    Which Swiss Gnomes Attract Money? Efficiency and Reputation as Performance Drivers of Wealth Management Banks

    Wealth management constitutes an important aspect of today's banking world, but very little is known about what explains the differences among banks in their ability to attract new assets under management. Using a unique panel database of Swiss private banks, we test the hypothesis that the performance of a bank in attracting new money depends on two input factors: skill and reputation. Relatively skilled banks -- that is, banks that are more cost-efficient than predicted by their input factors -- also perform better in attracting net new money. We also find that negative media coverage (such as in the context of fraudulent business practices related to tax evasion) strongly diminishes the future ability to attract assets under management, especially at small banks. The present value of lost profits is 3.35 (0.73) times the median annual net profit of a small (large) bank. Thus, adding to the explicit fines that many Swiss banks had to pay in the course of the U.S. Department of Justice's investigations, there are substantial implicit and reputational costs to banks of having negative media coverage. Investment performance for clients seems not to explain future net new money growth. In sum, these results underscore the importance of trust in money management

    A Systemic Approach to Multi-Party Relationship Modeling

    Socio-economic systems exist in a wide variety of activity domains and are composed of multiple stakeholder groups. These groups pursue objectives which are often entirely motivated from within their local context. Domain specificities in the form of institutional design, for example the deregulation of Public Utility systems, can further fragment this context. Nevertheless, for these systems to be viable, a management subsystem that maintains a holistic view of the system is required. From a Systems perspective, this highlights the need to invest in methods that capture the interactions between the different stakeholders of the system. It is the understanding of the individual interactions that can help piece together a holistic view of the system thereby enabling system level discourse. In this paper we present a modeling technique that models industry interactions as a multi-party value realization process and takes a Systems approach in analyzing them. Every interaction is analyzed both from outside – system as a black box and from within – system as a white box. The design patterns that emerge from this whole/composite view of value realization provide the necessary foundation to analyze the working of multi-stakeholder systems. An explicit specification of these concepts is presented as Regulation Enabling Ontology, REGENT. As an example, we instantiate REGENT for the urban residential electricity market and demonstrate its effectiveness in identifying the requirements for time-based electricity supply systems

    Gamete fertility and ovule number variation in selfed reciprocal F1 hybrid triploid plants are heritable and display epigenetic parent-of-origin effects

    Polyploidy and hybridization play major roles in plant evolution and reproduction. To investigate the reproductive effects of polyploidy and hybridization in Arabidopsis thaliana, we analyzed fertility of reciprocal pairs of F1 hybrid triploids, generated by reciprocally crossing 89 diploid accessions to a tetraploid Ler-0 line. All F1 hybrid triploid genotypes exhibited dramatically reduced ovule fertility, while variation in ovule number per silique was observed across different F1 triploid genotypes. These two reproductive traits were negatively correlated suggesting a trade-off between increased ovule number and ovule fertility. Furthermore, the ovule fertility of the F1 hybrid triploids displayed both hybrid dysgenesis and hybrid advantage (heterosis) effects. Strikingly, both reproductive traits (ovule fertility, ovule number) displayed epigenetic parent-of-origin effects between genetically identical reciprocal F1 hybrid triploid pairs. In some F1 triploid genotypes, the maternal genome excess F1 hybrid triploid was more fertile, whilst for other accessions the paternal genome excess F1 hybrid triploid was more fertile. Male gametogenesis was not significantly disrupted in F1 triploids. Fertility variation in the F1 triploid A.thaliana is mainly the result of disrupted ovule development. Overall, we demonstrate that in F1 triploid plants both ovule fertility and ovule number are subject to parent-of-origin effects that are genome dosage-dependent
