Electrical Bearing Damage, A Problem in the Nano- and Macro-Range

    Get PDF
Rolling bearings face different damaging effects: Besides mechanical effects, current-induced bearing damage occurs in electrical drive systems. Therefore, it is of increasing interest to understand the differences leading to known electrical damage patterns. It is of utmost importance not to consider the harmful current passage in the machine element as an isolated phenomenon but to take into account the whole drive system consisting of the machine elements, the electric motor and the connected power electronics. This publication works toward providing an overview of the state-of-the-art of research regarding electrical bearing currents

OBJECTIVES 4D flow MRI enables quantitative assessment of helical flow. We sought to generate normal values and elucidate changes of helical flow (duration, volume, length, velocities and rotational direction) and flow jet (displacement, flow angle) as well as wall shear stress (WSS). METHODS We assessed the temporal helical existence (THEX), maximum helical volume (HVmax), accumulated helical volume (HVacc), accumulated helical volume length (HVLacc), maximum forward velocity (maxVfor), maximum circumferential velocity (maxVcirc), rotational direction (RD) and maximum wall shear stress (WSS) as reported elsewhere using the software tool Bloodline in 86 healthy volunteers (46 females, mean age 41 ± 13 years). RESULTS WSS decreased by 42.1% and maxVfor by 55.7% across age. There was no link between age and gender regarding the other parameters. CONCLUSION This study provides age-dependent normal values regarding WSS and maxVfor and age- and gender-independent normal values regarding THEX, HVmax, HVacc, HVLacc, RD and maxVcirc. KEY POINTS • 4D flow provides numerous new parameters; therefore, normal values are mandatory. • Wall shear stress decreases over age. • Maximum helical forward velocity decreases over age

Their characteristics and possible risk factors in this population are not yet well defined. METHODS: We analyzed data from 14 countries that participated in the international, population-based Burden of Obstructive Lung Disease (BOLD) study. Participants were aged ≥ 40 years and completed postbronchodilator spirometry testing plus questionnaires about respiratory symptoms, health status, and exposure to COPD risk factors. A diagnosis of COPD was based on the postbronchodilator FEV₁/FVC ratio, according to current GOLD (Global Initiative for Obstructive Lung Disease) guidelines. In addition to this, the lower limit of normal (LLN) was evaluated as an alternative threshold for the FEV₁/FVC ratio. RESULTS: Among 4,291 never smokers, 6.6% met criteria for mild (GOLD stage I) COPD, and 5.6% met criteria for moderate to very severe (GOLD stage II+) COPD. Although never smokers were less likely to have COPD and had less severe COPD than ever smokers, never smokers nonetheless comprised 23.3% (240/1,031) of those classified with GOLD stage II+ COPD. This proportion was similar, 20.5% (171/832), even when the LLN was used as a threshold for the FEV₁/FVC ratio. Predictors of COPD in never smokers include age, education, occupational exposure, childhood respiratory diseases, and BMI alterations. CONCLUSION: This multicenter international study confirms previous evidence that never smokers comprise a substantial proportion of individuals with COPD. Our data suggest that, in addition to increased age, a prior diagnosis of asthma and, among women, lower education levels are associated with an increased risk for COPD among never smokers.ALTANA Aventis AstraZeneca Boehringer-Ingleheim Chiesi GlaxoSmithKline Merck Novartis Pfizer Inc Schering-Plough Sunovion Pharmaceuticals Inc University of Kentucky Schering Plough Sepracor AstraZeneca, Spai

Comorbid substance abuse and brain morphology in recent-onset psychosis

The aim of the presented study was to compare schizophrenia and schizoaffective patients early in the course of the disease with and without comorbid substance abuse disorder (SUD vs. NSUD) with regard to brain morphology. In a prospective design 41 patients (20 SUD vs. 21 NSUD) diagnosed as recent-onset schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder consecutively admitted to hospital received standardized psychopathological evaluation (BPRS, SANS, MADRS, CGI, GAF) and MRI scanning with volumetric measurement of superior temporal gyrus (STG), amygdala-hippocampal complex, and cingulum. Patients with SUD (primarily cannabis) were significantly younger, predominantly male and had a lower socioeconomic status. Despite less attentional impairment (SANS subscore) and elevated anxiety/depression (BPRS subscore) in patients with SUD compared to NSUD, no other psychopathological differences could be detected. There were no differences in the assessed temporolimbic brain morphology between the two subgroups. In conclusion, in this study substance abuse in recent-onset psychosis had no effect on brain morphology and the earlier onset of psychosis in patients with comorbid SUD could not be explained by supposed accentuated brain abnormalities in temporolimbic regions

Evaluation of preparation and combustion rig tests of an effusive cooled SiC/SiCN panel

SiC/SiCN ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) are promising candidates for components of aero-engines. To evaluate the properties of these CMCs under realistic conditions, a quasi-flat panel with effusion cooling holes was investigated in a high pressure combustor rig. A Tyranno SA3 fabric-based SiC/SiCN composite with high strength and strain to failure was manufactured via polymer infiltration and pyrolysis process. Due to its weak matrix no fiber coating was necessary for damage tolerant behavior. The cooling holes in the panel were introduced via laser drilling. An outer coating of CVD-based SiC was finally applied for enhanced oxidation resistance. The specimen was tested in the combustor rig and the cooling effectiveness was evaluated. The microstructure of laser machined holes was studied via microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The macrostructure was investigated via computing tomography scans before and after the combustor test. Material performances at higher temperatures were estimated via a material performance index. Local microstructure modifications were observed after laser drilling. No crack formation was observed in the CMC panels after rig tests. The measured global cooling effectiveness of 0.76 and the analytical performance evaluation demonstrate the potential benefit of SiC/SiCN materials in combustor applications

4D flow MRI enables quantitative assessment of helical flow. Current methods are susceptible to noise. To evaluate helical flow patterns in healthy volunteers and patients with bicuspid aortic valves (BAV) at 1.5 T and 3 T using pressure-based helix-extraction in 4D flow MRI. Two intraindividual 4D flow MRI examinations were performed at 1.5 T and 3 T in ten healthy volunteers (5 females, 32 ± 3 years) and 2 patients with BAV using different acceleration techniques (kt-GRAPPA and centra). Several new quantitative parameters for the evaluation of volumes [ml], lengths [mm] as well as temporal parameters [ms] of helical flow were introduced and analyzed using the software tool Bloodline. We found good correlations between measurements in volunteers at 1.5 T and 3 T regarding helical flow volumes (R = 0.98) and temporal existence (R = 0.99) of helices in the ascending aorta. Furthermore, we found significantly larger (11.7 vs. 77.6 ml) and longer lasting (317 vs. 769 ms) helices in patients with BAV than in volunteers. The assessed parameters do not depend on the magnetic field strength used for the acquisition. The technique of pressure-based extraction of 4D flow MRI pattern is suitable for differentiation of normal and pathological flow
