A note on monopole moduli spaces
We discuss the structure of the framed moduli space of Bogomolny monopoles
for arbitrary symmetry breaking and extend the definition of its stratification
to the case of arbitrary compact Lie groups. We show that each stratum is a
union of submanifolds for which we conjecture that the natural metric is
hyperKahler. The dimensions of the strata and of these submanifolds are
calculated, and it is found that for the latter, the dimension is always a
multiple of four.Comment: 17 pages, LaTe

Synthesis and Study of Olefin Metathesis Catalysts Supported by Redox-Switchable Diaminocarbene 3 Ferrocenophanes
A redox-switchable ligand, N,N'-dimethyldiaminocarbene[3]ferrocenophane (5), was synthesized and incorporated into a series of Ir- and Ru-based complexes. Electrochemical and spectroscopic analyses of (5) Ir(CO)(2)Cl (15) revealed that 5 displayed a Tolman electronic parameter value of 2050 cm(-1) in the neutral state and 2061 cm(-1) upon oxidation. Moreover, inspection of X-ray crystallography data recorded for (5) Ir(cis,cis-1,5-cyclooctadiene)Cl (13) revealed that 5 was sterically less bulky (%V-Bur = 28.4) than other known diaminocarbene[3]ferrocenophanes, which facilitated the synthesis of (5)(PPh3)Cl2Ru-(3-phenylindenylid-1-ene) (18). Complex 18 exhibited quasi-reversible electrochemical processes at 0.79 and 0.98 V relative to SCE, which were assigned to the Fe and Ru centers in the complex, respectively, based on UV-vis and electron pair resonance spectroscopic measurements. Adding 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyanoquinone over the course of a ring-opening metathesis polymerization of cis, cis-1,5-cyclooctadiene catalyzed by 18 ([monomer](0)/[18](0) = 2500) reduced the corresponding rate constant of the reaction by over an order of magnitude (pre-oxidation: k(obs) = 0.045 s(-1); post-oxidation: k(obs) = 0.0012 s(-1)). Subsequent reduction of the oxidized species using decamethylferrocene restored catalytic activity (post-reduction: k(obs) = up to 0.016 s(-1), depending on when the reductant was added). The difference in the polymerization rates was attributed to the relative donating ability of the redox-active ligand (i.e., strongly donating 5 versus weakly donating 5(+)) which ultimately governed the activity displayed by the corresponding catalyst.U. On a class of representations of the Yangian and moduli space of monopoles
A new class of infinite dimensional representations of the Yangians
and corresponding to a complex semisimple algebra
and its Borel subalgebra is constructed.
It is based on the generalization of the Drinfeld realization of ,
in terms of quantum minors to the case of an arbitrary
semisimple Lie algebra . The Poisson geometry associated with the
constructed representations is described. In particular it is shown that the
underlying symplectic leaves are isomorphic to the moduli spaces of
-monopoles defined as the components of the space of based maps of
into the generalized flag manifold . Thus the constructed
representations of the Yangian may be considered as a quantization of the
moduli space of the monopoles.Comment: 16 pages, LaTex2e, some misprints are fixe
Inversion symmetric 3-monopoles and the Atiyah-Hitchin manifold
We consider 3-monopoles symmetric under inversion symmetry. We show that the
moduli space of these monopoles is an Atiyah-Hitchin submanifold of the
3-monopole moduli space. This allows what is known about 2-monopole dynamics to
be translated into results about the dynamics of 3-monopoles. Using a numerical
ADHMN construction we compute the monopole energy density at various points on
two interesting geodesics. The first is a geodesic over the two-dimensional
rounded cone submanifold corresponding to right angle scattering and the second
is a closed geodesic for three orbiting monopoles.Comment: latex, 22 pages, 2 figures. To appear in Nonlinearit

New Thermal Taste Actuation Technology for Future Multisensory Virtual Reality and Internet
Today’s virtual reality (VR) applications are mainly based on audio, visual, and haptic interactions between human and virtual world. Integrating the sense of taste into VR is difficult since we are dependent on chemical-based taste delivery systems. Therefore, developing a proper non-chemical digital taste actuation technology can unlock taste experiences in VR applications such as gaming, multisensory entertainment, remote dining, and online shopping. This paper presents the ‘Thermal Taste Machine’, a new digital taste actuation technology that can effectively produce and modify thermal taste sensations on the tongue. This device changes the temperature of the surface of the tongue within a short period of time (from 25 ◦ C to 40 ◦ C while heating and from 25 ◦ C to 10 ◦ C while cooling). We tested this device on human subjects and described the experience of thermal taste using 20 known (taste and non-taste) sensations. Our results suggested that rapidly heating the tongue produce sweetness, fatty/oiliness, electric taste, warmness, and reduced the sensibility for metallic taste. Similarly, participants reported that the cooling the tongue produced mint taste, pleasantness, and coldness. By conducting an another user study on the perceived sweetness of sucrose solutions after the thermal stimulation, we found that heating the tongue significantly enhanced the intensity of sweetness for both thermal tasters and non-thermal tasters. Also, we found that faster temperature rise on the tongue produce more intense sweet sensations for thermal tasters. We believe that this technology will be useful in two ways: First, it can produce taste sensations without using chemicals for the individuals who are sensitive to thermal taste. Second, the temperature rise of the device can be used as a way to enhance the intensity of sweetness. We believe that this technology can be used to digitally produce and enhance taste sensations in future virtual reality applications. The key novelties of this paper are as follows: 1. Development of a thermal taste actuation technology for stimulating the human taste receptors, 2. Characterization of the thermal taste produced by the device based on a set of taste related sensations and non-taste related sensations, 3. Research on enhancing the intensity for sucrose using thermal stimulation, 4. Research on how different speeds of heating affect the intensity of sweetness produced by thermal stimulation

Side channel attacks on smart home systems: A short overview
This paper provides an overview on side-channel attacks with emphasis on vulnerabilities in the smart home. Smart homes are enabled by the latest developments in sensors, communication technologies, internet protocols, and cloud services. The goal of a smart home is to have smart household devices collaborate without involvement of residents to deliver the variety of services needed for a higher quality of life. However, security and privacy challenges of smart homes have to be overcome in order to fully realize the smart home. Side channel attacks assume data is always leaking, and leakage of data from a smart home reveals sensitive information. This paper starts by reviewing side-channel attack categories, then it gives an overview on recent attack studies on different layers of a smart home and their malicious goals
Simulations of the Micro-Bunching Instability for SOLEIL and KARA Using Two Different VFP Solver Codes
The longitudinal dynamics of a bunched electron beam is an important aspect in the study of existing and the development of new electron storage rings. The dynamics depend on different beam parameters as well as on the interaction of the beam with its surroundings. A well established method for calculating the resulting dynamics is to numerically solve the Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equation. Depending on the chosen parameters and the considered wakefields and impedances, different effects can be studied. One common application is the investigation of the longitudinal micro-wave and micro-bunching instabilities. The latter occurs for short electron bunches due to self-interaction with their own emitted coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR). In this contribution, two different VFP solvers are used to simulate the longitudinal dynamics with a focus on the micro-bunching instability at the Soleil synchrotron and the KIT storage ring KARA (Karlsruhe Research Accelerator)
