    High Curie temperature Mn 5 Ge 3 thin films produced by non-diffusive reaction

    Polycrystalline Mn 5 Ge 3 thin films were produced on SiO 2 using magnetron sputtering and reactive diffusion (RD) or non-diffusive reaction (NDR). In situ X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy were used to determine the layer structures, and magnetic force microscopy, superconducting quantum interference device and ferromagnetic resonance were used to determine their magnetic properties. RD-mediated layers exhibit similar magnetic properties as MBE-grown monocrystalline Mn 5 Ge 3 thin films, while NDR-mediated layers show magnetic properties similar to monocrystalline C-doped Mn 5 Ge 3 C x thin films with 0.1≤x≤0.2.0.1 \leq x \leq 0.2. NDR appears as a CMOS-compatible efficient method to produce good magnetic quality high-curie temperature Mn 5 Ge 3 thin films

    Large-scale bottleneck effect in two-dimensional turbulence

    The bottleneck phenomenon in three-dimensional turbulence is generally associated with the dissipation range of the energy spectrum. In the present work, it is shown by using a two-point closure theory, that in two-dimensional turbulence it is possible to observe a bottleneck at the large scales, due to the effect of friction on the inverse energy cascade. This large-scale bottleneck is directly related to the process of energy condensation, the pile-up of energy at wavenumbers corresponding to the domain size. The link between the use of friction and the creation of space-filling structures is discussed and it is concluded that the careless use of hypofriction might reduce the inertial range of the energy spectrum

    Decay of scalar variance in isotropic turbulence in a bounded domain

    The decay of scalar variance in isotropic turbulence in a bounded domain is investigated. Extending the study of Touil, Bertoglio and Shao (2002; Journal of Turbulence, 03, 49) to the case of a passive scalar, the effect of the finite size of the domain on the lengthscales of turbulent eddies and scalar structures is studied by truncating the infrared range of the wavenumber spectra. Analytical arguments based on a simple model for the spectral distributions show that the decay exponent for the variance of scalar fluctuations is proportional to the ratio of the Kolmogorov constant to the Corrsin-Obukhov constant. This result is verified by closure calculations in which the Corrsin-Obukhov constant is artificially varied. Large-eddy simulations provide support to the results and give an estimation of the value of the decay exponent and of the scalar to velocity time scale ratio

    Spectral imbalance and the normalized dissipation rate of turbulence

    The normalized turbulent dissipation rate CϵC_\epsilon is studied in decaying and forced turbulence by direct numerical simulations, large-eddy simulations, and closure calculations. A large difference in the values of CϵC_\epsilon is observed for the two types of turbulence. This difference is found at moderate Reynolds number, and it is shown that it persists at high Reynolds number, where the value of CϵC_\epsilon becomes independent of the Reynolds number, but is still not unique. This difference can be explained by the influence of the nonlinear cascade time that introduces a spectral disequilibrium for statistically nonstationary turbulence. Phenomenological analysis yields simple analytical models that satisfactorily reproduce the numerical results. These simple spectral models also reproduce and explain the increase of CϵC_\epsilon at low Reynolds number that is observed in the simulations

    Optimal estimation for Large-Eddy Simulation of turbulence and application to the analysis of subgrid models

    The tools of optimal estimation are applied to the study of subgrid models for Large-Eddy Simulation of turbulence. The concept of optimal estimator is introduced and its properties are analyzed in the context of applications to a priori tests of subgrid models. Attention is focused on the Cook and Riley model in the case of a scalar field in isotropic turbulence. Using DNS data, the relevance of the beta assumption is estimated by computing (i) generalized optimal estimators and (ii) the error brought by this assumption alone. Optimal estimators are computed for the subgrid variance using various sets of variables and various techniques (histograms and neural networks). It is shown that optimal estimators allow a thorough exploration of models. Neural networks are proved to be relevant and very efficient in this framework, and further usages are suggested

