Similar Changes in Specific Skeletal Muscle Signalling Proteins

    Exercise elicits skeletal-muscle adaptations which are important for improved health outcomes. We compared the effects of a futsal game (FUT) and moderate-intensity continuous exercise (MOD), on the skeletal-muscle protein signalling responses in young, healthy individuals. 16 men undertook an incremental exercise test and a resting muscle biopsy performed >48\u2009h apart. They were then randomly allocated to either FUT (n=12) consisting of 2\u2009x\u200920\u2009min halves, or MOD (n=8) consisting of a work-matched running bout performed at an intensity corresponding to the individual ventilatory threshold 1. Work matching was achieved by means of triaxial accelerometers. Immediately after FUT and MOD, participants underwent a second biopsy to assess exercise-induced changes in protein signalling. Total and phosphorylated protein abundance was assessed via western blotting. Both FUT and MOD altered signalling responses in skeletal muscle. FUT increased total ATF2 protein abundance (p=0.048) and phosphorylation (p=0.029), while no changes occurred with MOD. Both exercise regimes increased ACC phosphorylation (p=0.01) and returned a trend for increased p38MAPK phosphorylation. Futsal may be employed as an alternative to continuous exercise to elicit muscle adaptations which may be associated with improved health outcomes. As only FUT increased ATF2 activation, this protein might be a target of future investigation on exercise-induced signalling

    Same or Different:The Overlap Between Children With Auditory Processing Disorders and Children With Other Developmental Disorders: A Systematic Review

    Objectives: Children diagnosed with auditory processing disorders (APD) experience difficulties in auditory functioning and with memory, attention, language, and reading tasks. However, it is not clear whether the behavioral characteristics of these children are distinctive from the behavioral characteristics of children diagnosed with a different developmental disorder, such as specific language impairment (SLI), dyslexia, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), learning disorder (LD), or autism spectrum disorder. This study describes the performance of children diagnosed with APD, SLI, dyslexia, ADHD, and LD to different outcome measurements. The aim of this study was to determine (1) which characteristics of APD overlap with the characteristics of children with SLI, dyslexia, ADHD, LD, or autism spectrum disorder; and (2) if there are characteristics that distinguish children diagnosed with APD from children diagnosed with other developmental disorders. Design: A systematic review. Six electronic databases (Pubmed, CINAHL, Eric, PsychINFO, Communication & Mass Media Complete, and EMBASE) were searched to find peer-reviewed studies from 1954 to May 2015. The authors included studies reporting behaviors and performance of children with (suspected) APD and children diagnosed with a different developmental disorder (SLI, Dyslexia, ADHD, and LD). Two researchers identified and screened the studies independently. Methodological quality of the included studies was assessed with the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association's levels-of-evidence scheme. Results: In total, 13 studies of which the methodological quality was moderate were included in this systematic review. In five studies, the performance of children diagnosed with APD was compared with the performance of children diagnosed with SLI: in two with children diagnosed with dyslexia, one with children diagnosed with ADHD, and in another one with children diagnosed with LD. Ten of the studies included children who met the criteria for more than one diagnosis. In four studies, there was a comparison made between the performances of children with comorbid disorders. There were no studies found in which the performance of children diagnosed with APD was compared with the performance of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Children diagnosed with APD broadly share the same characteristics as children diagnosed with other developmental disorders, with only minor differences between them. Differences were determined with the auditory and visual Duration Pattern Test, the Children's Auditory Processing Performance Scale questionnaire, and the subtests of the Listening in Spatialized Noise-Sentences test, in which noise is spatially separated from target sentences. However, these differences are not consistent between studies and are not found in comparison to all groups of children with other developmental disorders. Conclusions: Children diagnosed with APD perform equally to children diagnosed with SLI, dyslexia, ADHD, and LD on tests of intelligence, memory or attention, and language tests. Only small differences between groups were found for sensory and perceptual functioning tasks (auditory and visual). In addition, children diagnosed with dyslexia performed poorer in reading tasks compared with children diagnosed with APD. The result is possibly confounded by poor quality of the research studies and the low quality of the used outcome measures. More research with higher scientific rigor is required to better understand the differences and similarities in children with various neurodevelopmental disorders
