The Challenges Facing Science Data Archiving on Current Mass Storage Systems
This paper discusses the desired characteristics of a tape-based petabyte science data archive and retrieval system required to store and distribute several terabytes (TB) of data per day over an extended period of time, probably more than 115 years, in support of programs such as the Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS). These characteristics take into consideration not only cost effective and affordable storage capacity, but also rapid access to selected files, and reading rates that are needed to satisfy thousands of retrieval transactions per day. It seems that where rapid random access to files is not crucial, the tape medium, magnetic or optical, continues to offer cost effective data storage and retrieval solutions, and is likely to do so for many years to come. However, in environments like EOS these tape based archive solutions provide less than full user satisfaction. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to describe the performance and operational enhancements that need to be made to the current tape based archival systems in order to achieve greater acceptance by the EOS and similar user communities
Stability of the WTP measurements with successive use of choice experiments method and multiple programmes method
This paper is part of an investigation to evaluate the benefits of landscape policies. Such policies are, within a specific area (here the Monts dâArrĂ©e in Brittany), favouring some landscape attributes. We test out a procedure based on a double device. The first one relies on the choice experiments method and focuses on each attribute. Without prior information about the presence of substitution and complementarity effects between attributes, we work on the basis of scenarios built to ensure the independence of attributes. The important question of the impact of an attribute variation on the aesthetic value of another one, when these attributes are jointly perceived, is tackled by use of the multi-programme method. The two surveys were launched after an interval of one year, sampling among the same population. The WTP results obtained from each method are not statistically different.Valuation; choice modelling; multi-attributes choice set; multi-programme method; choice experiments; landscape; Monts dâArrĂ©e
Forms of Gender Inequalities in Fish Farming in Kwnza Division, Trans Nzoia County, Kenya.
Fish farming being a sub-sector in agriculture has a major contribution to the Kenyan economy and therefore should be fully promoted to enhance its productivity. To achieve this, women who form a large proportion of the rural population should be fully empowered in order for them to participate in fish farming. The information obtained from Trans Nzoia County Fisheries Office, indicated that women were not equally involved in fish farming as their male counterparts did. The objective of the study was to determine the forms of gender inequalities in fish farming? The target population of the study consisted of 400 fish farmers in the district with a sample of 100 being selected. The target population was divided into two strata according to household headship. The samples comprised of 50 male farmers and 50 female farmers (male-headed households and female headed households) were selected from the two strata. The data was collected using interview schedules and observation checklists. Qualitative data, in textual form was indexed and rearranged according to the appropriate part of thematic framework which they related. Statistical Package for Social sciences (SPSS) Computer software was used to analyse the quantitative data. The results showed that lack of formal education, land ownership, source of funding and farm inputs were the main constraints facing women farmers. However, the study also established that there wasnât gender disparity in the following area: reasons for engaging in fish farming, access to extension services, and availability of labor. Access to extension services was a constraint for both men and women with 26.2% male farmers and 14.9% female farmers reporting that they never received any services. Women were further constrained by limited time to perform their roles as caregivers to their families as well as limited access to technologies. It was therefore concluded that women did not participate fully in fish farming activities in Kwanza Division as their male counterparts. The findings provide useful information to policy makers on how to address the complex issues related to gender, food security and rural poverty.

This article discusses the relevance to analyze structural violence with an intersectional feminist framework. First, we will define the evolution of the concept of structural violence. Then we will present three perspectives of domination and several issues in intersectional feminism. Finally, this article shows that analyzing structural violence with an intersectional framework represents a more inclusive perspective to understand womenâs experience of violence
Zero-velocity atom interferometry using a retroreflected frequency chirped laser
International audienceAtom interferometry using stimulated Raman transitions in a retroreflected configuration is the first choice in high-precision measurements because it provides low phase noise, a high-quality Raman wave front, and a simple experimental setup. However, it cannot be used for atoms at zero velocity because two pairs of Raman lasers are simultaneously resonant. Here we report a method which allows this degeneracy to be lifted by using a frequency chirp on the Raman lasers. Using this technique, we realize a Mach-Zehnder atom interferometer hybridized with a force balanced accelerometer which provides horizontal acceleration measurements with a short-term sensitivity of 3.2Ă10â5msâ2/Hz. This technique could be used for multiaxis inertial sensors, tiltmeters, or atom interferometry in a microgravity environment
