Chapter The languages of wine: negotiating intercultural exchanges through translation

    Get PDF
This paper discusses the cultural and linguistic mediation strategies involved in the compilation of a terminological tool aimed at facilitating the intercultural exchanges between Italy and China in the field of oenology, by taking the Dictionary of Italian wines and grape varieties (Italian - Chinese) (Bosc et al. 2019) as a case study. The main objectives of the dictionary compilation were the popularization of specialized wine language, the standardization of the names of Italian wines and grape varieties, and the translation of the Italian lexicographical definitions in Chinese. For this process to be effective in terms of intercultural communication and mediation, the negotiation of standardization and translation strategies needed to take into account the differences between the two cultures and languages involved as well as the constraints of the lexicographical genre. After delineating the historical background and presenting the purpose of the dictionary from the lexicographical perspective, the paper delves into the choices made in the compilation of the Chinese text

China’s narrative of the fight against COVID-19: a case study of the representation of social actors in China Keywords

Since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, the Chinese political leadership has devoted substantial efforts to shape, through media and institutional discourses, a specific narrative of its response to the crisis, framing it as a fight in which the Chinese people, under the leadership of Xi Jinping and the Chinese Communist Party, promptly came together to defeat the virus. The present paper examines this dominant narrative focusing on the Chinese language section on the fight against COVID-19 of the multilingual online platform China Keywords, a project run by State and Party-affiliated institutions. Drawing on the theoretical background and analytical tools from Critical Discourse Studies, the paper provides an analysis of the discursive representation of social actors constructed by this tool. The analysis shows how different discursive strategies employed to represent specific social actors contribute to reinforce the constitutive elements of the Chinese leadership’s dominant narrative of the events of early 2020. Moreover, the paper argues that the section of China Keywords on the topic should be understood as one of the products of the multifaceted institutional efforts to “tell China’s Covid-19 story well,” both domestically and internationally.

JENS CHRISTIAN SVABO\u2019S GLOSSARY: THE ORAL TRADITION AT THE BEGINNING OF FAROESE LEXICOGRAPHY

The rediscovery, in the second half of the 18th century, of the Faroese language is strongly connected with the interest for the heroic ballads which had been transmitted orally over the centuries in the North Atlantic Islands. It was only thanks to the desire of collecting and making accessible for comparative purposes this ancient cultural heritage, in fact, that the Faroese language appeared in writing for the first time after it had been prohibited in schools, churches and official documents in 1536. The first collector of Faroese ballads was the Faroe-born scholar Jens Christian Svabo (1746-1824), who, not surprisingly, also compiled the first Faroese dictionary, the Dictionarium Faeroense, which was published some two hundred years later by Christian Matras in 1966-70, and developed the first systematic and consistent orthography of his mother tongue. In this essay, I will focus on the Collectio Vocum et Phrasium ex Carminibus F\ue6ro\uebnsibus antiquis (1780s), a work epitomizing per definition the close connection between Svabo\u2019s literary and lexicographic activities. In this, particular attention will be paid not only to the selection of lemmata, to the structure of their bilingual (Latin-Danish) interpretamenta, but also to the interaction between this glossary and the Dictionarium Faeroense and, through this, later Faroese lexicograph