    Te homogeneous precipitation in Ge dislocation loop vicinity

    International audienceHigh resolution microscopies were used to study the interactions of Te atoms with Ge dislocation loops, after a standard n-type doping process in Ge. Te atoms neither segregate nor precipitate on dislocation loops, but form Te-Ge clusters at the same depth as dislocation loops, in contradiction with usual dopant behavior and thermodynamic expectations. Atomistic kinetic Monte Carlo simulations show that Te atoms are repulsed from dislocation loops due to elastic interactions, promoting homogeneous Te-Ge nucleation between dislocation loops. This phenomenon is enhanced by coulombic interactions between activated Te2Ăľ or Te1Ăľ ions

    The Digital Agricultural Revolution: a Bibliometric Analysis Literature Review

    The application of digital technologies in agriculture can improve traditional practices to adapt to climate change, reduce Greenhouse Gases (GHG) emissions, and promote a sustainable intensification for food security. Some authors argued that we are experiencing a Digital Agricultural Revolution (DAR) that will boost sustainable farming. This study aims to find evidence of the ongoing DAR process and clarify its roots, what it means, and where it is heading. We investigated the scientific literature with bibliometric analysis tools to produce an objective and reproducible literature review. We retrieved 4995 articles by querying the Web of Science database in the timespan 2012-2019, and we analyzed the obtained dataset to answer three specific research questions: i) what is the spectrum of the DAR-related terminology?; ii) what are the key articles and the most influential journals, institutions, and countries?; iii) what are the main research streams and the emerging topics? By grouping the authors' keywords reported on publications, we identified five main research streams: Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA), Site-Specific Management (SSM), Remote Sensing (RS), Internet of Things (IoT), and Artificial Intelligence (AI). To provide a broad overview of each of these topics, we analyzed relevant review articles, and we present here the main achievements and the ongoing challenges. Finally, we showed the trending topics of the last three years (2017, 2018, 2019)

    Bacterioplankton composition as an indicator of environmental status: proof of principle using indicator value analysis of estuarine communities

    Increasing awareness of environmental impacts caused by anthropogenic activities highlights the need to determine indicators of environmental status that can be routinely assessed at large spatial and temporal scales. Microbial communities comprise the greatest share of biological diversity on Earth and can rapidly reflect recent environmental changes while providing a record of past events. However, they have rarely been targeted in the search for ecological indicators of habitat types, environmental conditions, or environmental changes. Here, as a proof of principle, we analysed the bacterioplankton community composition of 4 estuaries in North and South America, Europe, and Asia, and looked for indicators of groups of samples defined using partition techniques, according to primary physicochemical variables typically monitored to infer water quality. Indicator value analysis (IndVal) was conducted to identify indicator operational taxonomic units (OTUs; analogous to species in other fields of ecology) in each group. These bacterioplankton-based indicators exhibited a high capacity to predict the group membership of the samples within each estuary and to correctly assign the samples to the appropriate estuary in a combined data set, employing different machine learning techniques. The indicators were composed of OTUs belonging to several bacterial phyla, which responded significantly and differentially to the environmental variables used to define the groups of samples. Moreover, the predictive values of these bacterial indicators were generally higher than those of other biological assemblages commonly used for environmental monitoring. Therefore, this approach appears to be a promising tool to complement existing strategies for monitoring and conservation of aquatic systems worldwide

    Extrinsic outflow graft flow obstruction in patients with HeartMate3 LVAD

    Blood flow obstruction at the level of the outflow graft is a rare but severe complication of LVAD support. We present a series of five patients supported with HeartMate3 LVAD (Abbott Labs, Chicago, IL) that developed an outflow graft obstruction after 607–1250 days of support, during prolonged antithrombotic therapy. Three patients presented with severe symptoms of heart failure, were treated with endovascular stenting and experienced full recovery. Preoperative computed tomography angiography and intraoperative angiography together with intravascular ultrasound provided diagnosis and guided treatment. In two patients, outflow obstruction was an occasional finding at imaging without heart failure symptoms and a “watchful waiting” approach was adopted: delayed treatment in one of them was futile. This late adverse event is peculiar for its pathophysiology and not yet discussed among the mechanical circulatory support community
